Fast fashion: for an e-commerce model in China, 150 outfits in 13 hours is a day’s work Cui Yue, known professionally as Pin’er, models clothes for online retailers selling their goods on the Chinese e-commerce behemoth Taobao. Because Taobao models are valued for their ability to drive sales, with the website tracking each product, the approach to modelling favours volume and efficiency. Donning between 100 and 200 outfits a day (and more than 200,000 in her career, she estimates), Yue tries to capture the spirit of each outfit in a matter of seconds, shifting her poses in rapid-fire sequences before slipping into the next look. Mostly shot on the street, with the briefest of pauses for water and food, it’s hectic and decidedly unglamorous work, but for models such as Yue it can be lucrative – at least for a time. As many of you know, my primary line of business is Fashion design. I've been in this industry for about 13 years now. I am a current co-founder and co-owner of Vie-Riche Paris, as well as Design director at Maxima Apparel, Which houses my brand, Black Pyramid (Chris Brown's line) and also Hudson Outerwear. With that said, I recently took a work trip to China, where basically all of our development happens. People tend to take for granted the amount of work that goes behind a single garment, and I wanted to take a moment to highlight just that, with the help of a little bit of a behind the scenes video of my recent trip to China. Here's a typical breakdown of the usual process (Normal industry standard is 6-9 months....Our standard, 2-3 months, Tis why we are considered the Urban ZARA): To start off, our company is composed of about 140 employees between our NYC office and our China offices. Step 1: Concept & Design (My main role). Step 2: Design hand-off process. Once a design (or batch of designs) is approved, Us designers must break down the art (if any) on the garment, and provide our Technical design team with all details pertaining the art; a. A cad with art placement sized in the right proportion. Pantone numbers for every color in the art, and also suggested/intended form of embelishment. Step 3: Merchandising process for each and every style. This entails establishing which fabrics will be used, as well as form of embelishment (print, embroidery, patchwork, sublimation, etc.) and lastly which of our 10+ factories the specific style will be assigned to. Depending on the Step 4: Technical Design. Our Tech team will take every single style and create a multi-page breakdown for it. This is the blueprint of the garment. It details everything from fabric, to colors, to exact measurements for every single aspect of the item, as well as construction. Step 5: Our Tech Packs are then uploaded on to a server where we manually enter each style by style. On this system, every detail is also manually entered and here we assign pricing and a status log is created and followed through up until delivery of the product to our warehouse. Step 6: Sourcing for sampling. Our team in China dissects each and every item and goes out and sources our requested fabrics in specific colors/quality standards. They also source trims and any new kind of technique we request. You'll see some of this in my video below. Step 7: Sampling process. The factory creates a pattern, and using our Tech pack, they create our sample for each style. This sample is then sent out to us for inspection/commenting. Step 8: Sample review: We collaboratively review each sample and make comments on each one for our factories to implement for production. Sometimes we will request a rushed updated sample if the item requires a major change, which is typically delivered to us within a week or so. Step 9: Our samples are then handed to our sales team (One to two sales people in each region, including one Europe rep). The sales team spends the next 3-4 weeks going to stores and trade shows to collect pre-orders from all of our accounts as well as any potential new accounts. Step 10: We then asses our total pre-order sales numbers and create a 'buy' for each and every style, which we then submit to the factory for production. Our administrative team is responsible for manually entering each and every order into our system. Step 11: Production. You'll see some of this in my video. Industry standard: 90 days. Our standard: 7-30 days, depending on different variables. Step 12: Goods are inspected, packed and shipped to our warehouse in China. Step 13: Once the goods are ready to ship, our Admin team contacts each and every store that pre-ordered and confirms delivery of their order. Their order is then picked, packed and shipped directly from china to their store within 2 business days. Step 14: You, the consumer, buys it. Step 15: Repeat :) By the time this item goes on your body, it has been touched by over 100 people, and collectively, hundreds of hours have been put into the process. And thanks to our speed to market motto, we are also able to give you guys trend-relevant, innovative, high quality goods EVERY SINGLE MONTH, at a very reasonable price! It is why our three brands are preferred over all other brands in our sector. But don't take my word for it. Next time you are out at some nightclub or retail store, pay close attention to what people are wearing. February 2018: New York City: There was a retail “e-volution” at New York Fashion Week: Men’s! The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) together with Suntchi (Shanghai) Brand & Technology Co., Ltd and in association with Alibaba Group's Tmall hosted Tmall “China Day.” The purpose of China Day was to introduce leading Chinese designers to international markets, build their presence and ultimately develop their global distribution channels. With participating Chinese designers Li-Ning, Peacebird, Chenpeng, and CLOT - the runway shows were recorded and broadcast to millions of shoppers through the “See Now Buy Now” format. Most pieces that were launched by Tmall China Day designers were available on Tmall immediately following the show. Peacebird epitomizes the modern success story: dizzying growth and unrivalled popularity among the young. CLOT probably exercises the greatest influence on trends, and is China’s first homegrown street fashion label. Chenpeng is emblematic of the vanguard of young Chinese design: even though Chen is fresh out of The London College of Fashion, he has already left his mark on the international fashion community and has garnered a star-studded following. TMALL China Day was aimed at key influencers in the global fashion community, and is the first ever platform to focus on the promotion of Chinese brands abroad. A number of leading brands, such as Burberry and Tommy Hilfiger have already broken with convention and are using this new ‘See Now Buy Now’ retailing solution, that combines real-time online streaming with innovative retail channeling. This new retailing technology bolstered by strong data support will revolutionize the face of Fashion Week.

Chinese tech giant Alibaba has accomplished what most other online retailers can only dream of: it’s integrated online shopping with brick-and-mortar stores. The company owns some of the world’s largest online marketplaces, all while running one of the two mobile payment systems that have all but replaced cash. All of this means that Alibaba has amassed a trove of personal data on millions of consumers, and so far, the customers don’t seem to mind, even as Alibaba’s reach grows. The conglomerate plans on rolling out 100 of these supermarkets by the end of the year. The "buying at seeing" sales mode has been initially introduced at the ongoing China International Fashion Week held in Beijing from March 24 to April 1. The mode means consumers can buy these designs online by scanning the QR codes at the show or on the internet live-show platforms. "More consumers can buy. Previous off-line sales cost more and are geographically restricted. Good designers may not get known. In fact, the online sales can break through the time and geographical restrictions," said Ding Xia, director of the clothing business division of Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com Inc.. "Along with the e-commerce growth, we can use the quickest way to let the consumers buy our designs. China Fashion Week Highlights Children's Wear
Child models professionally presented children's wear collection by designer Sun Haitao at the China Fashion Week in Beijing on Wednesday. Of them, the youngest was only three years old, while the oldest one 12 years old. On the stage, the little models were very calm and poised, waving hands or making poses just as if they were grow-up professionals. For them, the show was not just about performance, but was for fun and to kill their curiosity. "We are very happy. I feel very confident on this stage, and it gives me a strong sense to make myself more handsome," said one of the child models. From their faces, it could tell that some of them were kind of shy with a solemn look, some confident with smile and poses, and some even forgot to leave the stage because of nervousness. Although different conditions occurred, these child models won repeated bursts of applause. "I think they are very cute with no fear, and they performed very natural on the stage with enthusiasm. So I think this is quite good and makes me amazed," said one of the audience. Traditional Chinese culture was highlighted in the collection. "I think our designers paid quite little attention to the children's wear previously. As a designer, I should carry on and develop traditional Chinese culture. After the sun sets in Putian, thousands of bikes carrying fake sneakers hit the streets. The lace-up black market is no secret in Putian, and it's where you can find Chan, a vendor with a knack for getting high-quality pairs off the streets and into the hands of hypebeasts on the other side of the globe. With rubber, he struck gold. "I've spoken to some of our customers some of them are high school students some are college students university students. So yeah these are our main crowd you generally," Chan told VICE News. "It's usually the kids themselves were very resourceful. They understand about replicas they understand that these are high-quality sneakers and they come finding you saying, hey I'd like to buy some high-quality replicas from you." And while vendors are subject to police raids and potential lawsuits, Chan has been able to stay afloat. These days, the only thing slowing his business down is nitpicky sneakerheads. "Unfortunately, it's just the hard and fast rules of doing business. You meet difficult customers. You'll meet cheaters, you meet scammers who will be out there to cheat you off a pair of shoes," Chan said. "So, unfortunately, this kind of thing happens, especially when you're on a public domain like the Internet." VICE News met up with Chan at his headquarters to see how his business is racing ahead.
