This time lapse photography shows the growth of Magic Rocks, which are metal salts that resemble small rocks that grow into dainty towers when placed in a sodium silicate solution. A photo was taken once a minute for 12 hours. Warmer water produces quick-growing thin shapes, but may also result in bubbles forming on the container. Cooler solution produces thicker, slow growing forms. Magic Rocks are readily available in stores, but you can make your own. Visit me at chemistry.about.com to learn how!

Skylander Girl brings you a fun science experiment today! GROW SKYLANDERS TRAPTANIUM AT HOME! We now how powerful traptanium is, now you can be a Trap Master after you watch this video and complete the steps! :) THUMBS UP IF YOU LIKE THIS IDEA! ALUM can be found on Amazon.com and McCormick sells it in some grocery stores, you can check their website for more info on where it's sold (U.S. information, we don't know about other countries, sorry guys!) WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS: •Boil 1/4 cup of water and put into a glass jar (we used a little bit more) •Add (roughly) 4 tsp of alum, stirring constantly. Once all dissolved, add more until no more will dissolve. •The next day you will have a bunch of crystals on the bottom of your jar, dump the liquid alum mix carefully into a new jar while leaving the crystals untouched on the bottom of the glass. •Find the biggest and best looking "SEED" crystal, you'll use that to make the large one. •Tie a string around your "seed crystal" and the other around the middle of a pencil (tieing around the small can be difficult, just be careful not to squeeze too hard or you could break the small crystal. •Now, suspend the seed crystal tied to the pencil into the jar with your mix. Make sure it does not touch the sides or bottom and be sure it is fully submerged. •Cover the jar with a paper towel and watch the traptanium grow. Just make sure there are no other crystals growing on the bottom of your jar again, if so, remove them by carefully relocation the solution and pencil/crystal to a new jar and discarded the old jar with crystals on the bottom. Leaving them in could make your "large" crystal, not so large. •Note: if your crystal starts to dissolve at any time, remove from the solution and add some more alum. It just means there wasn't enough in your mix to encourage growth. ►Our Last Video: The Cookie Monster ditched me in Brocks Arena! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thoisoi2 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Thoisoi?ty=h Music: http://audiomicro.com Interesting chemical experiments: http://www.m.chemicum.com/ Hello everyone, in this video I'll show you how to grow a beautiful purple single crystal. For this we’ll need the following substances – potassium and chrome alum. To begin, let’s make a mixture of alum. To do this, take a glass and weight 100 gram of aluminum potassium sulfate and 12 grams of chromium potassium sulfate in it. Adding chrome alum will make the crystals violet. Then, pour 400 ml of a very hot water into the glass and stir until all the alum is dissolved. After it’s all dissolved, leave this glass for a few days to let the crystals form at the bottom. A day later pour the alum solution into another container. As you can see a lot of beautiful little fused together crystals were formed at the bottom of the glass. Now pick open the mass of the crystals and put them in a bowl. Choose from this mass the most beautiful and large crystal. This crystal will serve as a seed from which a large crystal will be grown in the future. The solution, which previously was merged can be now filtered but that is optional. Now tie the seed on a thin fishing line and hung it in a solution of alum on a pencil or a stick. Now we can only wait for the crystal to grow. Over time, water will evaporate from the solution and excess alum will form the crystal that is hanging onto the fishing line. After some time the crystal will begin to take a regular geometric shape that is defined by the crystal lattice of a substance. For alum it is octagonal or octahedron. Also, during the crystal growth excess crystals will grow as well on the bottom and the line of the glass, and they should be removed. Though it’s better to save these crystals as it is possible to prepare a solution and raise other crystals out of them in the future. Also, in single crystals growing it is important to avoid extremes of temperature and pollution of the solution. After 2 months my crystal become large enough and I decided that I can stop its growth. I pulled out the crystal from the solution and desiccated its surface with a napkin. Next I covered the crystal with colorless nail polish, one or two layers is usually enough. It is important to protect the crystal from further destruction. After the nail polish has been dried out it’s okay to take the crystals with bare hands. Crystal growing is very exciting activity that develops patience and mind. I raised two purple crystals. One is dark and the other one is more transparent and bright. Now, ladies and gentlemen, as we have done a long journey growing these crystals let's just enjoy their beautifulness without any further comments.

Our latest Dig! Discover and Display kit is not just for excavating crystals and rocks, it's for growing crystals, too! Each kit comes with two packets of mono-ammonium phosphate. Some packets of salt are dyed with food coloring to mimic crystals found in nature; however, each crystal structure is the same, forming tetragonal crystals. The dye actually washing off the crystals, so if you are not careful when removing the crystals, you might get dye on your hands or clothing, or it might mostly wash away if you run the crystals under water. It's also imperative that you follow the direction precisely or your crystals may not grow. Though we warmed our water to the correct temperature, it's possible some of our crystals didn't grow as spectacularly as the clear ones because by the time we worked on those crystals the water had cooled down and didn't adequately dissolve the crystal granules as thoroughly as the first batch. We also used glass jars and plastic beakers to grow our crystals rather than clear empty two-liter bottles as recommended in the directions. Our choices made it harder to see the crystals growing and harder to get the crystals out of the containers. In the end, the clear crystals seemed to grow the best, but the yellow ones were the thickest. The blue ones made a poor showing and the pink ones were pretty nice. Overall, we all enjoyed the whole process. Bismuth ingots can be purchased here (this is an affiliate link): http://ebay.to/1iwwqji Bismuth is non-toxic and has a number of very interesting properties. For best results I recommend using at least 4 or 5 pounds of bismuth for the surface crystallization method demonstrated in the video. The deeper the pool of bismuth is in the pan the better, because the crystals will have extra room to grow before they touch the bottom. The more you use the more impressive your results will be. Some of you that are familiar with other forms of crystal formation may be thinking I gave bad advice when I state in the video that you can move the crystals as they grow. Usual crystal growth requires a very still solution with no movement, and a very slow cool down period. I did quite a lot of experimenting with this method and found that bismuth does not behave quite the same way. Once the crystals have begun forming it does not seem to matter if they are moved so long as they remain submerged. Further structured growth happens regardless of disturbance once there is a point to nucleate from. You may also notice that I was not wearing gloves for a portion of the video, that was foolish of me. I was wearing eye protection the entire time. Leather gloves (not synthetic!) and lab goggles should always be worn in case of splashes or spills. If you would like to skip the process of making your own crystals, you can buy them already made here (another affiliate link): http://ebay.to/1BIvj2C Music: Minimal - Soundaround -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Check out my latest video: "How To View Invisible Air Currents With Lasers" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K94Cc21KEIA -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Hello everyone. Today we are going to grow beautiful crystals of sulfur. For this, we will need toluene and crystalline sulfur. Let’s take a flask and fill it with 10 grams of crushed sulfur. Then we will need to pour about 100ml of toluene into the flask and turn the stove on to heat up our mix. When it is heated, our sulfur starts to dissolve in toluene. Also, I have to tell you that this experiment should only be done in outdoors or inside a fume hood. After the mixture reaches 95 degrees Celsius, all the sulfur will completely dissolve in toluene. Now let’s leave the mixture to cool down. Upon reaching 55°C, yellow needle crystals of sulfur will begin to precipitate in the flask. Also, if the mixture is heated again, the crystals will dissolve and the experiment can be repeated one more time. I did this same project a while ago and it turned out awful, having received many tips on how to do it better via the comments people left me on youtube, I decided to try it again. Armed with the suggestions and a new rock growing kit here goes second attempt (third if you count the one I didn't film that turned out worse than the first video.) It turns out the only mistake I was making was using 70 degree celsius water instead of 70 degree fahrenheit water. Woot though, it worked. The music is more of the stuff I made on Garage Band.

We ordered this mystical garden in the mail and it was a lot of fun to do with my two kids ages 2 and 5. After we set it up and I started videoing it and told my kids not to touch it. As you can see by the video, they could not help but poke the crystals as they grew which explains the tiny hands showing up in the video. :)

Today we will grow some crystals, again. As in the previous video, I will try to describe the whole process of growing the crystals to you. First, we need to choose the material of which we will grow the crystal. Essentially, practically any substance is suitable for crystal growth. For example: protein crystals, crystals of iodine, metals crystals. Even air can be turned into a crystal when it is cooled to a certain temperature. For normal conditions, the best suited are inorganic salts. And for this time I will grow crystals of potassium alum. However, from personal experience, I would say that copper sulfate is the best substance for growing crystals at home. Table salt is not the best material. Bluestone is easier to buy and you will get beautiful blue crystals using it. To begin, let's take any vessel and pour there some of our salt. Next, pour hot water into the vessel and keep adding salt until it is no longer dissolvable. In this case, we get a saturated solution. Be sure to add hot water, to be safe with the proportions. Different salts have their own solubility curves. Solubility curve is a measure of how many grams of the salt can be dissolved in a 100 ml of water at a certain temperature. Also, for all of the salts the information is different. Once we have prepared our saturated salt solution, it has to be filtered while it is still hot. Filtering is not required. However, if you buy the chemicals in a garden shop, not in a special shop, the solution must be thoroughly cleaned from possible impurities. I would still recommend to initially use pure chemicals. After the filtration, let's leave our glass for a few days to let the crystals form. Crystals form as a result of the change in solubility of salts in the water when the temprature changes. Excess crystals, which cannot be dissolved in the solution, they fall to the bottom of the cup. After a day we may notice that beautiful crystals were formed at the bottom of the beaker. These crystals will be used as seeds. Seed is a small crystal that is immersed into the solution, which will continue to grow new layers of a crystal on top of it. Now let's merge the solution into another beaker. Next, choose the most beautiful and large crystal from the mass of crystals that were formed on the bottom of the cup, or the one that is easiest to tie on a thread. I could also advise here to use a thin fishing line instead of threads. Once we have tied a crystal to a beaker we pour our saturated solution of salt back there. You can tie a thread to a regular pencil and hung a crystal in a glass using it. However, for myself I've decided to use a system, in which the glass will be protected from dust. I think this is not necessary. At the moment we can only wait for the crystal to grow. Over the time of the growth of the crystal, it will become bigger and bigger. This occurs because the water from the solution will gradually evaporate, thereby increasing the concentration of the solution. Since we have a solubility curve, we can learn that the excess material that cannot be dissolved must go somewhere. And this is the substance that forms our single crystal. If we had not hung the seed, the crystals would have started to fall anywhere - on the bottom or on the walls of the beaker. And one more thing to mention! During the process of crystals growing, liquid from the cup will gradually evaporate, and therefore the crystals grow. But, that's also a problem. During the evaporation of liquid it comes to a certain time when there won't be enough solution in the cup anymore, and the further growth of the crystal will be impossible. To solve this, once a month or once in every two weeks it is necessary to add a saturated solution into the beaker. The saturated solution must be prepared the same way as it was before, by adding salt into a hot water. However, you should not add a warm solution. The saturated solution should be the same temperature as the growing crystal. Also, once a month or once every two weeks, I recommend filtering solution to maintain its cleanliness. Over time, in the solution some specks or other dirt might occur, which can screw up the crystal. Over time, my crystals from potassium alum become bigger. As you can see, they have acquired a very interesting form. And now, after about 3 months, I have grown two beautiful crystal of potassium alum.
