In students of product design episode 5 I look at prototypes and model making. One of the reasons industrial design projects are not successful is because the designer didn't make enough prototypes to test ideas, prove concepts and highlight problems. Industrial designers have to make prototypes. You can never assume that just because something has been done before, you can progress straight to manufacture without prototyping your design. In this video I demonstrate this by designing a pair of pliers. A simple change to the handle means in use it pinches the palm of your hand. A quick prototype highlights this and saves time, money and embarrassment. So you have to do this phase in the design process to identify problems. But this isn't the only reason to prototype. Prototyping and model making is used to develop new mechanisms, test people's opinions, get important feed back in focus groups and trial different user interactions to work out how acceptable or feasible a new method of doing something would be. So for me, a good prototype is not the one that looks the most beautiful or is the most well made, it's the one that answers questions and moves you forward. Sometimes these are the ones that are a complete disaster as much as the ones that work. It can take more thought and effort to work out how to design the prototype to prove your idea, than the actual design itself. James Dyson said he had to make 5127 prototypes to get his first bag-less vacuum cleaner right, which is why today rapid prototyping is so useful, because of how accurately you can create prototypes from the data that will eventually go for manufacture. But rapid prototyping is not always cost effective or practical to use, most companies only have access to machines with relatively small bed sizes, so it's currently not the right method to use when developing anything large. There is still an important need for more traditional techniques. So don't underestimate how many questions you can answer quickly with card, sellotape,pieces of rubbish and Lego. Students of product design complain that they can't afford materials, but I learnt that everything we surround ourselves with can be repurposed as long as you always use appropriate safety gear and act responsibly. If you are in college or university, take advantage of everything available to you, because you will rarely have access to so much fantastic equipment under one roof again and progress to prototyping as soon as you can, because it will move your designs on faster. Understand Product Performance with Life Data Analysis using Weibull

Due to the long life times of today’s products it can be difficult for an engineer to analyse the time-to-failure data obtained under normal operating conditions. However, Life Data Analysis (Weibull Analysis) enables you to predict the life of a product by fitting a statistical distribution to life data from a representative sample of units. This data set can then be used to estimate important life characteristics of the product such as reliability or probability of failure at a specific time, the mean life and the failure rate. Watch this video to learn how to analyse product failures, from lab and field data, by generating models to predict expected life times using ReliaSoft Weibull++ software. This type of analysis can help identify issues early, by highlighting where failures appear on the bathtub curve and action can be taken proactively to fix problems.

Tesla Model 3 Track Mode and Beyond With Randy Pobst

Legendary driver Randy Pobst was instrumental in developing Tesla's Model 3 Track Mode as Tesla's go-to consultant. On March 31st 2019 Randy joined the Tesla track day event TeslaCorsa as a special guest and product development consultant of Unplugged Performance (UP). At the event Randy drove four different Tesla Model 3 Performance cars at different stages of tune. All four examples tested are privately owned and daily driven cars that utilize street tires and had no track day changes to hardware. They drove up like in the same configuration, raced, and cruised back home on autopilot: Sof's Car - No modifications Erik's Car - UP Super Sport Dual Rate springs + UP Sway Bars, UP Front Lip Spoiler, Factory Michelin Tires Mike's - Car UP Coilovers + UP Sport Brake Pads, Michelin Tires Kevin's - Car UP Race Coilovers + UP 6 Piston Carbon Ceramic Brakes + UP Sway Bars + UP Front Lip Spoiler + UP Billet Aluminum Front and Rear Adjustable Suspension Arms + UP Trunk Spoiler + 20" UP-03C wheels with Michelin Cup 2 tires Randy was documented driving the four different Performance Model 3's over the course of Sunday's TeslaCorsa 3 event. In-between driving the cars Randy also hosted a Q&A session in which he discussed his experience developing Track Mode with Tesla and his impressions/tips racing a Tesla Model 3. The Q&A session is included as bonus footage in this video. Additionally, for those interested in making the Model 3 even faster than stock, Randy provided specific feedback on the Unplugged Performance upgrade packages he was testing throughout the day. His direct impressions (shown in the video) will continue to influence future UP product development as work continues between Randy and Unplugged. * A note on lap times (Buttonwillow Raceway Configuration 13CW): Randy's reference lap with a full battery charge in a unmodified Performance Model 3 was 2:01.8 seconds (this compares to Porsche 997 Turbo at 2:02) Randy managed to get a clean lap in Kevin's car, however Randy reported that the Track Mode was strangely activating the brakes while he was on throttle (which only occurred on this car and which he has since reported to Tesla in hopes of potential future firmware updates to Track Mode). Nonetheless, Randy's lap with the traction control interference was a 1:58.5 As a reference a 997 Porsche Turbo GT2 runs a 1:59.7 on the same Cup 2 street tires Kevin's car had. Afterwards Randy said "Kevin's car was capable of a 1:54 - 1:55 lap if traction control wasn't stabbing the brakes while on throttle". This would put it in Porsche 991 GT3 RS territory (and faster than a McLaren 570S). On Erik's car (UP springs and sway bars) Randy did not log a fast lap with battery charged and open track. Randy estimates (in the video) that the springs and sway bars were good for 1-2 seconds a lap improvement compared to stock. On Mike's car Randy did not get a full battery charged lap in to measure. Randy does talk however about the benefits of the coilovers in the video despite not having clear lap time data from the day in that car. For a comparable lap time reference list: https://fastestlaps.com/tracks/buttonwillow-configuration-13 Most of Randy's laps were done with 20+ other cars on track and frequently without a full battery charge. The lap times, when applicable, help tell part of the story. However, the primary focus of Randy's time behind the wheel during this filmed day was to provide development feedback on the Unplugged Performance upgrades. For this reason (and due to the nature of the day's format in which the car owners were also driving their cars as well as letting Randy drive them) the cars often had low state of charge and therefore less power. Overall, there was little regard to create the conditions that result in "time attack" optimized timed laps.
