Bjarne Stroustrup: The 5 Programming Languages You Need to Know

02:02
http://bigthink.com "Nobody should call themselves a professional if they only knew one language." Question: What are the five most important languages that programmers should know?Bjarne Stroustrup: First of all, nobody should call themselves a professional if they only knew one language.  And five is a good number for languages to know reasonably well.  And then you'll know a bunch, just because you're interested because you've read about them because you've wrote a couple of little programs like [...].  But five isn't a bad number.  Some of them book between three and seven.  Let's see, well my list is going to be sort of uninteresting because it's going to be the list of languages that are best known and useful, I'm afraid.  Let's see, C++, of course; Java; maybe Python for mainline work... And if you know those, you can't help know sort of a little bit about Ruby and JavaScript, you can't help knowing C because that's what fills out the domain and of course C-Sharp.  But again, these languages create a cluster so that if you knew either five of the ones that I said, you would actually know the others.  I haven't cheated with the numbers.  I rounded out a design space.  It would be nice beyond that to know something quite weird outside it just to have an experience, pick one of the functional languages, for instance, that's good to keep your head spinning a bit when it needs to.  I don't have any favorites in that field.  There's enough of them.  And, I don't know, if you're interested in high-performance numerical computation, you have to look at one of the languages there, but for most people that's just esoteric. Programming Basics: Statements & Functions: Crash Course Computer Science #12

11:57
Today, Carrie Anne is going to start our overview of the fundamental building blocks of programming languages. We’ll start by creating small programs for our very own video game to show how statements and functions work. We aren’t going to code in a specific language, but we’ll show you how conditional statements like IF and ELSE statements, WHILE loops, and FOR loops control the flow of programs in nearly all languages, and then we’ll finish by packaging up these instructions into functions that can be called by our game to perform more and more complex actions. What Is The History Of Programming Languages In HINDI | History Of Programming Languages HINDI : The first programming languages designed to communicate instructions to a computer were written in the 1950s. An early high-level programming language to be designed for a computer was Plankalkül, developed by the Germans for Z1 by Konrad Zuse between 1943 and 1945. Philip Wadler and Erik Meijer: On Programming Language Theory and Practice

15:06
Here, Erik Meijer and Philip Wadler discuss the theory and practice of programming language design with C# program manager Mads Torgersen. Philip is widely known for his significant contributions to functional programming (including Haskell and a classic book - Introduction to Functional Programming(Prentice Hall publisher) that is one of the best introductions to functional programming you can find) and programming language theory. You've learned about Mondas on Channel 9. Well, Philip is the guy that is in part responsible for their wide adoption in FP. Erik, as you know by now, is co-creator of LINQ, functional programming master, creator of the now unnamed "Volta" technologies, and much more. This is a great conversation on how theory winds its way into practice and how principles take time to embed themselves into modern language design (most modern languages are built on the ideas formed many years ago, as theoretical principles). Phillip and Erik also touch on langauge history and futures. Tune in.

The principles behind Differentiable Programming - Erik Meijer

01:06:33
Behind Every Great Deep Learning Framework Is An Even Greater Programming Languages Concept My life with Haskell, Linq, Rx and beyond Erik first caused some revolution in the interesting, but tiny, Haskell world. Then he decided to move on to Microsoft and to revolutionize C# and the .NET-world with Linq, maybe the largest change ever? His next step was to go open source and totally revolutionize several languages such as JavaScript, Java, C#, Python and so on with Reactive extensions (Rx) to make them support Reactive programming. For example Netflix has a lot of its success to thank Erik for! What is his next move? Come and listen to Erik's story from himself! From 2000 to early 2013 Erik Meijer was a software architect for Microsoft where he headed the Cloud Programmability Team. He then founded Applied Duality Inc. in 2013. Before that, he was an associate professor at Utrecht University. He received his Ph.D. from Nijmegen University in 1992. Meijer's research has included the areas of functional programming (particularly Haskell) compiler implementation, parsing, programming language design, XML, and foreign function interfaces. __________________________ Foo Café is a meeting place for people with an interest in software development and IT.
