1. Valdivia Earthquake, Chile -magnitude: 9.5
Date: 22nd May, 1960
The Largest Earthquake in the World, it killed 1655 human lives and responsible for injury of more than 2000 people.
2. Alaskan Earthquake, Alaska -magnitude: 9.2
Date: 27th March, 1964
1964 Alaskan earthquake is the 2nd most powerful earthquake ever measured by seismograph in the world, and largest earthquake in continental America.
3. Sumatra Earthquake 2004, Indonesia -(magnitude: 9.1)
Date: 26th December, 2004
*This is the third largest earthquake in the world since 1900 and is the largest since the 1964 Prince William Sound, Alaska earthquake. In total, 227,898 people were killed or were missing and presumed dead and about 1.7 million people were displaced by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami in 14 countries in South Asia and East Africa.
4. Tohoku Earthquake, Japan -(magnitude: 9.0)
Date: 11th March, 2011
At least 15,703 people killed, 4,647 missing, 5,314 injured, 130,927 displaced and at least 332,395 buildings, 2,126 roads, 56 bridges and 26 railways destroyed or damaged by the earthquake and tsunami along the entire east coast of Honshu from Chiba to Aomori. With a magnitude of 9.0 it is among the Top 5 Largest Earthquakes in Recorded History.
5. Kamchatka earthquake, Russia -magnitude: 9.0
Date: 4th November,1952
Kamchatka earthquake was the very first recorded earthquake with magnitude in the scale of 9.
6. FFSHORE BIO-BIO, CHILE -(magnitude: 8.8)
Date: 27th February 2010
At least 1.8 million people affected in Araucania, Bio-Bio, Maule, O'Higgins, Region Metropolitana and Valparaiso. The total economic loss in Chile was estimated at 30 billion US dollars.
7. Off the Coast of Ecuador-Colombia Earthquake (magnitude: 8.8)
Date: 31st January, 1906
1906 Ecuador-Colombia earthquake at the off-coast of Ecuador caused a tsunami which killed 1500 in Ecuador and Columbia.
8. Rat Islands, Alaska -(magnitude: 8.7)
Date: 4th February, 1965
Deaths: Not recorded
Rat island earthquake of magnitude 8.7 is the only earthquake to produce tsunami 10m (32 feet) high.
9. NORTHERN SUMATRA, Indonesia (magnitude: 8.6)
Date: 28th March, 2005
Sumatra faced two big earthquakes in a span of just 4 months due to geographically active plate tectonics. The second Sumatra earthquake was less violent compared to boxing day earthquake. At least 1300 people were killed in Nias island and Sri Lanka.
Even though the subsequent tsunami killed 1310 in Nias island and Sri Lanka.
10. Assam–Tibet earthquake -magnitude: 8.6
Date: 15th August, 1950
on August 15, the third Independence Day of India and The epicentre was located near Rima, Tibet. The earthquake was destructive in both Assam and Tibet, and at least 1,500 people killed.
