Visual Design Principles: 5 things you should know to create persuasive content

09:48
Read a case study of how visual design principles work here http://blog.visme.co/data-storytelling-tips/ To communicate visually, you have to understand how humans absorb visual information. A problem with visually designed content is that people too often create visuals for the camera and not for humans. It may surprise you to know that people do not process images like a camera. Your brain has a 2% field of vision vs. the 180% field of view of the camera. The camera's large field of view means that it’s able to get all the information in front of it in one go. Visual design principles tell us the human eye processes visual content by rapid eye movements called Saccades. Saccades are when the eye is quickly moving around an environment grabbing small pieces of information to build the bigger picture. Your brain thinks it sees a complete image, but in reality, it’s absorbing small pieces of it. So the question is HOW does visual design for the human eye? Or more importantly; how do we create content that will encourage people to take the action we want? That’s exactly what I’m going to go through in this video: You’ll learn: 1. How to establish your focal point for the reader 2. How to differentiate between areas of importance 3. You’ll also learn how patterns are your friend 4. The effect of simplifying your focus 5. And finally, you’ll learn how to create subtle interactivity that draws the reader towards key areas of your content." Now, let's go over the steps in the visual design principles

Innovation - Students of Product Design Episode1

12:49
This series 'Students of Product Design' is aimed at anyone interested in the product design process. This first episode looks at innovation, how to innovate and how simply changing the structure of the brief can impact on how innovative you can be. This series won't just talk about stuff, the plan is to share with you as many of the things I have learnt in the last 15 years (or so..) as possible through each stage of the design process to help you become far better designers than I can ever be. I'll be looking at research, sketching, model making, portfolios and a whole load of other things. I often think of youtube as a speed learning tool. Have you ever seen the Matrix films where Neo first learns martial arts by uploading a programme to his head or Trinity learns to fly a helicopter in minutes, that's how I see Youtube, Youtube is our version of the Matrix. So this series which is primarily aimed at students studying industrial design, product design or design engineering in university is designed to do just that, give you a knowledge boost to hopefully make your projects, designs, presentations and portfolio a lot better to improve your chances of getting a position as a designer, or your projects if you want to start your own company, anything related to design. I also hope with the content, that everyone will be able to take something away from it as many of the tips I'll give over the course of this series will be applicable to lots of areas of life. There's just isn't enough out there on product design, compared to say cookery shows it's very under provisioned and so I'm trying to redress the balance. I have a lot more planned, so please be patient, stay tuned and follow me, so that you can be alerted to when the next video is launched. www.producttank.co.uk

The Design Thinking Process

03:57
Crash Course: https://dschool.stanford.edu/resources/virtual-crash-course-video Guide for Facilitators: https://dschool.stanford.edu/resources/gear-up-how-to-kick-off-a-crash-course Design Thinking is a 5-step process to come up with meaningful ideas that solve real problems for a particular group of people. The process is taught in top design and business schools around the world. It has brought many businesses lots of happy customers and helped entrepreneurs from all around the world, to solve problems with innovative new solutions. Step 1: Empathize The purpose of step one is to conduct interviews that give you an idea about what people really care about. We need to empathize with their situation. For example, if you want to help old people, you might find that they want to keep the ability to walk around. In your conversations, they might share with you different ways they can do that. Later into the interview you'll want to dig a little deeper, look for personal stories or situations where things became difficult. Ideally, you redo the process with many people with the same problem. Step 2: Define the Problem Looking at the interviews, you can now understand the actual needs that people are trying to fulfill with certain activities. One way to do that is to underline the verbs or activities that the people mentioned when talking about their problems: like going for a walk, meeting old friends for tea, or simply going grocery shopping around the corner store. You might realize it's not so much about going out, but more about staying in touch. After your analysis, formulate a problem statement: “Some elderly are afraid to be lonely. The want to stay connected.” Step 3: Ideate Now focus only on the problem statement and come up with ideas that solve the problem. The point is not to get a perfect idea, but rather to come up with as many ideas: like unique virtual reality experiences, senior friendly hover boards or a modified pushcart. Whatever it is, sketch up your best ideas and show them to the people you are trying to help, so you get their feedback. Step 4: Prototype Now take a moment to reflect on what you have learned from your conversations about the different ideas. Ask yourself, how does your idea fit in the context of people's actual lives. Your solution could be a combination of a new idea and what is already being used. Then connect the dots, sketch up your final solution and go build a real prototype that's just good enough to be tested. Step 5: Test Now test your prototype with actual users. Don't defend your idea in case people don't like it, the point is to learn what works and what didn't, so any feedback is great. Then go back to ideation or prototyping and apply your learning. Repeat the process until you have a prototype that works and solves the real problem. Now you are ready to change the world or open shop. To experience design thinking first hand, do the free virtual design thinking crash course from Stanford’s D-School right now. You will learn to design a new gift giving experience. Find the link and a guide for facilitators in the description below. Examples of Modular User Interface Design

03:01
This video lesson is part of the tutorial “Designing in a Modular Way". You can view the written tutorial at http://bit.ly/2A7WGOe ------ About the Tutorial Modular design encourages us to think and design user interfaces and user experiences in patterns. For example, instead of designing a series of pages or views to enable a user to accomplish a task, the design process starts by first understanding the way the UI system is structured and which components that can be used to create the user flow. In this course, we will explore the concepts of modular design and their application to UI design. We will also delve into how you can create designs in a modular way and how you can use a living style guide to aide the process. See more at http://www.styleguidedrivendevelopment.com

Design Theory: How To Make Dynamic Compositions

14:48
How to make your motion design frames more dimensional. Create dynamic compositions with this one trick. One tip to make your designs more impactful. One simple tip for how to make your designs, photos, and illustrations better. Blind creative director, Matthew Encina, joins Chris Do in this quick tutorial/lesson on creating more dynamic compositions. To keep things simple and clearly illustrate what I mean, I’ve put together a few greyscale examples that show how adding contrast to your frames can drastically improve your compositions and effectiveness of your storytelling. If you ever find yourself stuck with a boring composition, push the contrast in the value, weight, size, and color of your subjects. Start drastically, then pull it back. One formula I like to use often is: 1 really BIG object — usually the subject, and most important element in the frame. 1–2 medium sized objects — secondary elements to give meaning to the main object. Tons of very tiny objects — tertiary elements to give movement and additional context for the frame. Architecture Short Course: How to Develop a Design Concept

19:24
All architecture begins with a concept. If you’re struggling to find one, curious about what one is, or wondering how architects begin their projects; this short course will walk you through the process I use and some of the techniques I rely on to develop architectural concepts all illustrated with one of my residential projects. Design is a dialogue, and the concept ensures you have something to talk about. In this video I discuss the precise steps I take when beginning each project and how those steps lead me to an architectural concept. Before we can develop the concept, we have to first understand the practical constraints. My design process begins only after gathering and assessing all the given parameters for a project. Now, this primarily consists of three types of information. There’s information derived from the site - things like: local climate, the prevailing winds, the solar aspect, vegetation, neighboring structures, the site’s history, and any unique liabilities or opportunities. The site of course also comes along with legal frameworks for development, which describe where and what we can and can’t build. The second type of information we’ll gather is from the client. Every client has a set of cultural beliefs and preconceptions, preferences and agendas. Of course, we’ll want to determine their budget, and understand the personality traits and organizational politics which might also shape the design. The client and the building type together determine what architects call, “the program” which is essentially a detailed accounting of all the spaces the building will contain. And the third type of information I gather is related to the building typology – is it a museum, a home…or a school for example? To learn about a building typology we often conduct an analysis of notable or relevant historical precedents. We want to know the essential problems these types of structures grapple with. Understanding the history of the archetype allows us to approach a problem from a fresh perspective. All of this is necessary information that we collect for every project. This inventory can also serve as the progenitor for the design concept – our seed idea. And, rather than shunting creativity, these constraints often incite the creative process. Concept Inspirations Discussed: - Site - Client - Narrative - Materials - Structural - Mainifestos - Formal As with a good film, the setting, the characters, the cinematography, and the plot all conspire to make it what it is. It’s the experience you’ll recall rather than the concept per se. Sure, the concept sets the film in motion and it’s the starting point for all that follows. But this concept – the one or two-line description – can’t possible capture the richness and depth of the finished film…or in our case the architecture. Yet without it, the work is unfulfilling and so it should be clear that the concept is necessary for all our work as architects. // GEAR I USE // DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 70D: http://amzn.to/29klz7k LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice? Inclusive Design Principles – Henny Swan : #ID24 2017

48:36
Inclusive design is about putting people first. It's about designing for the needs of people with permanent, temporary, situational, or changing disabilities – all of us really. These principles are a springboard for taking your products beyond accessibility, making them intuitive and easy to use for disabled people while showcasing beautiful design for all. They are intended for use by anyone involved in the design and development of websites and applications: designers, user experience professionals, developers, product owners, idea makers, innovators, artists and thinkers. They are intended for use in the design process to help ensure teams create products that are flexible and accommodating. Henny will walk you through the reasons why the team – Léonie Watson, Ian Pouncey, Heydon Pickering and herself – put these principles together, how they inform the design process, and share some examples and stories to illustrate each.
