History of the Fender Precision Bass | CME Vintage Bass Guitar Demo

11:08
http://bit.ly/2rcskna Our resident bass aficionado Marc takes on a phenomenal tour of the creation and evolution of the venerable Fender "P Bass." From the instrument's notable transition years to the latest and greatest standout models, no bass has stood the test of time or affected the trajectory of music—from rock 'n' roll to r&b and more—like this one. Take a listen to some of our favorite models and the songs that inspired us. 1951-1954 Orginal slab body, meaty neck profile, pressed carbon bridge saddles and vintage-style single-coil pickup. 1954-1957 Saddles switch from pressed fiber to metal. Introduction of contoured "belly cut." Neck profile evolves to vintage "V" shape. 1957-1959 Pickup changes to "split-coil" design. Anodized gold pickguard introduced. 1960-1965 Slab rosewood introduced (late ’59)—switch to veneer rosewood board (1962). 1972-1983 Nut width becomes smaller. Position of thumb rest moves. Early ’80s-1984 Fender returns "back to basics" to core vintage-inspired features such as slab fingerboard, vintage pickup covers, etc. 1986-2016 Fender introduces the American Standard—the flagship of the Fender P Bass line—which evolved over time to accommodate the playing styles of modern bassists. 2017 Fender debuts the next evolution of the American Standard—the American Professional Series. $65 eBay DIY P Bass kit unboxing, build, and review...SHOCKING!!!

Like my shirt? Get one here: www.GunsandGuitars.net Support me on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/DanThompson Instagram: @Guns.and.Guitars This is the unboxing building and review of a diy p bass kit you can get on eBay for around $65: eBay no longer has these at a good price, and people have complained about the sellers, so here is an Amazon link instead: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FHQ2G3A/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B01FHQ2G3A&linkCode=as2&tag=gunsandguit0a-20&linkId=a280f81fa9aa65b65b0360f0e210d4ac Or you can buy from The Fret Wire, use coupon code GUNSNGTRS to save $10: http://shrsl.com/13tyh Much like the strat kit I reviewed last time, this p bass is clearly made in China, though it shipped from a US warehouse in California, so again, I got it in just 3 days. This basswood p bass kit looks a little nicer than the strat kit. It has a decent wood grain in the body and neck, although there is a hideous wood filler spot on the back. If you're looking to make a beautiful looking instrument, it's probably best to start elsewhere. The hardware is good enough, it gets the job done, and the pickguard is prewired so there is no soldering required. But again, like the strat kit, there were no instructions or pilot holes drilled, so putting it together took some guess and check. All in all, this kit only took about an hour and a half to build, including an error i made installing the bridge. Yes, I measured, I just didn't measure correctly (*slaps forehead). I realized three not so great things about this kit when putting it together, 1) it was missing a bridge screw, 2) there isn't any hole drilled for the bridge ground connect. So you can see, temporarily I had the just run it straight to the bridge for this demo. And 3) the pickup poles don't line up with the strings, so the pickguard slots weren't milled out in the correct spots. Let's hear how it sounds: All I can say is wow! I'm shocked. This thing actually sounds and plays really well. Even the kit strings play and sound great. This kit is Far better than the strat I built, and way far better than I expected for $65. So to summarize: Things that are good: No soldering required Good wood grain on neck and body Straight neck with fairly level frets Pickup sounds great For $65 and an hour and a half build time you get a fairly decent instrument Things that suck: Big wood filler spot on the back Missing a screw Missing hole for bridge ground wire Pickup not aligned with strings Despite these flaws, I'm gonna go ahead and say this kit is g2g! Just slap a finish on this kit and you actually have a half decent bass for $65. I know, I don't believe it either. And no I'm not getting paid by the manufacturer to say that. I'm just as skeptical as you are right now. I'm guessing these kits are hit and miss. Maybe I was just lucky and got a good playing neck and a great sounding pickup. Maybe I was just unlucky and was missing a screw and hole for the bridge ground wire. Either way, for $65 I'm really impressed. ...continue reading on my blog at https://gunsandguitars.net (disclosure: links in this description may be affiliate links)

Review Demo - La Bella Olinto P/J Bass

06:04
Read the review: http://bit.ly/OlintoPJ Why would a reputable string company like La Bella jump into the crowded sea of bass production? The Mari family has been manufacturing strings for well over 350 years, and they’ve tested their products on a lot of instruments. Their electric bass strings—particularly their flatwounds—are many a player’s partner for P-style instruments. Enter the new Olinto PJ bass. It represents both La Bella’s familiarity with the Precision and the ingenuity of luthier Mas Hino. The Olinto PJ is influenced by Fender’s famous 1963 design. The body is alder, and our tester was coated in a dark, Lake Placid blue finish protected by nitrocellulose lacquer. The complex color frames the gold pickguard beautifully. It’s an eye-catching combination. Traditional P-bass bodies block access to the truss rod, and the neck bolts must be loosened to make adjustments. But here, lifting the pickguard reveals a small body cavity for truss-rod access. This is a thoughtful solution, though you must still remove the pickguard. The hand-carved, flat-sawn maple neck is coated in nitro lacquer. A Madagascar rosewood fretboard provides classic looks and an environmentally friendly alternative to Brazilian rosewood. The classic motif continues with a C-shaped neck and a period-correct 7.25" radius. Other features include a 1.625" bone nut, 20 vintage-style frets, a Hipshot Vintage bridge, and Hipshot HB3 reverse tuners. The Aguilar AG 4P/J-HC pickups are hum-cancelling. They provide familiar timbres, but are free of 60-cycle hum. To continue reading the review, visit: http://bit.ly/OlintoPJ

The James Jamerson Motown Bass Sound | Reverb Bass Tricks

06:55
It is hard to speak of the bass guitar without mentioning the Motown recordings of the 1960's and 70's and their most famous session bassist, James Jamerson. Jamerson played on dozens of number 1 hits and changed the way bass was applied to pop music forever. In this edition of Reverb's Bass Tricks series we explore how to replicate Jamerson's infamous thumpy tone. First there is the ACME Motown D.I. WB-3 (http://bit.ly/2cOJ4KA) which was designed to closely replicate the D.I. units Motown had specially made. Then there is how to set up a Fender P-Bass to Jamerson's specifications. Lastly, there is the picking method that completes the picture. Read more about James Jamerson's tone and the gear used in this video at http://bit.ly/2dwevtG. 51-P Bass DIY kit review and demo BK-008 from bargainmusician.com

But if you look a little closer, you’ll see why: It’s a lot different from other P-bass kits, in that it has some very unique styling. It’s built more like the original ’51 P-bass, but instead of the single coil pickup, it has a musicman style humbucker. It also features a maple fretboard, and a beautiful pearloid pickguard. Looking closely at the basswood it has a much better wood grain than any basswood kit I’ve built, and even has some flaming in some areas. Like other kits, this one does have a small wood filler spot, but it was done much better than the cheaper kits. It’s hardly noticeable as is, and under a stain will probably disappear completely. The routing in the body is clean, and this kit does have a hole drilled for the bridge ground wire connection (PRAISE THE LORD). The neck and fretboard both feature excellent woodgrain as well, so unlike that cheap eBay bass kit, you can actually make a beautiful instrument out of this thing. The headstock is preshaped, which may be good or bad depending on what you’re after. Personally, I like blank paddle headstocks so that I can cut it however I want, and again, personally, I feel this shape is pretty ugly. But I think I’ll still be able to save it with some careful custom work later… Also looking at the neck I noticed right off the bat that the frets have already been leveled and crowned. Not the prettiest job I’ve seen, but if you don’t have the tools or skills to level and crown frets yourself, this saves you a lot of time and money. The hardware seems to be of better quality as well. Still not high end hardware by any means, but I especially noticed that tuners are much better quality than I’ve seen on my other kits. The electronics are sort of prewired, the pickup and output jack do not come connected, so soldering is required. Looking closer at the electronics, the color coding was funky and inconsistent. For example, the hot and ground connections kept changing colors throughout the wiring. Depending on where it was connected, the ground cable could be black, white, or green. And the hot wire could either be black, or yellow…see how that could confuse someone? Especially since black was used as both a hot and a ground connection. Lastly, even though the neck and body are supposed to be a matched set, the neck pocket had way too much slop in it. This is really just not acceptable. The good news is that, like a neck that fits too tight, it can be fixed surprisingly easy, and if you want, I’ll show you how I did that in a future video. Also worth mentioning, the kit did come with general building instructions, but they weren’t specific to this particular bass kit, so I didn’t really find them all that useful. Build time was a little over an hour. It would’ve been easily way under an hour except for three things: 1) I got confused on the wiring because of the miss matched colors, 2) I had to fix the sloppy neck pocket. 3) I broke a neck screw during installation and struggled to get the broken screw out of the neck and body without doing any permanent damage. I finished the build with some spare neck screws I had. but if this happens to you, you need not fear! one quick email to Bragianmusician.com support and Zane from bargain musician had a new set of neck screw in my mailbox within two days! Seriously, you guys are killing it over there. Excellent customer service. Setting up this bass was really easy because the frets were already leveled, so it naturally can play with a nice low action. These strings are garbage though, the low E string is almost completely dead, and these other strings have kinks in them from being wadded up in the packaging. So here’s my summary: Things that are cool: Beautiful and unique looking bass Great tone from a great pickup (fun mix between p-bass and musicman style tone) Frets are leveled and crowned (which makes for an…) Easy build and setup Lightspeed fast free shipping and excellent customer service from bargainmusician.com Things that suck: a little more expensive than the cheaper kits (though I really think this is priced well for the quality you get compared to cheaper kits) electronics were confusing with mixed up wire colors I personally don’t care for the pre-shaped headstock design and it had a REALLY sloppy neck pocket

Best Cheap Beginner Bass Guitar Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass PJ Review

08:23
Adam reviews the Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass PJ guitar. The Candy Apple Red style is shown in the video. More info about the pickups (this was copied and pasted from another source): The typical P/J bass (passive pickups and no preamp) is meant to be a “best of both worlds” solution. The neck position “P” pickup will provide the grind and depth of tone typical of a Fender Precision Bass. The “J” pickup in the bridge position can provide the nasal tone made famous by artists such as Jaco Pastorius (using the Fender Jazz Bass) or can be blended with the neck pickup to add some sparkle. The controls are usually configured as what is called “V/V/T” - a volume control for each pickup and master tone control. The neck pickup (Precision) is the knob closest to the headstock (left knob from player's viewpoint). The middle knob is the bridge pickup is Jazz. This arrangement allows for much tonal flexibility as the player can use either pickup alone or blend them together. I usually prefer to start with both pickups at full volume and then back off the neck pickup until I find a particular instrument's sweet spot. I find this works well for most styles that I play. For blues and older R&B styles I will usually use just the neck position pickup. I normally leave the tone control fully on, but I might back it off slightly for darker tones. Many don't care for the P/J configuration for “slap and pop” styles. I really don't have a preference. On a P/J I just crank the knobs and slap away. Overall I really like the P/J sound. Best advice I can give you about building your dream bass? Start with a kit like this. Step 2) fix the problems with your kit If you watched my p bass kit review you'll remember my two gripes with the kit were that it didn't have a hole for the bridge ground connect, and the pickup was not aligned properly. Step 3) rout the body for additional pickups For this bass I'm adding a music man style pickup, and a vintage style mini humbucker like you'd find in the neck position of a rickenbacker, or a hofner style bass. To rout the body for additional pickup cavities, I just traced the spots where I wanted the pickups, and used a dremel tool with the 565 multi purpose cutting kit Next, drill a hole for the bridge ground connect. My kit didn't have one, and most drill bits won't be long enough for you to drill all the way thru from one side, so I figured out how to do it myself by drilling at the hole from both sides. Step 4) make your custom pickguard This is necessary since I've added pickups, and changed the placement of the original p pickup. To do this, Trace your kit pickguard onto the 1/8" birch plywood, and carefully measure where your new pickup placement is. Then cut it out with a jig saw or scroll saw. If your saw allows it, use a 45 degree angle around the perimeter. Okay step 5) Add 45 degree support screws for neck and body. Again, like the strat I built last time, this will help seat the neck tighter into the neck cavity providing as much surface contact as possible with the neck and body. Step 6) fix up the neck Shape the headstock to the custom shape of your choice, then level and crown the frets. Step 7) sand the neck and body, apply the finish of your choice, and take the time to really "make it yours" this is what will make your build really stand out from factory guitars. Step 8) properly shield your pickguard and pickup cavities. Trace and cut out pieces of foil and spray a light amount of adhesive on one side. Then stick it down on the back of the pickguard. Do the same for your pickup cavities, ensuring that all the foil connects together, and you make a small connection where the body cavity shielding comes up to touch the pickguard shield. Step 9) wire up your electronics. For my 3 pickups, I just wired it like a jazz bass, so each pickup has an independent volume control. Also, I ditched the tone knob because I never use it, I just leave it wide open all the time anyway, so why bother? Step 10) assemble your dream bass. Put a good set of strings on it. In my experience, fender or elixir bass strings have the best tone, medium or heavy gauge. ...continue reading on my blog at https://gunsandguitars.net (disclosure: links in this description may be affiliate links)

Impro on a (blues)theme I've had in my head forever ... sorry for the many mistakes and inaccuracies, it's just a free jam. In the beginning I play an original but stripped 1968 Fender Telecaster Bass with Nickel Rounds, then you see and hear my '66 Precision Bass - this time with Thomastik Flatwounds. The amp is a Music Man HD OneFifty + MusicMan 212RH One thirty. To gain a better sound (from the poweramp) I should have played MUCH louder - but it was night and I have neighbours ;-) *due to bad converting quality this is a NEW version*

Sold - 51- Style Precision Bass

06:09
Sold to Zaksnaporaz ! You're just great man ! ------- Allright, I'm finally selling this babe cause I've got plans to buy a Baby Bass... This is a Bach bass, czech-made. Maple neck and fretboard, super nice grainy mahogany body. I added the covers and strung it up with 50-110 flats, plus foam under the bridge cover for that truely vintage sound. Here's a quick and dirty roundout of the different sonic possibilities. I googled around and saw that there is no more imports for this brand, I don't even know if this particular model is still in production. Hence this is a definately rare, great sounding and custom '51 Pbass.
