Thermal Design of Electronic Equipment by S.Rajaram

01:13:01
ABSTRACT Performance and reliability of today's high-speed electronic systems depends critically upon good thermal design. Majority of field failures in electronics equipment are due to high temperature effects. Inadequate cooling always results in higher component temperature leading to failures. Increases in speed of Very Large Scale Integrated circuits ( VLSI ) have led to extremely high heat dissipation, making thermal considerations the limiting factor for performance. With miniaturization of micro-electronics and demand for small product form, heat fluxes on devices are constantly increasing and thermal design has become a critical factor in electronics equipment design. Thermal design aspects, if considered well in advance, can help in avoiding time and cost over-runs in critical product development and ensure better reliability. Thermal design of electronic equipment is a multifaceted subject invoking all areas of classical heat transfer. Actual electronic systems differ considerably from classical studies. Based on vast industrial experience, this seminar will give a broad overview of the practical and systematic thermal design process in a building block manner from whole systems to circuit boards, and packages that are practiced in industry today It also bridges the gap between academic studies and actual equipment design, to enable the engineer to design electronic systems for maximum reliability. Due to increasingly severe thermal constraints, such a systematic procedure is necessary at the earliest stage in design. The emphasis will be on practical applications, and actual equipment problems. Dr. S. Rajaram is a Senior Manager at Alcatel-Lucent, New Jersey, USA. He joined Bell Labs in 1981, and has worked extensively on thermal design, reliability engineering and testing of a wide range of electronics products in the data and telecom industry. He is one of the primary architects of the Environmental Stress testing (EST) at Lucent Technologies. He has trained engineers at Bell Labs and given short courses in the U.S, Europe, Taiwan, Singapore, India and China. He spent one year as a United Nations Expert to train electronics engineers in India. He received his Ph.D. in Engineering Science from the State University of New York at Buffalo. With a major in Mechanical Engineering, and a minor in Electromagnetics, he is knowledgeable in mechanical, thermal design, manufacturing, reliability/quality engineering and electrical aspects of electronics packaging and network engineering. He is currently a Product Manager in the Applications Software Group.

Managing Your Platform as a Product with Scott Shaw - ThoughtWorks Talks Tech

45:16
Speaker: Scott Shaw A digital platform is a foundation of self-service APIs, tools, services, knowledge and support arranged as a compelling internal product. Autonomous delivery teams can make use of the platform to deliver product features at a higher pace with reduced coordination.  Increasingly, we see large enterprises building their own digital platforms in emulation of successful online businesses.  These platforms accelerate digital product delivery by reducing friction between teams and streamlining electronic access to core business capabilities. In this talk, I'll introduce the concept of a digital platform, explain why they accelerate delivery, provide some examples and describe the technical pillars that support the platform.  I'll describe the qualities necessary for platform success then focus on the key factor; managing the platform as a product. Successful products incorporate the voice of the customer in a collaborative, evolutionary design process.  In the case of digital platforms, the customer or consumer is an internal software developer, so developer experience (DX) becomes a critical factor.  To wrap up, I'll talk about the importance of having a strong platform manager and the evolving role of architects in a platform ecosystem. About Scott Shaw: As the Head of Technology for ThoughtWorks in Australia, Scott divides his time between professional services leadership and consulting. As a consultant, he helps enterprise customers to shape their technology to align with 21st century practices like cloud, continuous delivery, microservices and lean governance. As a lifelong programmer and technology professional, Scott has designed and worked on distributed systems of every imaginable size and shape. When he’s not in meetings, Scott enjoys writing Clojure code. The Role of a Product Manager: Everything and Nothing - Josh Elman at Mozilla Speaker Series

59:25
March 24, 2016 "The job of a product manager is to help your team (and company) ship the right product to your users.” Seems simple - but anyone who has worked on a product knows it's not. At what point are you ready to ship? What is the right product? How do you know when you've built it? And often more complicated than it sounds: who are your users? Josh Elman of Greylock VC says the best PMs are less product thought leaders and visionaries (though they certainly may be), but moreso shepherds of stakeholders and builders of processes to sort through these critical challenges. While they typically don't produce tangible artifacts such as code or mockups, the ultimate success of the team and product can hinge on the effectiveness of the product manager. In short, product management done well helps make companies and products much better. But when done badly, it can significantly hurt a company and team.
