How is China’s garment industry dealing with rising labor costs?-20150131

East Meets West: 'Tmall China Day' at New York Fashion Week
Thanks to Alibaba, three Chinese designer labels made their runway debut at New York Fashion Week: The Shows.
Monday, 10 September 2018 - Chinese fashion designers are making their way onto the world stage thanks to Tmall, China’s premier online shopping destination, as they showcased local designers under the “Tmall China Day” banner at New York Fashion Week (NYFW) with “China Cool.” The show was part of Tmall’s efforts to cultivate homegrown fashion talent and the growing creative culture in China, creating a new meaning for the term “Made in China” and promoting the trend of “Designed in China.” The initiative aims to help Chinese brands expand globally, through designer-buyer matchmaking, e-commerce collaborations and showcases at fashion week events. CHINA COOL: “China Cool” was a celebration of the shift China is making from a manufacturing powerhouse, to a design and creativity powerhouse. Tmall presented these up-and-coming brands because they believe they are on the leading edge of what Chinese consumers, and increasingly global consumers, will want in the near future. CHINA FASHION BY THE NUMBERS: According to Tmall, the first China Day brands who participated in the February New York Fashion Week Menswear show reported sales gains following the event. Chinese designer Cheng Peng said it has doubled its global retail channels to more than 80 outlets, among which North American retailers have increased orders by more than 50%. Popular streetwear label Peace Bird and CLOT, founded by Hong Kong entrepreneur Kevin Poon and actor-musician Edison Chen, say their runway show prompted various collaboration invitations from Chinese and international fashion circles. Chinese sportswear giant Li Ning saw its stock soar by 50% in a single month after February China Day. FEATURED DESIGN COLLECTION “Unlimited” by JNBY Founded in 1994 by a team of 12 art and design students, the Chinese fashion brand JNBY initially got its inspiration from the look of club kids in the late 1980s and 90s. Espousing a modern DIY aesthetic, the brand aimed to make convertible clothes that would allow its wearers to interpret them per their personal style. The clothes soon developed a strong fanbase. JNBY operates over 700 stores around the world with the Seattle, WA (USA) store being the first official expansion of JNBY in the USA.

China Day e-Volution at 2018 New York Fashion Week!
February 2018: New York City: There was a retail “e-volution” at New York Fashion Week: Men’s! The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) together with Suntchi (Shanghai) Brand & Technology Co., Ltd and in association with Alibaba Group's Tmall hosted Tmall “China Day.” The purpose of China Day was to introduce leading Chinese designers to international markets, build their presence and ultimately develop their global distribution channels. With participating Chinese designers Li-Ning, Peacebird, Chenpeng, and CLOT - the runway shows were recorded and broadcast to millions of shoppers through the “See Now Buy Now” format. Most pieces that were launched by Tmall China Day designers were available on Tmall immediately following the show. Peacebird epitomizes the modern success story: dizzying growth and unrivalled popularity among the young. CLOT probably exercises the greatest influence on trends, and is China’s first homegrown street fashion label. Chenpeng is emblematic of the vanguard of young Chinese design: even though Chen is fresh out of The London College of Fashion, he has already left his mark on the international fashion community and has garnered a star-studded following. TMALL China Day was aimed at key influencers in the global fashion community, and is the first ever platform to focus on the promotion of Chinese brands abroad. A number of leading brands, such as Burberry and Tommy Hilfiger have already broken with convention and are using this new ‘See Now Buy Now’ retailing solution, that combines real-time online streaming with innovative retail channeling. This new retailing technology bolstered by strong data support will revolutionize the face of Fashion Week.

New Sales Mode Introduced at China Fashion Week in Beijing
The "buying at seeing" sales mode has been initially introduced at the ongoing China International Fashion Week held in Beijing from March 24 to April 1. The mode means consumers can buy these designs online by scanning the QR codes at the show or on the internet live-show platforms. "More consumers can buy. Previous off-line sales cost more and are geographically restricted. Good designers may not get known. In fact, the online sales can break through the time and geographical restrictions," said Ding Xia, director of the clothing business division of Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com Inc.. "Along with the e-commerce growth, we can use the quickest way to let the consumers buy our designs. These business opportunities are created by the progress of this era," said Zhang Qinghui, chairman of the China Association of Fashion Design. International new trend brands and domestic new fashion designers jointly launched three new design releases on Wednesday, which attracted lots of young audiences. Those designs are for people around 25 years old. Among them, the sport series embodied tailoring in a retro style and exquisite detail designs. The newly released dress series has combined morbidezza and robust style together to embody the vanguard of modern lady. http://www.cctvplus.com/news/20170331/8046773.shtml#!language=1 Subscribe us on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/CCTVPlus CCTV+ official website: http://www.cctvplus.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/cctv-news-content Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NewsContent.CCTVPLUS Twitter: https://twitter.com/CCTV_Plus

As many of you know, my primary line of business is Fashion design. I've been in this industry for about 13 years now. I am a current co-founder and co-owner of Vie-Riche Paris, as well as Design director at Maxima Apparel, Which houses my brand, Black Pyramid (Chris Brown's line) and also Hudson Outerwear. With that said, I recently took a work trip to China, where basically all of our development happens. People tend to take for granted the amount of work that goes behind a single garment, and I wanted to take a moment to highlight just that, with the help of a little bit of a behind the scenes video of my recent trip to China. Here's a typical breakdown of the usual process (Normal industry standard is 6-9 months....Our standard, 2-3 months, Tis why we are considered the Urban ZARA): To start off, our company is composed of about 140 employees between our NYC office and our China offices. Step 1: Concept & Design (My main role). Step 2: Design hand-off process. Once a design (or batch of designs) is approved, Us designers must break down the art (if any) on the garment, and provide our Technical design team with all details pertaining the art; a. A cad with art placement sized in the right proportion. Pantone numbers for every color in the art, and also suggested/intended form of embelishment. Step 3: Merchandising process for each and every style. This entails establishing which fabrics will be used, as well as form of embelishment (print, embroidery, patchwork, sublimation, etc.) and lastly which of our 10+ factories the specific style will be assigned to. Depending on the Step 4: Technical Design. Our Tech team will take every single style and create a multi-page breakdown for it. This is the blueprint of the garment. It details everything from fabric, to colors, to exact measurements for every single aspect of the item, as well as construction. Step 5: Our Tech Packs are then uploaded on to a server where we manually enter each style by style. On this system, every detail is also manually entered and here we assign pricing and a status log is created and followed through up until delivery of the product to our warehouse. Step 6: Sourcing for sampling. Our team in China dissects each and every item and goes out and sources our requested fabrics in specific colors/quality standards. They also source trims and any new kind of technique we request. You'll see some of this in my video below. Step 7: Sampling process. The factory creates a pattern, and using our Tech pack, they create our sample for each style. This sample is then sent out to us for inspection/commenting. Step 8: Sample review: We collaboratively review each sample and make comments on each one for our factories to implement for production. Sometimes we will request a rushed updated sample if the item requires a major change, which is typically delivered to us within a week or so. Step 9: Our samples are then handed to our sales team (One to two sales people in each region, including one Europe rep). The sales team spends the next 3-4 weeks going to stores and trade shows to collect pre-orders from all of our accounts as well as any potential new accounts. Step 10: We then asses our total pre-order sales numbers and create a 'buy' for each and every style, which we then submit to the factory for production. Our administrative team is responsible for manually entering each and every order into our system. Step 11: Production. You'll see some of this in my video. Industry standard: 90 days. Our standard: 7-30 days, depending on different variables. Step 12: Goods are inspected, packed and shipped to our warehouse in China. Step 13: Once the goods are ready to ship, our Admin team contacts each and every store that pre-ordered and confirms delivery of their order. Their order is then picked, packed and shipped directly from china to their store within 2 business days. Step 14: You, the consumer, buys it. Step 15: Repeat :) By the time this item goes on your body, it has been touched by over 100 people, and collectively, hundreds of hours have been put into the process. And thanks to our speed to market motto, we are also able to give you guys trend-relevant, innovative, high quality goods EVERY SINGLE MONTH, at a very reasonable price! It is why our three brands are preferred over all other brands in our sector. But don't take my word for it. Next time you are out at some nightclub or retail store, pay close attention to what people are wearing. I promise you that you will see our 3 brands more prominently than any other :) Thank you for taking the time to read this and appreciate the process. Hope you enjoyed and don't forget to share and subscribe to my Channel!

And now a frightening new craze for Western-style beauty is driving a nationwide boom in dangerous and drastic cosmetic surgery procedures. "Until recently, communist ideals valued natural beauty. Today, other things are considered beautiful", explains fashion photographer Zheng Chen. At just 19, young model Ai Xiao Qi has found success in China's fashion world. But she isn't under any illusions about the painful cause of her popularity: "when you're in front of cameras, your face must have a strong profile". A strong profile: the new Chinese euphemism for surgically-enhanced Western features. In a bid to be as tall as Westerners, Chinese girls are even undergoing gruesome procedures to break and extend their legs. After a botched surgery, tour guide Qi Lixia ended up horribly disfigured. "The doctors tried to re-assure me. But my nose was completely deformed." But such is the pressure on young girls that she's prepared to go under the knife again: "Looking good helps me in my job". As this mantra becomes more widely accepted, the message to young girls is clear: it's what's on the outside that counts. Cantonese/Nat Western fashion trends have invaded southern China. But its not just women's clothes that are changing with the seasons. In Guangzhou, the latest craze is wearing wigs. Women walk down the streets of Guangzhou. But is their hair their own? Yes, a wig craze has hit China. In this store in Guangzhou, for as little as 10 U-S dollars, women can purchase a wig in any style they like. Wig stores are packed with young girls eager to try on different hair styles without spending too much money. SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese) It's popular now. China Fashion Week Highlights Children's Wear
Child models professionally presented children's wear collection by designer Sun Haitao at the China Fashion Week in Beijing on Wednesday. Of them, the youngest was only three years old, while the oldest one 12 years old. On the stage, the little models were very calm and poised, waving hands or making poses just as if they were grow-up professionals. For them, the show was not just about performance, but was for fun and to kill their curiosity. "We are very happy. I feel very confident on this stage, and it gives me a strong sense to make myself more handsome," said one of the child models. From their faces, it could tell that some of them were kind of shy with a solemn look, some confident with smile and poses, and some even forgot to leave the stage because of nervousness. Although different conditions occurred, these child models won repeated bursts of applause. "I think they are very cute with no fear, and they performed very natural on the stage with enthusiasm. So I think this is quite good and makes me amazed," said one of the audience. Traditional Chinese culture was highlighted in the collection. "I think our designers paid quite little attention to the children's wear previously. As a designer, I should carry on and develop traditional Chinese culture. To bring forth new ideas, and return to traditional culture, and then to carry forward them," Sun Haitao said. China Beauty Charity Fund's China Fashion Night Gala on September 6 2013 in New York City
China Beauty Charity Fund ("CBCF") celebrated its inaugural China Fashion Night Gala on September 6, 2013 at the Pierre Hotel in New York City. Hosted by CBCF Founder and Chairwoman Yue-Sai Kan, with actor Archie Kao and Miss Universe Olivia Culpo as Master and Mistress of Ceremonies, the gala benefitted the CBCF Scholarship at the Fashion Institute of Technology ("FIT"). "Some of the world's most successful Chinese artists today, such as Tan Dun, Lang Lang, Cai Guo-Qiang, Zhang Huan and many more have all studied or worked in NYC and have benefited tremendously from this experience which has helped to shape their distinguished careers. I wish to do the same for talented Chinese individuals in fashion by giving them that same opportunity to advance and achieve great success" remarked Yue-Sai Kan. Sharing CBCF's vision, fashion pioneer Vivienne Tam was honored for her dedication to supporting women's empowerment and providing opportunities to emerging talent from China. A friend of Tam and Kan, Petra Nemcova presented the award, in a stunning Vivienne Tam tomato faille dress. The highlight of the gala was the fashion presentation and runway show by China's preeminent haute couture designer, Guo Pei, whose exquisite creations were showcased for the very first time in the US. Guo presented acclaimed pieces from her "Legend of the Dragon" collection, including a gown inspired by stained glass domes of European churches and a gown adorned with several thousand "Gong Hua", silk flowers made exclusively for the royal palace and were rescued from the storage room of a deserted factory and carefully restored with steam -- which took nearly 50,000 hours. As a celebration of artistry in all forms, the Gala featured a special performance by renowned Chinese American Metropolitan Opera singer Hao Jiang Tian and his I Sing Beijing Ensemble along with a live auction that included a work of artist Cai Guo-Qiang and Sennheiser to an audience that included: Trudie Styler, Bebe Neuwirth, Victor Alfaro, Lisa Airan, Geoffrey Bradfield, Cheryl Casone, Veronica Chou, Melvin Chua, Evie Evangelou, Cecelia Dean, Mira Duma, Anh Duong, Hofit Golan, General Consul Sun Guoxiang, Stacy Engman, Susan Gutfreund, Du Juan, James Kaliardos, Karolina Kurkova, Anne McNally, Julie Macklowe, Carlos Mota, Petra Nemcova, Carmen dell'Orefice, HRH The Princess of Udaipur Padmaja Kumari Parmar, Guo Pei, Jean Shafiroff, Susan Shin, Tadashi Shoji, Franca Sozzani, Dr. Valerie Steele, Amy Tan, Hao Jiang Tian, Vivienne Tam, Ling Tan, Zang Toi, Kaity Tong, Liu Wen, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, Ambassadors from China, Hungary, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Tunisia, and other notable guests from the realms of fashion, art, design, film, music, business and politics.

The Future of Fashion Design in China
In the past 30 years, China has been a major garment manufacturer, producing clothes for big brands overseas for very low margins. Now in China, the clothing industry is experiencing a transformation. “Made in China” is gradually being upgraded to “Designed in China.” For modern-day Chinese designers, this presents an opportunity as well as a challenge. Han Xiao, a young designer, started his career at a small workshop. He is working hard to fulfill his dream—“Designed in China.” Thumbnail Template by Thumb Temps: http://thumbtemps.com/license/

Edible Fashion Features in China Chocolate Wonderland
For more news and videos visit ➡ ‪http://english.ntdtv.com‬ Follow us on Twitter ➡ ‪http://twitter.com/NTDTelevision‬ Add us on Facebook ➡ ‪http://on.fb.me/s5KV2C‬ Shanghai is hosting a one-of-a-kind fashion show. Models clad in chocolate wow the audience in China's new chocolate wonderland theme park. Let's take a look. Shanghai kicked-off a chocolate fashion show on Friday. Models wore fancy chocolate accessories ranging from hats and shoulder ornaments. Chocolate is not particularly fabric-friendly, but some designers found a way around it. [Lin Guodong, Fashion Designer]: "Chocolate can be crispy, it's not very malleable nor can you easily shape it. This time the craftsmen added special ingredients so it could be easily shaped. It was more practical for us. So you can see that it's soft and sticks to the fabric. It's versatile. There's chocolate on the ornament, hat and the dress." The extravagant, edible clothes may look clumsy at times, but one model felt good in it. [Zhang Yiting, Model]: "The clothes made with chocolate are actually the same as normal clothes. The weather is cold, so the chocolate does not melt. Besides it has been specially treated. It's beautiful." The Shanghai World Chocolate Dream Park will feature cocoa terracotta and Chinese landmarks. It is open until mid-February.
