22 Years of Sea Surface Temperatures
The NOAA polar-orbiting satellites (POES) have been collecting sea surface temperature data for over 22 years. This animation is a compilation of that data from January 1985 - January 2007. Of note are the changes in the Gulf Stream, El Nino and La Nina cycles in the Pacific, and the seansonal changes in sea ice cover.

Atlantic and Pacific oceans joining at a point in mid ocean but do not mix each other | Unbelievable
On the temperature, salinity, and density differences between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans in the upper kilometre. Abstract The surface of the Pacific Ocean stands about 40 cm higher than the Atlantic Ocean with respect to the 1000-decibar surface, and the North Atlantic and North Pacific stand respectively about 14 and 17 cm higher than the South Atlantic and Pacific. The North Atlantic is warmest and saltiest, the South Atlantic is coldest and densest, and the North Pacific is least dense and least salty. The extreme values in temperature and salinity of the North Atlantic are probably related to the formation of the deep water there, which carries away from the upper layer the cold water of relatively low salinity. If this water spreads into the South Atlantic at depth and is replaced with warm saline surface water from the South Atlantic via the South Equatorial Current and the Gulf Stream, then the South Atlantic should be substantially cooler and less salty. The difference in density and sea level of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans may stem from the difference in latitude of the southern tips of America, Africa, and Australia, and the constriction of the west wind drift at Drake Strait. Only the densest surface waters of the Pacific pass through to the Atlantic, while lighter waters from lower latitudes of the South Atlantic pass eastward south of Africa. Further, the constriction of the flow by Drake Strait may result in a higher sea level on the Pacific side through the effect of Windstau (Montgomery, 1938). The density difference between the southern and northern oceans may be partly a consequence of the west wind drift around Antarctica. This is the greatest current of all oceans. Its flow is approximately geostrophically balanced and the surface slopes down to the south. The northern west wind drifts are not so strong, are at lower latitudes, and the high latitude flow is westward with slope upward to the north. These differences are not confined to the upper thousand metres. The average density difference between the Atlantic and the Pacific from the surface to the bottom is about 17 × 10−5 g/cm3. Referred to some deep surface such as 4000 decibars, the Pacific stands about 68 cm higher than the Atlantic.

Current Sea surface temps around NZ stand out on world map (04/12/17)
We kick off the first full week of December under more high pressure and mostly dry weather but this week has a few more twists than last week. We still see a few daytime downpours, again mainly around Central Plateau but a few also possible around Central Otago. However in coastal Otago a cooler breeze over Tuesday and Wednesday may drop daytime highs into the late teens while highs closer to 30 continue inland. Despite the brief early/mid week cooling phase for some coastal areas in the south most of New Zealand will remain hotter and drier than average this week - with even hotter weather possible at the end of the week ahead of some rain makers in the Tasman Sea - but these are likely to weaken as they move in, not bringing relief to all. But perhaps most importantly we take a look at sea surface temperatures and discover that the sea temperatures between New Zealand and Australia are a staggering 6 degrees above average. http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz

North Atlantic Ocean Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly Maps
Sea surface temperature varies due to solar heating and air-sea exchange of heat, as well as due to transport of warm waters and mixing with cooler, deeper waters. The animation shows the annual anomalies in sea surface temperature (C) in the North Atlantic, varying from -1.5C (blue) to +1.5C (red). The animation is broadly similar to the ocean heat content change, regions of higher sea surface temperature generally coinciding with greater ocean heat content, although there are detailed differences, particularly in the subtropical latitudes. Again there is strong decadal variability for the ocean gyres, as well as a recent surface warming for 2000 to 2010. The sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies are generally viewed as being driven by anomalies in air-sea fluxes on interannual timescales (greater heat input from the atmosphere leads to warmer SST), but might feedback back and determine the air-sea fluxes on decadal or longer timescales (a warmer SST leads to a greater loss of heat from the ocean to the atmosphere). There is also a physical transport of the SST anomalies on all timescales.

Sea Surface Height Maps from Radar Altimetry
Using data from several satellite altimeters, a finer picture of the ever-changing height of the oceans is revealed. Swirling currents called eddies pepper the global ocean. Like small pock-marks in sea surface height, these eddies are found in every major ocean basin. Near the Equator, the eddies give way to fast moving features called Kelvin Waves. When they build up in the Pacific, these waves can usher in a phenomenon known as El Nino, which happens when warm water and high sea levels move into the Eastern Pacific along the Equator. Occurring every 3 to 4 years, El Nino can have a big impact on weather across the globe, brining extra rainfall to the American Southwest and even affecting hurricanes in the Atlantic Oceans. Step # 1 -- Finding the Water Temperature Map The first step is going to be navigating to the government site that provides this information, this can be found at "www.nodc.noaa.gov/dsdt/cwtg". You will be presented with a map of the US broken down into states, with any states having the water temperature available having a color. Step # 2 -- Finding a Temperature Measurement Point To view the water temperature in a specific state click on it -- in this example we are clicking on Texas. A new page will load and you will see a Google Maps image with several markers on it. These markers represent points where there is a temperature recording being made and to view the temperature at this point simply click on the marker. When we do this a box with additional details will appear. Step # 3 -- Finding the Water Temperature These details tell you where the thermometer is located as well as the current temperature. The temperature is displayed in Fahrenheit, with the Celsius figure being displayed in brackets. You will be told when the reading was last made as well as an average reading for the month. This process can be repeated for finding water temperatures in all the states available on the overview map on the previous page.

Sea surface temperature in the Mediterranean (August 2018)
A new YouTube channel with information about sea surface temperature in the Mediterranean
NASA | The Ocean: A Driving Force for Weather and Climate
The Ocean is essential to life on Earth. Most of Earth's water is stored in the ocean. Although 40 percent of Earth's population lives within, or near coastal regions- the ocean impacts people everywhere. Without the ocean, our planet would be uninhabitable. This animation helps to convey the importance of Earth's oceanic processes as one component of Earth's interrelated systems. This animation uses Earth science data from a variety of sensors on NASA Earth observing satellites to measure physical oceanography parameters such as ocean currents, ocean winds, sea surface height and sea surface temperature. These measurements, in combination with atmospheric measurements such as surface air temperature, precipitation and clouds can help scientists understand the ocean's impact on weather and climate and what this means for life here on Earth. NASA satellites and their unique view from space are helping to unveil the vast... and largely unexplored.... OCEAN. NASA Earth Observing System Data and Information Systems (EOSDIS) EOSDIS is a distributed system of twelve data centers and science investigator processing systems. EOSDIS processes, archives, and distributes data from Earth observing satellites, field campaigns, airborne sensors, and related Earth science programs. These data enable the study of Earth from space to advance scientific understanding. Sea temperatures around Korean Peninsula rise by 2.89°C over 8 years: KMA
여름철 바다 수온 상승 최근 10년 새 가속화... 폭염 매년 심해질 수도 Sea temperature around the nation has been steadily rising in recent years. Other than dealing a blow to the local fishing industry the phenomenon may bring about other concerning changes. The weather agency warns it may cause worse heatwaves in the years to come. Seo Eun-kyung explains further. The seas surrounding the Korean Peninsula are getting warmer. According to a report from the Korean Meteorological Administration released Thursday, the average temperature in July stood at 21-point-36 degrees Celsius in 2010, but was 24-point-25 degrees Celsius during the same month this year. That's a rise of nearly 3 degrees Celsius. The weather agency says the average water temperature in July in the West Sea, the Southern Sea, and the East Sea surrounding the Korean peninsula has jumped by an average of zero-point-34 degrees Celsius per year since 2010. The weather agency anticipates that warmer seas around Korea could lead to a number of negative socio-economic effects, and also bring worse annual heat waves to the Korean Peninsula. "There are number of reasons... first of course, the fish catch will drop due to the rising temperatures and fish farms will suffer from this result. This will lead to a massive shutdown of fish farms." Prolonged heatwaves caused by climate change are one of the main reasons for the rising sea temperatures. Another reason for the warmer sea temperature is that the Korean Peninsula has been directly hit by typhoons in recent years, which has prevented the cold water deep below the sea's surface from mixing with the warm surface water. The meteorological agency says it will work with the South Korean government to try to minimize the impact of rising sea temperatures. Seo Eun-kyung, Arirang News. The mission of the In Situ Thematic Centre (INS TAC) is to provide integrated in situ products built from in situ observations acquired from outside CMEMS data providers to fit the needs of CMEMS internal and external users. It is a distributed centre composed of 6 regional centres working closely with the EuroGOOS ROOS (Regional Operational Observing System) and a Global centre well connected to the JCOMM networks (Joint WMO-IOC Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology). INS TAC also works closely with the SeaDataNet infrastructure that coordinates a network of European National Data Centres which archive observation data acquired within scientific campaign and EMODNet, which is a network of organisations supported by the EU’s integrated maritime policy. The in situ products are either assimilated in forecasting models by MFCs , used as ground truth for models from the Monitoring and Forecasting Centers (MFC) or Satellite Thematic Centre (TAC) product validation or provided to CMEMS users for Research and downstream activities.
Average Weekly Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies During El Niño
The animation shows the progression of sea surface temperatures anomalies (SSTas) during the 2015-16 El Niño event. Through a complex feedback, decreasing easterly winds along the equator during an El Nino create less upwelling of colder deeper ocean water and hence are associated with higher temperatures (red). The warmer temperatures affect the overlying air reducing the pressure of the air. This reenforces the the wind circulation changes and the temperature continues to increase. The change in the ocean temperatures impact convection (rain) in the tropics which in turn can impact the atmosphere away from the tropics towards mid-latitudes. 2008 Hurricane Season with Sea Surface Temperature
This animation depicts the 2008 hurricane season and the corresponding water temperature, for the dates 6/1/08 through 11/30/08. The colors on the ocean represent the sea surface temperatures, and satellite images of the storm clouds are laid over the temperatures to clearly show the positions of the storms. Hurricane winds are sustained by the heat energy of the warm surface waters of the ocean. As a hurricane passes over the warm surface it churns the water, drawing the deeper, cooler water to the surface. This mixing can appear in the animation as a blue pool trailing the hurricane. The sea surface temperature data was taken by the AMSR-E instrument on the Aqua satellite, while the cloud images were taken by the Imager on the GOES-12 satellite. How Earth Would Look If All The Ice Melted
We learned last year that many of the effects of climate change are irreversible. Sea levels have been rising at a greater rate year after year, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates they could rise by another meter or more by the end of this century. As National Geographic showed us in 2013, sea levels would rise by 216 feet if all the land ice on the planet were to melt. This would dramatically reshape the continents and drown many of the world's major cities. 17: Sea Surface Temperature
One of the amazing properties of water on Earth is that water has the highest heat capacity of just about any natural substance known. It takes months for the Atlantic waters to absorb the intense tropical sunlight, but during the process an amazing amount of energy is stored in the water. This energy makes its way into tropical storm clouds when water evaporates from the ocean surface. Water molecules are in essence "mobile solar collectors" that transfer the ocean's energy into clouds, where the energy can then power a hurricane.
