Do your pitches push leads in the wrong direction? If so, then a branding message tweak can help push leads in the right direction. Branding for local small businesses is about building a strong, positive impression so when a consumer needs something, whether it’s karate classes for kids or roof replacement during a renovation, they know exactly which company to call. And when it comes to the messages that build a strong brand, some tend to be more effective than others. Getting Pitchy with It When our livelihood depends on us making the sale, it’s natural to rely on a message that goes for the conversion. But that’s not usually the most effective way to build an instantly recognizable local brand. Imagine how constant get-the-sale messaging would feel in your personal relationships. You meet a friend for coffee, and the entire time he’s trying to get you to purchase whatever he’s selling: buy my stuff...buy my stuff...have you thought about buying my stuff! Or maybe you or a loved one has a friend who clutters Facebook with constant posts selling nail wraps, chic handbags, or consulting services. The conversation is no longer a conversation. It’s a pitch...a neverending pitch that will wear you down over time until you don’t want to connect with that person anymore. Intuitively, we already understand that’s NOT the right way to communicate with family and friends. So why would our companies communicate that way? Creating Volume with Value Instead of asking for the sale at every touchpoint, consider how you can stay top of mind by adding value to the relationship you’re building. That doesn’t mean you can’t ask for the sale at the right time–-you can. But if you offer value through messages that bring useful info to the prospect’s table, that makes your brand sticky in their mind. Ask: how can I consistently give value so when my target audience has a problem they call my business to solve it? For example, if you’re planning seven touchpoints, maybe you focus on offering value during those first five touches. Conversations might include offering tips, tutorials, free resources, or even insights that make their own decision-making easier. A real estate agent might share tips on their blog for prepping a home for sale. A roofing contractor could create a Facebook ad that leads to tips for getting a home exterior ready for storm season. A pet sitter could give out a branded fridge magnet with contact info for local pet emergency services. Adding value is a long-term game, no doubt. But if you consistently provide useful information, when the consumer needs whatever it is your business is awesome at, whether it’s roofing or pet sitting, your name is already at the top of their call list.

“Values matter.” That’s the slogan that Whole Foods has chosen for its first national brand marketing campaign. The message is, Whole Foods provides value to its customers through the values the company uses to select the food products on its shelves. That is, values for money in shopping for groceries is as important as bargain pricing, which Whole Foods is not known for. The company believes that consumers will find that value in the increased information it provides about where the food comes from, and how it was grown, raised, and made. Whole Foods is serious about getting out this message. The campaign’s budget is estimated at between fifteen and twenty million dollars. It’s the latest example of what Madison Avenue calls variously “conscious capitalism,” “cause marketing,” and “purpose marketing.” It’s an appeal to customers to support food companies that operate in a socially responsible manner. Other food companies are carrying out similar campaigns, including Panera Bread, Chipotle, and McDonald’s, which launched a campaign last week to improve how consumers think about the quality of its food. The ultimate goal of these and other efforts is to make the socially responsibility of a brand an integral part of its identity and its equity.
