Russia-Ukraine Tensions: Moscow's 'blockade' of Sea of Azov angers Kiev

02:37
For four years government forces and Kremlin-backed rebels have been fighting in eastern Ukraine. Now, Russia is being accused of trying to blockade the country. It's had an impact on the Ukrainian ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk, where earnings have fallen by almost a quarter in the first seven months of 2018, compared to last year. Along with Kiev, the European Union and the United States say the strategy is part of Moscow's military expansion in the Sea of Azov. And many are concerned the tensions could escalate. Russia's 'blockade' of Sea of Azov port angers Ukraine

01:07
Huge cranes that once used to unload ships' cargo sit idle on the docks of Ukraine's commercial port of Mariupol on the Sea of Azov. The small sea is located in a zone of heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine: on the border of the Crimean peninsula annexed by Russia. As tensions escalate, Kiev and the West accuse Russia of deliberately blocking ships from accessing Ukraine's port.

Ukraine to sue Russia for offensive actions in Sea of Azov

00:34
Ukraine intends to raise the issue of Russia’s interference in the Sea of Azov and actions in the occupied Crimea by turning to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. Ukraine’s permanent representative in the UN Volodymyr Yelchenko said that the next session of this authority is slated for late 2018. According to the Ukrainian official, this question is already often mentioned in Ukraine’s lawsuits against Russia, when it comes to the UN International Court. ******************************************************************* 112 International: Breaking News and Analysis from Ukraine and Around the World ******************************************************************* Visit our web-site: http://112.international/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/112UAInternational/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/112NewsFeed

Is Russia Annexing The Azov Sea?

12:25
Tensions are escalating in the Azov Sea as historical territorial claims, botched agreements, and heightened military presence threaten the stability of the region and Ukrainian economic endeavors. The appearance of six Russian vessels – patrol personnel-carriers and draught gunboats – in mid-June, as well as FSB border checkpoints through the Kerch Strait, are signs of increasing aggression and loss of strategic balance in the region. While the situation has not yet escalated into military conflict, experts claim that Russia’s actions mark an attempt to suppress the economic activity of Ukraine’s regional ports and trade. Hromadske explores the crisis first hand, from delayed flights and shipping obstacles to possible Ukrainian responses to Russia’s de-facto blockade of Ukraine’s Azov ports. Sea of Azov

03:24
The Sea of Azov is a sea in south-eastern Europe. To the south it is linked by the narrow (about 4 km or 2.5 mi) Strait of Kerch to the Black Sea, and it is sometimes regarded as a northern extension of the Black Sea. The sea is bounded in the north by mainland Ukraine, in the east by Russia, and in the west by the Crimean Peninsula. The Don and Kuban are the major rivers that flow into it. The Sea of Azov is the shallowest sea in the world, with the depth varying between 0.9 and 14 meters (2 ft 11 in and 45 ft 11 in). There is a constant outflow of water from the Sea of Azov to the Black Sea. The sea is largely affected by the inflow of numerous rivers, which bring sand, silt, and shells, which in turn form numerous bays, limans, and narrow spits. Because of these deposits, the sea bottom is relatively smooth and flat with the depth gradually increasing toward the middle. Also, due to the river inflow, water in the sea has low salinity and a high amount of biomass (such as green algae) that affects the water colour. Abundant plankton results in unusually high fish productivity. The sea shores and spits are low; they are rich in vegetation and bird colonies. The name likely derives from the settlement of and area around Azov, whose name comes from the Kipchak Turkish asak or azaq ("lowlands"). A Russian folk etymology, however, instead derives it from an eponymous Cuman prince named "Azum" or "Asuf", said to have been killed defending his town in 1067. A formerly common spelling of the name in English was the Sea of Azoff, which is closer to the Russian pronunciation. In antiquity, the sea was usually known as the Maeotis Swamp from the marshlands to its northeast.[ It remains unclear whether it was named for the nearby Maeotians or if that name was applied broadly to various peoples who happened to live beside it. Other names included Lake Maeotis or Maeotius (Mæotius or Mæotis Lacus); the Maeotium or Maeotic Sea (Mæotium or Mæoticum Æquor); the Cimmerian or Scythican Swamps (Cimmeriae or Scythicæ Paludes); and the Cimmerian or Bosporic Sea (Cimmericum or Bosporicum Mare). The Maeotians themselves were said by Pliny to call the sea Temarenda or Temerinda, meaning "Mother of Waters". The medieval Russians knew it as the Sea of Surozh after the adjacent city now known as Sudak. It was known in Ottoman Turkish as the Balük-Denis ("Fish Sea") from its high productivity.

Crisis in Ukraine : Russia Extends its Control over the Black Sea and Strategic Waterways

10:03
Crisis in Ukraine: Russia Extends its Control over the Black Sea and Strategic Waterways On May 15, President Vladimir Putin took part in the opening ceremony of the Crimean Bridge – “a super 19-kilometre-long construction” linking Crimea to Russia’s Krasnodar region. This bridge is strategic and broader the economic and geopolitical implications in the region. The decision of Crimea to join the Russian Federation has strategic and geopolitical implications. The union of Crimea with Russia redefines both the geography as well as the geopolitical chessboard in the Black Sea basin. It constitutes a major setback for US-NATO, whose longstanding objective has been to integrate Ukraine into NATO with a view to undermining Russia, while extending Western military presence in the Black Sea basin. With the March 18, 2014 Treaty signed between Russia and Crimea, the Russian Federation will extend its control over the Black Sea as well over the Sea of Azov, the West coastline of which borders on Eastern Ukraine and the Donesk region. Under the agreement between Russia and Crimea announced by president Putin, two “constituent regions” of Crimea will join the Russian Federation: the “Republic of Crimea” and the “City of Sevastopol”. Both will have the status of “autonomous regions”. The status of Sevastopol as an autonomous entity separate from Crimea is related to the location of Russia’s Naval base in Sevastopol. Since the break-up of the Soviet Union, Russia retained its naval base in Sevastopol under a bilateral agreement with Ukraine. With the signing of the March 18th Treaty, that agreement is null and void. Sevastopol including the Russian naval base become part of an autonomous region within the Russian Federation. The naval base is no within Ukraine under a lease agreement. Moreover, Crimea’s territorial waters now belong to the Russian Federation. Russia now formally controls a much larger portion of the Black Sea, which includes the entire coastline of the Crimean peninsula. The Eastern part of Crimea –including the Kerch straits– are now under Russia’s jurisdiction control. On the Eastern side of the Kerch straits is Russia’s Krasnodar region and extending southwards are the port cities of Novorossiysk and Sochi. Novorossiysk is also strategic. It is Russia’s largest commercial port on the Black Sea, at the cross-roads of major oil and gas pipelines between the Black Sea and Caspian sea. Historically, the Kerch straits have played a strategic role. They constitute a gateway from the Black Sea to Russia’s major waterways including the Don and the Volga. During World War II, the Kerch peninsula occupied by Nazi Germany was an important point of transit by land and water. In the coldest months of Winter, it became an ice bridge linking Crimea to the Krasnodar region. The Kerch straits are about 5 kilometers in length and 4.5 km. wide at the narrowest point between the tip of Eastern Crimea and the peninsula of Taman. Kerch is a major commercial port linked to railway, ferry and river routes. the integration of Crimea into the Russian Federation means that Moscow is now in full control of the Kerch Straits linking the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov. The Ukrainian authorities are no longer in control of the port of Kerch. The bilateral agreement between Russia and Ukraine governing the maritime route through the Kerch straights has been scrapped. The straits constitute an entry point into Russia’s major river waterways. The Sea of Azov connects with the Don River and the Volga, through the Volga Don Canal. In turn, the Volga flows into the Caspian sea. The Kerch straits are strategic. The Kerch-Yenikalskiy Canal allows large vessels to transit from the Black sea to the Sea of Azov. the Kerch Straits link the Black Sea to the Volga which in turn connects to the Moscow river through the Volga-Moskva canal. Full control of the narrow Kerch straits by Russia ensures unimpeded maritime transit from the Black Sea to Russia’s capital as well as the maritime route to the Caspian Sea. The Russia-Ukraine 2013 agreement pertaining to the construction of the bridge had, for all purposes already been scrapped before March 16. Crimea’s union to Russia was already in the pipeline prior to the referendum, it was a fait accompli. Less than two weeks before the March 16 Referendum, at the height of the crisis in Ukraine, Russia’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev ordered the state-road building corporation “Russian Highways” “to create a subsidiary company that will oversee the building of a bridge across the Kerch Strait”. This bridge would largely be geared towards train transport routes linking Western and Eastern Europe to the Caspian Sea basin, Kazakhstan and China. subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9IFRHTtYJFjhI5fBrLIJiQ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DNA997

Ukraine attacks militia at Sea of Azov

01:04
The Ukrainian Naval Forces have attacked positions of the militia on the coast of the Sea of Azov. It was reported by the Donetsk News Agency. According to Deputy Commander of the Donetsk People’s Republic’s Operative Command Eduard Basurin, the Ukrainian motorboats shelled positions of the Republic’s militia. The incident happened on the coast of the Sea of Azov. Fire was opened from small-calibre guns and heavy machine guns. The Republic’s militia returned fire, as it was a remarkable violation of the ceasefire regime. Two motorboats then left to the city of Mariupol. The Ukrainian Armed Forces also restored shelling against the Donetsk filtration plant. Mortar fire was opened Sunday morning. Despite the parties’ having agreed not to carry out offensive, the Ukrainian Armed Forces broke the promise. The Ukrainian marines who serve in the area of the city of Mariupol, claimed that militia might attack them, advancing across the frozen sea. Before that the Ukrainian army lost 15 people while trying to break through positions of the militia on the coast of the Sea of Azov, 25 men got injured. The Crimean War - The Sea of Azov naval campaign 1855

01:11
During the Crimean War (1853–1856), a naval campaign was fought in the Sea of Azov between the Royal Navy and the French Navy against the Russian Navy between 25 May–22 November 1855. British and French warships struck at every vestige of Russian power along the coast of the Sea of Azov. Except for Rostov and Azov, no town, depot, building or fortification was immune from attack and Russian naval power ceased to exist almost overnight. Contrary to established images of the Russian War, here was a campaign which was well-planned, dynamically led and overwhelmingly successful. The British authorities, significantly, issued the bar "Azoff" to the British Crimean War Medal, thus acknowledging the services of those who waged the most successful operations against the Russians during the war of 1854-1856. The bar was awarded only to the Royal Navy, together with units of the Royal Marines present during the campaign. The unauthorised French clasp, reading Mer d'Azoff , was worn by sailors of the French Navy.

Oleksandr Khara on Russia’s Blockade of Ukraine’s Azov Sea Ports

07:14
In addition to the war in Ukraine’s east that has left over 10,000 dead, Russia is leading another war in its neighbouring country. And this is all taking off near the Ukrainian coast of the Azov Sea. Despite the fact not a single drop of blood has been shed in this conflict, it could lead to serious unprecedented damage to Ukraine’s economy. “[Russia’s] aim is to cut the sea lanes to Ukraine,” explains Oleksandr Khara, Deputy Chair at the Black Sea Institute of Strategic Studies. “Up to 80% of [Ukraine’s] exports go via the sea. It will damage Ukraine greatly if they succeed.” According to Khara, the blockade of Ukraine’s Azov Sea ports started in April 2015 when the “illegal construction of the bridge along the Kerch Strait” began. “From that time, [Russia has been] stopping [Ukrainian] vessels and closing the sea for any movements.” Khara adds that Russia has also deployed several shallow gunboats, submarines, corvettes capable of “striking up to central Ukraine” and Kalibr missiles. “They are threatening [Ukraine] by deploying these types of assault weapons,” he says. According to the 2003 agreement signed between the Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine’s then-President Leonid Kuchma, both countries can use the Azov Sea freely. This same agreement, Khara says, allows Russia to position their vessels near the shore of Ukraine. In Khara’s opinion, annulling this agreement is one of the keys to ensuring a resolution to the conflict. Highlighting that Russia understands force well, he adds that Ukraine also needs to enforce and better equip its navy. But Russia’s actions are not just about the “passage of vessels,” Khara adds. “It's about undermining Ukrainian sovereignty, militarizing both [the Azov and the Black] seas, and then unfolding aggression in another direction.” Hromadske spoke with Oleksandr Khara, the Deputy Chair at the Black Sea Institute of Strategic Studies, about the increasing tension between Ukraine and Russia over the Ukrainian coast of the Azov Sea.
Ukrainian Navy boats prevent provocation attempt in Sea of Azov

00:36
A Russian naval vessel went for another provocation, trying to approach Ukrainian ships in the Sea of Azov. The press office of the Ukrainian Navy uploaded the video showing that Russian border guard boat tried to approach the Ukrainian vessels, moving dangerously close to it. Two Ukrainian cannon boats stepped in and did not let the Russian vessel come even closer. It eventually left the area. As is known, the Ukrainian Navy is now building up a base in Berdyansk, on the coast of the Sea of Azov. ******************************************************************* 112 International: Breaking News and Analysis from Ukraine and Around the World ******************************************************************* Visit our web-site: http://112.international/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/112UAInternational/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/112NewsFeed
