The river water from Fraser River, flowing into the ocean water of the Strait of Georgia. Modern Science has discovered that in the places where two different bodies meet, there is a barrier between them. This barrier creates a noticeable line, as each water body has its own temperature, salinity, and density. Survival Camping: #1 Turn Seawater into Fresh Water with Trash
The purpose of this adventure was to have fun while practicing survival skills. I carried an ultralight backpack, camped between the sand dunes and used trash on the beach to distill seawater. Two cups of drinking water per hour! Amazingly simple. Awesome fun. During the past several years I’ve been intersted in making portable stills for water distillation: simple approaches that could be used when hiking, especially in emergencies. The stills I’ve made have continuously improved, with the help for may people from the bushcraft and survival YouTube community. As my friend Darby (RiverBendSurvival) says: “The only way to master it, is to get in the dirt and do it.” Distillation removes biological, salt and heavy metal contamination from drinking water. Distallation is often the preferred method of water treatment in deveoping countries where water is heavily contaminated. Distillation is used for drinking water on ships. What Happens When You Drink SeaWater?

As clean drinking water becomes more scarce, you maybe wondering…What happens if I drink seawater? Let’s first examine how our bodies absorb water. You may remember the process of Osmosis where water moves from a less concentrated solution to a more concentrated solution, through a semi permeable membrane. The cell’s membrane allows water to pass through, but not the particles dissolved in water, like salt. Normally the saltiness of water inside our cells is the same as the saltiness outside our cells. When you drink water, a concentration difference takes place. Water from the outside your cell moves inside to maintain balance. This is called an isotonic state. When you drink too much seawater, the saltiness outside your cells will increase rapidly and the cells force water molecules out in order to restore balance. So even if you are already dehydrated, drinking sea water will cause your cells to release more water and you will end up peeing out more liquid than you take in. Conversely if you chug a massive amount of pure water, the exact opposite will happen. The saltiness outside your cells will decrease rapidly and water will be forced into your cells. This can cause the cells to swell and burst, which in extreme cases leads to seizures, coma and sometimes death! This would only occur if you were to chug 6 liters or more in an instant though. So what can you do if you are stranded on a deserted island with absolutely NO fresh water around? The simplest way to extract fresh clean water from the ocean is through distillation, which separates the salt from the water. In order to distill water you must heat the sea water so it evaporates, then trap the evaporated water vapor until it cools and condenses back into liquid water. Kinda like the moisture on your bathroom mirror after a hot shower. This condensed water will be free of all salt and 100% safe to drink. Clearly, I do not want you to get stuck on a deserted island. Also, thankfully, I was not stuck on a deserted island myself; thus finding a plastic container wasn't too difficult. This video was a contrived attempt to urge middle school students to think about evaporation and condensation. Please do not use this method to distill water if you are actually stuck on an island. The water you produce will not be drinkable. Finally, here are some reliable sources that offer advice on how to collect drinking water in case you do get stranded. 1) National Geographic suggests that if you get stranded on an island, then your best chance of getting drinking water is to "collect rainwater." Distillation involves boiling the water and then condensing the steam into a clean container... Drinking water has been distilled from sea water since at least about AD 200, when the process was clearly described by Alexander of Aphrodisias. Its history predates this, as a passage in Aristotle's Meteorologica (II.3, 358b16) refers to the distillation of water. Captain Israel Williams of the Friendship (1797) improvised a way to distill water, which he described in his journal. Applications In chemical and biological laboratories, as well as in industry, cheaper alternatives such as deionized water are preferred to distilled water. But if these alternatives are not pure enough, distilled water is used. If exceptionally high purity water is required, double distilled water is used. Distilled water is also commonly used to top off lead acid batteries used in cars and trucks. The presence of other ions commonly found in tap water will drastically reduce an automobile battery's lifespan. Distilled water is preferable to tap water for use in automotive cooling systems. The minerals and ions typically found in tap water can be corrosive to internal engine components, and can cause a faster depletion of the anti-corrosion additives found in most antifreeze formulations. Distilled water is also preferable to tap water for use in model steam engine boilers and model engines of other types. Mineral build-up resulting from the use of tap water in model boilers can severely reduce the efficiency of the boilers if run for long periods. This build-up is known as boiler scale. Some people use distilled water for household aquariums because it lacks the chemicals found in tap water. It is important to supplement distilled water when using it for fishkeeping; it is too pure to sustain the chemical reactions needed to support an aquarium ecosystem. Distilled water is also essential for use in cigar humidors. Mineral build-up resulting from the use of tap water (including bottled water) will reduce the effectiveness of the humidor. In contrast, some home brewers who want to brew a traditional European Pilsner will dilute their hard water with distilled water so as to mimic the soft waters of Pilsen. Another application was to increase the density of the air to assist early airplane jet engines during takeoff in "hot and high" atmospheric conditions, as was used on the early Boeing 707. Distilled water is also used in Constant Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines to humidify the air entering the user's nasal cavity, mouth, and throat. Distilled water will not leave any contaminants behind when the humidifier in the CPAP machine evaporates the water. Until World War II, distilling sea water to produce fresh water was time-consuming and expensive in fuel. The saying was: "It takes one gallon of fuel to make one gallon of fresh water." Shortly before the war, Dr. R.V. Kleinschmidt developed a compression still, which became known as the Kleinschmidt Still, for extracting fresh water from sea water or contaminated water. By compressing the steam produced by boiling water, 175 gallons of fresh water could be extracted from sea water for every gallon of fuel used. During World War II this equipment became standard on Allied ships and on trailer mounts for armies. This method was in widespread use in ships and portable water distilling units during the latter half of the century. Modern vessels now use flash-type evaporators to boil sea water, heating the water to between 70-80 °C and evaporating the water in a vacuum; this is then collected as condensation before being stored. Solar stills can be relatively simple to design and build, with very cheap materials...

LEADIN: Scientists claim that if you look down at Earth from outer space, around 71 percent of the planet's surface is covered by ocean. But is the water fit to drink? Well engineers in Los Angeles in the United States are now working to turn Pacific Ocean salt water into safe, tasty drinking water. STORYLINE: A team of water workers from the Los Angeles area have borrowed some space at this beach front power plant to do just that. They've set up a test project to take in salt water from the nearby ocean, run it through a series of filters, and turn it into drinking water. They call it desalination -- or desal for short. And it's a proven process of turning ocean salt water into fresh water. A desal pilot program was launched here four years ago by the West Basin Municipal Water District, which manages the water needs for some 900-thousand consumers in Southern California, near Los Angeles. They can produce more than a thousand gallons of desalinated water per hour. For now it's just a test, and is not available to the public. Officials say it's proof that ocean water can be a safe and satisfying source of fresh water. So how does it taste? Officials say the proof is in the drink. They claim their thirsty customers consume an average of more than 190 gallons of water per person each day. Primitive Technology Salt Water Filter is a full video tutorial on how to survive on an island where there is no fresh water. First we built a primitive pot, we perforated a small hole on the pot. Then we took a bamboo tube and made a chiller. Cooling water so that water vapor can condense into droplets to obtain maximum water. We take the sea water to boil. Fresh water then evaporates and produces fresh water. Salt will precipitate at the bottom of the pot. By the original technology we had to salvage sea water to obtain fresh water and salt. How do we separate the salt from the water? Well, an Indian-American teenage boy has the answer! Chaitanya Karamchedu has made that possible by finding a cheaper and easier method to turn salt water into drinkable fresh water! Karamchedu's research, which began as a science experiment in his high school classroom, is turning quite a few heads and has caught the attention of major technology firms and universities. The Jesuit High School Senior told KPTV that he has big plans of changing the world. "1 in 8 people do not have access to clean water, it's a crying issue that needs to be addressed," said Karamchedu. He made up his mind to address the matter himself. "The best access for water is the sea, so 70 per cent of the planet is covered in water and almost all of that is the ocean, but the problem is that's salt water," said Karamchedu. "The real genesis of the idea was realising that sea water is not fully saturated with salt," he was quoted as saying. By experimenting with a highly absorbent polymer, the teen discovered a cost effective way to remove salt from ocean water and turn it into fresh water.

Freshwater fish vs seawater fish ion regulation-Animal Physiology
"Fish gills regulate ion differently in freshwater and saltwater." Marine water fish blood has a higher water concentration than their surrounding sea water. causing water molecules to diffuse out of the blood into their surrounding water by osmosis. These fish must replace the lost water, by the drinking their surrounding concentrated water, intaking salts which is then removed by active transport through their gills Na+-Cl- ATPase molecules, back to the seawater. Ion exchange in saltwater fish: The Na+ K+/2Cl- (NKCC) co-transporter brings in potassium ion (K+) and chloride ion (Cl-) from the extracellular fluid in the fish gill epithelial cells using the Na+ electrochemical gradient. The K+ and the Na+ separate from the 2Cl- in the the cell. The 2Cl- separate out and exit the cell through the apical surface via the Chloride channel down their concentration gradient. the K+ goes back to the extracellular fluid via the K+ channel from the cell. Na+ exit the cell that had entered through the NKCC via the Na+/K+ ATPase channel in exchange for K+ causing small potential difference (outside more negative due to the Cl- ions exiting than compared to the extracellular fluid) it drives the outward movement Na+ outside the cell. In freshwater fish water is absorbed through gills and skin by diffusion into the blood. While water moves in towards the higher osmotic pressure of the blood, Na+ and Cl- ions diffuse out of the fish, moving down their concentration gradients to the external environment. The fish then can actively take up the ions across their gills epithelial membranes from the surrounding environment to replace the constant loss of ions. Food is another way by which to replace lost Na+ and Cl-. Ion regulation is freshwater fish: The mechanism for Na+ uptake and Cl- are independent. From the dilute freshwater to the concentrated blood Na+ is actively transported against the concentration gradient. H+ is excreted out in exchange for Na+. The Cl-/HCO3 - exchange secretes the bicarbonate ion (HCO3-) in exchange for Cl- ions. HCO3- and H+ are metabolic wastes that are derived from the conversion carbon-dioxide(CO2) using carbonate anhydrase (CA). These metabolic wastes (H+ and HCO3) keeps it from generating large potential differences across the gill epithelium in freshwater fish. A protein that is responsible for sodium uptake uses ATP to exchange Na+ for K+. Traditional desalination plants adversely im- pact the environment in two major aspects: Energy costs: prohibitive cost of energy necessary for osmotic separation is a key drawback, Marine environment: the brine’s high specific weight and the additional chemi- cals introduced in the pretreatment stage harm the marine ecosystem. When fossil energy sources are used, they contribute to deteriorating climate change, which negatively affects the water cycle, thereby intensifying the original problem that desalination is intending to solve. For desalination to remain a viable option in a world with a rapidly changing climate and increasing droughts, renewable energy sources must to be used for powering at least part of its requirements. Desalination, once considered a costly ne- cessity to create usable water in remote desert regions or third world nations, is going mainstream in a big way. Producing drinkable water from seawater, brackish water and other marginal sources isn’t a new idea, but it’s now getting to be a necessary one. With growing populations demanding more clean water, and traditional sources plagued by overuse and under supply, desalination is no longer the water world’s poor stepchild. Desalination is generally considered to be an expensive technology, especially when compared to conservation and water recycling programs. However, there are a number of ways in which costs of traditional water sources may rise in the future: Increasing demand for freshwater, Decreasing supplies of freshwater, Increasing costs of maintaining existing water supplies in a fresh state, Alteration of existing pricing schedule to reflect true cost of water provision. Thanks to improved technology, smart en- gineering and innovative financing, desali- nation plants are springing up everywhere. Utilizing ground-breaking technology, it is the lowest cost desalination system of its kind.
