Aquarium Pula

03:37
Welcome to Aquarium Pula, where the richness of the Adriatic Sea is combined in a unique way with centuries long military history of Pula. The aquarium is settled in the 130 year old fortress Verudela, part of the once mighty Austro-Hungarian defence compound Fortress Pula. Today, the fortress is inhabited by 100 species of north and south Adriatic fish, 50 species from tropical seas and fresh waters, as well as fish from Croatian rivers and lakes. Meet our sea turtles recovering in our Centre, along with our albino Gourami, Horseshoe crab (a living fossil), coral reef sharks, big rays and groupers, scary muraenas, timid mullets and all the other animals that have found their home in rooms, hallways and tunnels once used by soldiers.

Now one enterprising entrepreneur hopes to give visitors a unique experience - a trip in a locally made 'semi -submarine'. STORYLINE: Croatia boasts 1778 kilometres (1103 miles) of coastline, 5790 kilometres (3590 miles) if you count the islands. Plenty of natural scenery to explore, both above and below sea level. The small Dalmation town of Biograd, is carving out a niche in the crowded tourist market, offering visitors a ride in an unusual floating vessel - a semi-submarine. The vessel is the brainchild of local entrepreneur Mladen Peharda. The craft is called a 'semi-submarine' because although it looks like a real submarine it doesn't submerge beneath the surface of the sea. Peharda says he has loved the sea ever since he was a small boy. Now he has created a way to share his passion with others. Passengers can enjoy the undersea experience sitting in a cabin located 1.5 metres (5 feet) beneath the surface. Peharda is a former national junior champion in sailing, and he worked for years as a skipper. ==== You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/3cc27bb11c8ec78ecda23ba1e6028e43 Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork

Endangered Dusky groupers in the only mediterranean Coral Reef (Mljet, Croatia)

02:57
Close to the island of Mljet in southern Croatia the only true coral reef of the Mediterranean Sea can be found. Colonies of the stony coral "Cladocora caespitosa", usually not larger than a human's fist, are building impressive blocks up to two meters in diameter. Additionally this is one of the very few tiny areas in Croatia, where fishing of any kind is entirely prohibited. No spear fishing, no gillnets, no hook and lines - the difference is stunning. already in shallow water of about 10 meters Annular, Two-banded and Sharpsnout seabreams are a lot larger than usual, numerous Dentex cruise by, a pack of docile European seabass is welcoming us in their element. Most amazing is the abundance of endangered Dusky grouper ("Epinephelus marginatus"). During 15 years of diving and snorkeling in the Mediterranean sea we've so far encountered two individuals outside of Mljet. One of them a tiny juvenile in "our" bay at Mali Lošinj. At Mljet we stopped counting at 15 ... Strinking are the countless Spiny lobsters and splendid specimens of Gilthead Seabream and Dentex awaiting their fate in the holding tanks of nearby restaurants. The catches for fishermen close to the protected area seem to be a lot better then elsewhere in Croatia. For years we've been telling our students how amazingly varied and abundant life in the sea could be if only fisheries were managed better and at places prohibited entirely. That the beautiful adriatic sea they experienced at our marine biology courses is actually only a shadow of herself. At the end we could hardly beleive it ourselves. It's awesome to see that the solution is actually quite simple. That the seas could be full of life once more and the fishermen would be the ones to profit the most. We know how to do it so - what are we waiting for ...? :-)

Adriatic Sea Treasure - diving around the island of Vis

09:13
Vis is a small island situated in the middle of Adriatic Sea. The island resembles a lonely mountain growing from abyss. Its steepy slopes creates outstanding underwater landscapes. Many currents which apears in that region, deliver nutrients necessarly for developing mediterranean deep water reefs. Those reefs are habitat for many fish and invertebrates. In my opinion Vis offers the best spots to dive in Adriatic Sea. In this video I would like to show You how unique is that region. For now it is highly important to protect that area from overfishing and using destructive fishing tools and I hope it will be protected by law. This short movie was created due to hospitality of Veljano Zanki, the owner of B-24 diving center, one of the best freedivers in the world and personaly my dear friend. ------------------------------------------------- www.underwater-passion.com

Aquarium Pula, a place where richness of the Adriatic enchants you

03:56
Aquarium Pula is a destination that will attract children as well as adults. Alongside the aquarium display, that in a uniquely interesting and educational way presents natural and cultural history of Croatia, the aquarium setting itself is remarkable. Namely, its home is an Austro-Hungarian fort Verudela, built in 1886. and registered as a protected cultural heritage. The fort is in a constant process of revitalization starting in 2002. More than 1500 m2 of aquarium space and 5000m2 of outside area is adapted to suit the needs of the aquarium and the visitors. Most of the rooms have been used to display various exhibits, only the central part – the cannon block – and the moat surrounding the fort, 100 meters long and 10 meters wide, remain unused. The central cannon block in fort Verudela, currently unoccupied, will be converted to display living world of the Adriatic and tropical habitats. For 2017 Aquarium Pula is planning to open three completely new tanks 50 m3 of water each. The ground level tank will be home for some larger Adriatic animals, such as a sunfish, eagle ray and a few shark species, while the tank on the first floor is reserved for tropical sharks. With the main goal of promoting natural heritage and spreading knowledge about the need for its protection and valorization, the aquarium presents a diversified turistical offer and a creative product that suplements regular tourism oriented toward entertainment and sport. Although public aquariums are present in countries from which our tourists arrive (Germany, Scandinavian countries, England, Italy), an integrated presentation of the region's history through a 19 th century Austro – Hungarian fortress and natural richness of the Adriatic is why Aquarium Pula is unique. Educational activities conducted in Aquarium Pula represent a unique offer to domestic and foreign school groups, but also a popularization of the need to protect marine habitats through educational tourism. Sea turtle rescue centre, a well known NGO, also found its home in Aquarium Pula. Persistently working on marine life preservation, the Centre has already initiated a number of original programs to protect sea turtles, those long-lived creatures that are currently among the most threatened in the world.

5 Mermaids Caught On Camera & Spotted In Real Life! #2

05:18
5 Mermaids Caught On Tape & Spotted In Real Life! (Part 2) Description: Sailors have always told tales of beautiful femme fatales that wait in the ocean, leading men to their deaths. According to legend, many lonely, desperate men have been lured by the beauty of a woman with the bottom half of a fish, dragged down to the depths below where they faced unknown horrors. The ancient Greeks called them sirens, the Japanese call them ningyo, but we call them mermaids. These are 5 mermaids caught on camera and spotted in real life. Let’s begin! 5.) Mermaid Migration Caught on Film by Drone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1NkMQ8FGec All mammals travel in packs, and if mermaids are merely an offshoot of humans, as aquatic ape proponents suggest, then it would make sense that they would travel in pods like whales or dolphins. This footage allegedly captures one such pod traveling through the ocean. Very little information exists about the video, which was uploaded anonymously and then shared by several different channels for different purposes. There have been reports in the past of groups of mermaids, though never caught on film. Some purport this is simply a pod of dolphins, though without more information to definitively put the argument to rest. immediately be recognizable as such? 4.) Mermaid Found in Shark’s Stomach https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOPqtFsWGao In 2016 a video allegedly surfaced on the internet of a mermaid trapped within the stomach of a captured shark. This image is the only remaining evidence of such a video. The incident occurred in Asia. Fisherman caught a shark, which is considered a delicacy in the region, and when they opened the shark up to begin processing it, they find this strange, almost humanoid protrusion within. While the video is no longer available, some have argued that the image is a hoax. It’s impossible to know for sure until the fisherman who captured this shark steps forward. 3.) Archaeological Mermaid Skeleton http://beforeitsnews.com/conspiracy-theories/2015/12/mermaid-skeleton-in-national-museum-in-copenhagen-2473170.html This mermaid skeleton lies in the National Museum of Denmark. This skeleton was allegedly found by a farmer, who discovered the skeletal remains of a mermaid while plowing his field. Many of the world’s greatest historical cryptoarchaeological finds have been discovered under similar circumstances, buried just under someone’s property. Mermaid skeletons have been discovered before and presented for display, though this may be the first and only mermaid skeleton displayed in such a prestigious, national museum. One of the most famous examples of mermaid remains is the Fiji Mermaid, a purported hoax allegedly created by taxidermying the remains of a fish and a monkey. 2.) Mermaid in Wave http://video.beforeitsnews.com/mermaids-are-real-the-new-evidencecamera-captures-mermaid_bd4c3c1c5.html (cut the music) Most sightings of mermaids include one solitary mermaid resting in the water or near it on the beach or on a rock. Very rarely do you have the chance to catch a glimpse of a mermaid swimming. This video allegedly captures one mermaid, surfing along the waves at an incredible speed as it breaches the water. While it’s a short video, the quality of the video is high enough that we can clearly see the creature’s humanoid torso and it’s long, fishlike tail. Some have argued that this video is a hoax created with computers, though there are certainly more obvious doctored videos that most people believe. 1.) Real Mermaids on Coast of California https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQKoHuWo0Z4 This video recorded in California allegedly captures a mermaid doing what mermaids are known to do, just hanging out. While the video resolution is a bit fuzzy, you can clearly make out the creature in the video. When the video begins, it’s sitting on a beach, casually waving its tail, perhaps resting after a long journey or just enjoying the rays of the sun. The creature then dives into the water. After diving, it then breaches the water, and you can clearly see its humanoid torso and head. This mermaid does not share the typical human appearance that most mermaids are reported as having. It’s body seems to be a greyish color, and its head lacks hair, reflecting a possible more fish-like quality than the romantic image that people often think of when they think of mermaids. REAL Mermaid Sightings Around The World!

British Columbia, 1967 In 1967, British Columbia became a hub of mermaid excitement when, one day, Ferry riders spotted a mermaid lounging on the shore of Mayne Island. They claimed they saw a topless, blonde woman with the tail of a porpoise sitting on the beach shore. Some witnesses even became very upset, as they believed they saw the mermaid eating a raw salmon. One tourist from Iowa even managed to take a picture. After the sighting, the mermaid was seen one more time the following week. As the locals got swept up by the spotting of this mysterious mermaid, the town locals began to seek any information relating to her. The town newspaper, The Colonist, put up a $25,000 reward for the mermaid. Arrangements were even made for the mermaid to have room and board once she was found and successfully acclimated into the town setting. Although many believe that the whole thing was a charade, many still believe that what they saw was real. 9. Scotland, 1830 Mermaids are a part of Scotland’s countless mysteries and legends. It’s not surprising, then, that there would be many accounts of mermaid sightings. In 1830, the people of the island of Benbecula saw a mermaid. While cutting seaweed near the shore one day, a woman reportedly saw a miniature woman swimming in the water. Surprised by her discovery, she called many people over to view the water dweller. Some men rushed at her in the water, either to catch her or get a closer look, and the woman swam out of reach. Some boys threw stones at the frightened mermaid and one struck her in the back. A few days later, the corpse of the mermaid supposedly washed up on the shore. Like many of the other claims of mermaids, this one was small, with pale white skin and had the tail of a fish without scales. After the discovery, the sheriff of the town thought it only fitting that the mermaid have a proper burial. Someone constructed a coffin and the mermaid, wrapped in a shroud, was laid to rest above the shoreline where she was found. To this day, no one knows exactly where the mermaid was buried as no marker was left to denote the spot. 8. West Indies, 1614 John Smith, the same John Smith from Pocahontas, reported that he saw a mermaid off the coast of West Indies in 1614. According to the story, Smith saw a woman swimming parallel to the shore. He was captivated by the grace in which she moved and noted that she had ears that were too long, a nose that was too short, eyes that were too round, and green hair. He also noted that the woman was a little attractive from the waist up. From the waist down, however, she was all fish. Some doubt has been thrown on the veracity of the tale of course, otherwise where would the mystery be. One source claims he wasn’t in the West Indies but in Newfoundland. Another historian says Smith wasn’t in the West Indies in 1614, though he was there in 1607. Potato patato in this case. The same historian suggested that Alexandre Dumas fabricated the tale to give credence to his own mermaid story about a Frenchman searching for a Dutchman who had four children with a mermaid. 7. Norway, 1608 In 1608, Henry Hudson explored the cold northern waters off Norway. Written in his journal, he describes a day when he encountered a group of mermaids. Hudson claimed a mermaid appeared in the water, saw his crew and called up more of her mermaid sisters. He described the women as being as big as the men in his crew, with very white skin and long dark hair. He claimed their tails looked like a dolphin’s but were spotted like a mackerel. Hudson was thrilled that he had discovered mermaids. What makes this case so strange is that it occurred in the Bering Sea. Most mermaid sightings are discounted as sailors mistaking animals, often manatees, as mermaids. However, no manatees swim the waters of the Bering Sea. Naturalist Philip Henry Gosse, in his mid-1800s work The Romance of Natural History, believes it to be impossible that Hudson mistook an animal for this mermaid. He believes seasoned sailors such as Hudson would be able to identify animals in that location easily. Gosse believes either Hudson made this entire story up or Hudson saw something truly unique to the realm of science. We may never know. Origins Explained is the place to be to find all the answers to your questions, from mysterious events and unsolved mysteries to everything there is to know about the world and its amazing animals!
