Girl Builds DIY Decking & Planters | The Carpenter's Daughter

Hi everyone, Here's how I designed and built my own garden decking in girl power fashion! It was much easier than I thought it would be and dread to think how much someone would've charged us for one this size. In total, it cost about £200 and a year later, is still going strong with absolutely not weeds. However, we haven't put a hot tub on it yet! How to Build a Raised Deck with Wickes

17:05
A partly or fully raised deck can be a great addition to any garden, especially if the ground is sloping or uneven. Learn how to build a raised deck with this step by step guide from our Wickes experts. Subscribe to the Wickes YouTube channel here: http://po.st/YijIE1 For more Wickes garden and landscaping videos click here: http://po.st/jAXyHE Planning The key to a successful deck is in the planning. Avoid very wet areas completely and if the deck is in a shady area be prepared to treat and clean the wood annually. Draw your deck to scale on paper as accurately as you can, remember it's the deck boarding that governs the size of the deck. You should also bear in mind that any deck over 300mm off the ground will require planning permission. Corner Posts When digging the holes for your corner posts be sure to look out for any cables or pipes as you go. Once the soil is removed you should be left with a 300mm x 300mm square to a depth of 700mm for each post. Make sure you add a section of concrete block to each hole before adding in the post and Postcrete. Outer Frame If your deck is on a slope, start with corner where the deck is highest off the ground and mark on the post where the highest part of the frame will be. To ensure rain water runs off your deck, and away from the house, allow for a slight fall in the level of the deck frame by factoring in a fall of 2mm for every metre. Centre post and Support Joists Your support joists should run in the same direction as your deck boards. Sandwich the centre post between two support joists before securing with Postcrete. Trim your post by using a setsquare and a handsaw making sure you treat the cut ends as you go. When laying your landscape fabric it's best to overlap the fabric to ensure it covers all of the area under your deck. Steps Your steps should be supported on solid and level ground. When building your stairs you will also need to make sure they are flush with both the top and side of your frame. When securing your deck boards to the steps, always secure the front faces of the steps first. Deck Boards When securing deck boards we'd recommend drilling all fixing points with a 2mm bit to prevent them from splitting, also, if you countersink all drilled fixing points you will get a smoother finish. Keep spaces even between adjacent boards by using a spacer from an off cut of timber (we'd recommend a gap of 5-8mm to allow the timber to expand and contract). Fascia Boards Start by attaching all the boards that do not need to be cut down, with 64mm screws. If you are adding an angled board because the decking is being built on a slope you will need to add packers to the deck frame. Remember to also leave a gap of at least 5mm between the board and the ground as you do not want it touching the ground at any point. That’s because we’re adept at recognizing patterns, not just in how things look, but how they interact with one another. In Magic, we often see recurring themes and patterns in how certain decks play out, and how they interact not just with your opponent, but the board state as well. We call these archetypes, because we see them come up in almost every format again and again like an old friend, or in some cases, an old nemesis. By labeling these different deck archetypes, we can understand what a deck is trying to do just by hearing the name of it. If I say “Red Deck Wins”, you know this deck is focused on a Aggro strategy, has no Control elements, and uses cards like lightning bolt and goblin guide. It immediately tells you what the deck is trying to do, and how going about it. In this episode, we’ll be exploring the three primary types of deck archetypes we see in Magic: The Gathering: Aggro, Control and Combo. We’ll talk about their strengths, their weaknesses, and how to evaluate cards to build these archetypes in both Limited and Constructed. Which of these archetypes should I play? This depends on the format, and also on the timing. If you’re looking for a good win rate, the best time to play an Aggro strategy is usually right after a set comes out in Standard. Because the format is still being in some ways “figured out”, being proactive and focusing on just killing your opponent is an effective way of getting those early wins. Once a format becomes more defined, it’s easier to build a Control deck to beat what other people are doing, which is usually at the end before the next set is released, or before rotation. Combo is sprinkled throughout the lifespan of a format sometimes, when and if there is a good busted combo in a Control deck. If people are playing a lot of Aggro decks, then it’s a good time to do one of those Engine decks, as long as it’s fast and can kill by turn 5 if there isn’t interaction. But honestly, the real answer to this question is: any of them you want! What is amazing about Magic: the Gathering as a game is its flexibility. You can express yourself through gameplay in almost any way you might wish. I love my Modern Merfolk deck, and no matter how it’s doing in the meta, I’ll continue to play it, regardless of what other people think. For you that might be your Cat tribal Standard deck, your Burn deck, or even 8 Rack. Whatever you choose, follow your bliss and fine tune it to the best of your ability. Different people play Magic differently, and in that lies the inherent beauty and freedom of the game. Deck lighting is the perfect way to finish any decking. Not only is it easy to install but it can also help to create an inviting atmosphere for evening enjoyment in your garden. Learn how to install deck lighting with this step by step guide from one of our Wickes experts. Subscribe to the Wickes YouTube channel here: http://po.st/YijIE1 For more Wickes garden and landscaping videos click here: http://po.st/jAXyHE Before installing your deck lighting you will need to check you have an outdoor, 13 AMP plug socket within five metres of your deck. If you don't, you'll need to have one installed by a qualified electrician. Follow these steps to install your deck lighting: 1. Remove the fascia board. 2. Lay your light fittings out in the positions you want them to be in once installed (keep in mind the lights can't be placed more than 1.2 meters apart) and mark the wood. 3. Reattach the fascia board and drill mounting holes using a 24mm drill bit. 4. Remove the deck boards on top and use the same drill bit to create holes in the joists or noggins. 5. Feed the cables of each light through the mounting holes. 6. Place the lights into position and mount them. 7. Add the blanking plug to the final socket and connect the driver cable to the socket closest to the plug. 8. Position the mains cable and driver out of sight in the decking. 9. Finally, test the lights work and then secure all of the deck boards back into position. ☑️Above Ground Pool Deck Ideas

Wood decks, composite, Stone, Hybrid decks, Resin or aluminum decks. Learn the best deck style is for your pool project. Our Web Site: www.abovegroundpoolbuilder.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Swimaboveground/ Email: [email protected] Here, you will see some really cool deck ideas and learn about the different options available. The first thing you should do prior to building a pool deck is let your imagination set you free . Whatever you can think of is perfectly OK to do. The pool deck you decide on is one that you will look at and use for the next several years, it should be exactly as you desire. There are many new materials available to create the deck of your dreams. Sketch it out on a piece of paper, then it can come to life. Outside change roomOnce you have it sketched, compare your ideas with your family and together you can break down what will be an absolute must and which things to omit. You may want that “water proof cubby for towels” and decide against that outside shower head. By eliminating the things you don’t want will bring about the desired look of your new deck. The most frequently asked questions regarding an above ground pool decks are: “What should the pool’s deck height be?” and “What material are best to use?” Although we are not deck builders here at the Above Ground Pool Builder, we do have some opinions based on our experience. We have seen many decks over the years and know what styles are best when installers come by to replace liners or pools that have decks attached. The next step will involve getting a builder involved and drawing up blueprints. At the very least, go over all your points with potential contractors and choose the contractor that you’re most comfortable with. The contractor will design blueprints of the deck with the correct measurements and include the features you want. From here your budget will dictate whether you need to scale down or add more options. Contractors who build decks for a living will have ideas that may impress you as well. Let the process happen and don’t leave anything to chance. Another question we always get at the Above Ground Pool Builder is “Should we build the deck first?” The answer is “no”. It is very important to build an above ground pool first and then build a deck last. With curves, angles and varying pool top heights it is best to build a deck after the pool is installed. Deck Styles: Cantor• Cantor Lever We think that cantor-levering a deck over the pools edge is a great Idea. The steps and ladders that you use to get in and out of the pool can be adjusted to work with this kind of structure. • Constructed Level with Top Rail, When doing this you want to consider how the top of the pool will come apart? It is best if you go parallel with the first deck board. When it becomes time to change your pool liner you will only have to take off one deck board instead of the entire deck area. You should know how the pool comes apart and build accordingly. • Building Below the Top Rail, We feel this is a good idea as well, just follow the last steps and know how the top system comes apart, this is important when liner needs to be replaced. Halfway down wall• Building Halfway Down the Wall, This is another good idea and you don’t have to worry about how the top comes apart since it will not be affected. With this design you can achieve a multi-level look to your above ground pool deck. By having different levels you can have various areas that serve your needs, such as a sitting area or a grilling area separate from swimming. • Stone Work, Creating a stone patio in combination with your deck makes for a modern looking pool. Try creating a cement patio around parts of the pool. Be sure to create the proper retaining walls so the pool doesn’t collapse. Being creative with your deck will make it your relaxation station. Feel free to look at the following ideas for inspiration. Your pool deck should be a place that you and your family will be proud to relax and enjoy for years to come. Homemade cantilever-style Single Sled Deck

Special thanks to Cyrus Cosmo who's work inspired this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKGFd5ONC2g&t=0s https://www.dropbox.com/s/7284pbrw265971o/sleddeck%20singlecaster.20Dec15.ScottConley.skp?dl=0 Single sled deck, cantilever design so you can load your sled with one hand into your truck bed. I made this under $500, the most expensive item is the caster wheels as they were custom from greyhub (crown tread). I'm sure stock casters would work, but the crown treads make it very smooth. Note: to unload, you don't pull the deck all the way out, just to the pivot point (with pin in) and then release sled brake and it slides down.

How to Assemble Deck Railings with Wickes

05:38
Deck railings come in a variety of attractive styles and are essential if your deck ins't at ground level. Learn how to assemble railings for your deck with this step by step guide from our Wickes experts. Subscribe to the Wickes YouTube channel here: http://po.st/YijIE1 For more Wickes garden and landscaping videos click here: http://po.st/jAXyHE Deck Posts 1. Cut deck posts to whatever size you like, as long as the hand rails can attach to them at at least 900mm from the deck. You can buy your posts pre-notched but if you need to extend your notch further, you can do this using a hand saw or a circular saw. 2. Drill pilot holes before fixing the deck posts to the bearer using two 130mm exterior coach bolts per post and tighten with a socket set. 3. Measure and mark the top of the deck and the fascia where the post will be. 3. Remove the fascia and saw off the section you’ve marked out using a handsaw. 4. Use a jigsaw to remove the top section, put the post into position and check that it’s flush to the decking. 5. Secure the post as before and reattach the fascia. Assembling the Railing 1. Measure the gap between the posts so you can cut the top and bottom rails to fit between them. 2. Measure 81mm from the end of the top rail and mark a line (this line will be where you place your first spindle). Repeat this step the whole way along the top railing until you've marked out where all your spindles will be. 3. Repeat the above for the bottom railing with the addition of drilling a 3mm pilot hole through each mark. 4. Attach the spindles to the bottom rail using 76mm deck screws. 5. Attach the top rail to the spindle using 64mm galvanised finished nail. Fitting the Railing 1. Using L brackets, place the long side centrally into the fillet slot underside of the bottom rail (check the L brackets do not stick out past the end of the rail before fixing the bracket to the bottom rail). 2. Mark on your deck post where you want the top railing to be, making sure it’s at least 900mm from the deck. 3. Centrally place the short side of the L bracket on to the mark and fix the bracket on to each deck post using two 25mm screws. 4. Place the railing assembly on the fixed post L brackets and secure to the underside of the top rail. 5. Centrally locate the bottom rail on the deck post before fixing the bottom rail L bracket using two 25mm screws. 6. Measure and mark 25mm from the end of the rail and mark on each side of the top and bottom rails. 7. Drill a countersunk 3mm pilot hole approximately 30 degrees through the rails and into the post. 8. Finally, use two 50mm screws to secure the rail to the post. TIPS ON DECKING A SHED RAMP 3 OF 3

08:45
After waiting for a couple of days for the rains to stop my son and I went down today to deck the ramp. Because the ramp is so shallow I have to switch my plans to 2x4's instead of 2x6 so that the end of the ramp would be closer to the ground. We installed an 8' ceiling light, but we bought the old style tubes and had to get two of the new high output tubes and finally we have light in the shed. Next we will install the side door. I will be able to use it instead of the pull up door and heat the insides with a kerosene heater as I finish the insides for my workshop/storage barn style shed. Thanks for watching!
