Henry Robinson Luce (April 3, 1898 – February 28, 1967), was a Chinese-American magazine magnate, who was called "the most influential private citizen in the America of his day". Time summarized and interpreted the week's news; Life was a picture magazine of politics, culture, and society that dominated American visual perceptions in the era before television; Fortune explored in depth the economy and the world of business, introducing to executives avant-garde ideas such as Keynesianism; and Sports Illustrated explored the motivations and strategies of sports teams and key players. Counting his radio projects and newsreels, Luce created the first multimedia corporation. He was born in China to missionary parents. He envisaged that the United States would achieve world hegemony, and, in 1941, he declared the 20th century would be the "American Century". Nightly discussions of the concept of a news magazine led Luce and Hadden, both age 23, to quit their jobs in 1922. Later that same year, they formed Time Inc. Having raised $86,000 of a $100,000 goal, they published the first issue of Time on March 3, 1923. Luce served as business manager while Hadden was editor-in-chief. Luce and Hadden annually alternated year-to-year the titles of president and secretary-treasurer. In 1925, Luce decided to move headquarters to Cleveland, while Hadden was on a trip to Europe. Cleveland was cheaper, and Luce’s first wife, Lila, wanted out of New York. When Hadden returned, he was horrified and moved Time back to New York. Upon Hadden's sudden death in 1929, Luce assumed Hadden's position. Luce launched the business magazine Fortune in February 1930 and acquired Life in order to relaunch it as a weekly magazine of photojournalism in November 1936; he went on to launch House & Home in 1952 and Sports Illustrated in 1954. He also produced The March of Time weekly newsreel. By the mid 1960s, Time Inc. was the largest and most prestigious magazine publisher in the world. (Dwight Macdonald, a Fortune staffer during the 1930s, referred to him as "Il Luce", a play on the Italian Dictator Mussolini, who was called "Il Duce").) President Franklin D. Roosevelt, aware that most publishers were opposed to him, issued a decree in 1943 that blocked all publishers and media executives from visits to combat areas; he put General George Marshall in charge of enforcement. The main target was Luce, who had long opposed FDR. Historian Alan Brinkley argued the move was "badly mistaken", for had Luce been allowed to travel, he would have been an enthusiastic cheerleader for American forces around the globe. But stranded in New York City, Luce's frustration and anger expressed itself in hard-edged partisanship.[4] Luce, supported by Editor-in-Chief T. S. Matthews, appointed Whittaker Chambers as acting Foreign News editor in 1944, despite the feuds Chambers had with reporters in the field.[5] Luce, who remained editor-in-chief of all his publications until 1964, maintained a position as an influential member of the Republican Party.[6] An instrumental figure behind the so-called "China Lobby", he played a large role in steering American foreign policy and popular sentiment in favor of Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek and his wife Soong Mei-ling in their war against the Japanese. Over the past decade the way we consume media has changed drastically. The printing press changed the world and now the internet is doing so as well. The internet has given us access to every kind of information we can think of at our fingertips. Before we were dependent on print media or the news to inform us. Now we have an abundance of sources we can get news from. The is both a blessing and a curse. The decline of quality journalism is growing at a rapid pace. When everyone can call themselves a journalist and post their opinions on their blogs or youtube channels then the market becomes saturated. We are in a dire need of quality journalism. Our feeds have been consumed by garbage. Article like “22 Way Too Real Situations That Are Best Explained By “SpongeBob” Memes” and “These Teens Put 56 Boxes Of Mac And Cheese Into A Bath And People Have Some Thoughts”. We have divulged the internet into a landmine of clickbait. Even mainstream new stations like CNN and Fox News have turned into clickbait for the left or right. Everyone one on the internet wants something for free. We download movies for free and have adblocker so we don’t have to wait another second to see a youtube video. And were getting what we're paying for. The newspaper industry has seen a decline or over 65% since the year 2000. Old news companies have had trouble keeping up to date with the rise of the internet. They’ve tried to adapt and turn their business online with some success. The use of adblocker and lack of audience retention has caused some trouble for traditional media. Journalism need to be held to a higher standard and facts need to be definite. Were heading in the right direction though millennials paying for new subscriptions is on the rise. New sites need to be able to keep their audience reading and they need to adapt to how people are consuming media. Long and jargon filled articles need to become a thing of the past. The reason that people don’t want to pay for content online is because it’s boring. Were in the age that everything is at our fingertips and we want things fast. Youtube videos can get millions of views in a few hours while CNN and Fox struggle to get 2 million during prime time. Physical media is also on the decline. Nobody reads the physical newspaper or magazine. It’s just quicker and easier to read it online. Many magazines and newspapers now have subscription services that give you access to the online features as well as a physical copy. Over the past few months I have been consuming some media away from a screen and I think it has real benefits. Reading off a computer monitor or phone screen is the the easiest on the eyes. Especially after staring at it all day at work. Getting a break from your phone and computer has made focusing on the thing I’m reading much easier. Reading the newspaper everyday has helped me read things that I other wise wouldn’t have looked up online. 1 dollar a day somebody delivers quality news to my door everyday. When you think of the cost vs benefit it makes sense. I’ve also started to read magazines on hard copy. Weekly I get the Economist, Time and Bloomberg Business delivered. It’s relaxing to get away from your computer screen and not get distracted. You can focus on what you’re reading. It doesn't matter what you’re interested in, you can find great news article about it you just might have to be willing to pay for it. The way we consume media has been changing since the printing press. I feel that we are bombard with garbage nowadays but sifting through the rubble anyone can find quality journalism about something they're interested in. Think about whitelisting your favorite news sites or even paying for a subscription. I’m not saying that everyone should get a subscription to a newspaper and sit on the bus reading it everyday. I just want people to think before they click. And maybe consider paying for the news. Journalism need to be based on facts as well as it need to be able to keep up with the fast changing digital landscape we know today. BEYOND THE BOX Alex Jones gives the keynote speech at the Talkers Magazine New Media Seminar, held in New York City and attended by prominent media personalities as well as other industry movers and shakers. Introducing the speech, fellow talk radio host Lionel explains how Alex has seized every broadcast medium possible and used it as a platform for the Infowar, including the legendary Google bomb, which prompted Google to change their whole algorithm process in a bid to stop Alex from making certain topics go viral through the power of his listeners. Lionel humorously emphasizes how people like Alex are pivotal in keeping alive the format of spoken word in an environment where millions of You Tube users with minuscule attention spans have little other interest than watching clips of a "a duck playing a piano". Alex Jones then commences his speech by discussing the how the landscape of communications is being transformed right now as the powers that be attempt to seize control of the Internet and strangle all alternative voices as a quickening towards technological singularity advances. However, with the establishment now so discredited and untrustworthy, Alex explains how their attacks are actually having blowback and making people turn to the alternative media to an even greater extent. Alex addresses the assault on the First Amendment, down to the level of other major talk show hosts who publicly announced their refusal to attend the Talkers conference simply because Alex would be speaking, and passionately argues how free speech - a rare commodity in much of the world - is treated like toilet paper by a lot of Americans who believe themselves to be part of the crony establishment. Alex then unveils the basic truth behind the growing popularity of his message - talk about real issues and do so from a position of honesty and veritas - ignore temptations to join the system and just become a parroter of the controlled consensus and the managed paradigm - become a maverick, look at issues from different perspectives and never follow the herd. Most of our readers are fully cognizant of this, but for a lot of the individuals in the Talkers audience listening to Alex's speech, this would have been something of a revelation. Alex catalogues the history of how he rose from Access TV to local radio to the global phenomenon, thanks to the fantastic support of our Infowarriors, that his platform has become today, explaining how he went from editing tapes on old 1970's-style decks in the mid-90's to the high-tech approach that dominates in 2011. Our approach to news and how we are able to take issues and make them go viral by simply putting a new headline and a new angle on stories is also discussed. Alex finishes up by warning his peers how the government plans to launch a takeover of communication systems with emergency overrides and government text alerts, eventually forcing station owners to carry hours of government news in return for payment just to get by as we enter an economic depression. It was in 1933 that Newsweek magazine got its start pitted against Henry Luce's Time --and its virulent anti-New Deal politics. This week Newsweek's owner, The Washington Post Company, put it on the block, its ink turned to red and its fiscal outlook poor. A thirst for diverse news and opinion not available in the era of concentration of media outlets drove Newsweek to the brink, combined with an ever-increasing need for Big Profits from Big Media, now coming down even as CEO's pay keeps going up. In its place -- a diverse menu of reporting and opinion on the Web, satellite, and public access. We here at GRITtv are part of that new media. For Wall Street, where a jobless recovery is just fine, a shrinking media is similarly okay. What matters is sky high profits, low taxes and minimal regulation. Widgets or words or, better, the wonders of computerized futures trading, it all comes down to return on investment. But Big Media with its big budgets did send reporters to far off spots -- and paid their expenses -- There is no substitute for first hand observation in the streets, an original take on just-released government data and investigation backed by real bucks - and lawyers. That requires resources and a way to support "seeing it first hand" is one of the most critical issues our society faces. Noam Chomsky was recently interviewed by Swagat Baruah, Founder and Managing Editor of Catharsis Magazine. Chomsky addresses his propaganda model in light of social media and calls the centralisation of access of information towards Facebook "extremely dangerous" . Q: Very recently the UN’s fact-finding mission in Myanmar, headed by Marzuki Darusman, declared that social media had “substantively contributed to the level of acrimony, dissention and conflict” in Myanmar. Now, in your 2015 interview with Byline, you said, “I don’t look at Twitter because it doesn’t tell me anything.” However, a recent research that came out in August 2017 by the Pew Research Centre found that around 67% of Americans use social media for news, and this number is most probably increasing all around the world, as we speak. This just goes on to prove that people are increasingly relying on social media for news. What is your take on that, with regard to your propaganda model?
