People have occasionally felt pressure to act or look a certain way based on their gender. This pressure can make people unhappy, if they are being asked to be or act in a way that does not match who they really are. Today people have more freedom than ever to express themselves in ways that feel true to who they are, regardless of their gender. #genderroles #genderidentity -------- ---- Please like, share and subscribe to AMAZE! Reversing Gender Roles In Sexist Vintage Ads 😍 Please subscribe: https://goo.gl/4etllm 😍 Credit for the images: http://www.elirezkallah.com/ The image of a perfect woman in the 1950s is familiar to all of us – a diligent wife, slaving around the house all day, preparing delicious meals for her hardworking husband, taking care of the children, and all that with a smile, of course. This image was reflected a lot in the ads of that era too. Inspired by them, photographer and video editor from Beirut, Lebanon, Eli Rezkallah created a series called “In A Parallel Universe” where he switched up the gender roles portrayed in those ads to reveal the absurdity of such stereotypes with humor. “Last Thanksgiving, I overheard my uncles talk about how women are better off cooking, taking care of the kitchen, and fulfilling “their womanly duties,” Rezkallah writes on his website. “Although I know that not all men are like my uncles and think that way, I was surprised to learn that some still do, so I went on to imagine a parallel universe, where roles are inverted and men are given a taste of their own sexist poison.” 😂 HERE ARE THE BEST OF "TOP 10 THINGS" 😂 Most Hilarious Bathroom Signs (And Fails) https://youtu.be/xS9QIm4aqS8 ONLY 7% CAN SEE IT! Kathryn Hughes explores the role of women in middle class Victorian society. Highlighting the conflicted and restrained behaviour expected of women between being learned but not too intelligent, beautiful but not sexual, Kathryn reveals the expectations on 19th-century women. She also explains how women such as Florence Nightingale and Elizabeth Barrett-Browning managed to challenge those expectations. Gender socialization is the process of learning the social expectations and attitudes associated with one's sex. Sociologists explain through gender socialization why human males and females behave in different ways: they learn different social roles. For example, girls learn to do different household chores than boys; girls learn to bake and clean, and boys learn to mow lawns and take out garbage. Gender socialization occurs through such diverse means as parental attitudes, schools, how peers interact with each other, and mass media. Sometimes gender roles lead to inequality; for example, women's social roles were once more restricted regarding politics, and United States law prohibited women from voting. Some researchers believe that biological differences underlie some behavioral differences between males and females; others disagree. ---------- Sociology tutoring on Chegg Tutors Learn about Sociology terms like Gender socialization on Chegg Tutors. “In our home, I take on a lot of responsibilities that previous generations would have scoffed at,” says Whit Honea, a co-founder of Dads 4 Change. In a new episode of Home School, The Atlantic’s animated series about parenting, Honea explains why, in a culture where outdated gender stereotypes are “very much alive,” parents shouldn’t dictate gender roles to their children. “By no means do I want to imply that it's wrong for kids to embrace things that they enjoy just because it falls on one [gender] or the other—just that it shouldn't be mandated by us,” Honea says.

The rapidly increasing number of women in the labor force has been both a cause and effect of the shift in gender roles in recent years. Women have had less time and often less energy to devote to their traditional role as homemaker. This has triggered a seismic shift in the division of labor in many households.

Child-rearing. The changing roles of mothers and fathers. Bores, chores and bedtime stories. How parenting has changed in half a century. In the 1960s, women spent around ten hours a week on childcare. They spend three times that on housework. And less than ten hours a week on paid work. And then the world changed. Paid work more than doubled as women resisted traditional roles. The amount of housework almost halved in that time. Childcare dipped slightly but then increased. Fathering too is different in interesting ways. In 1960s they spend on average 40 hours a week doing paid work. And they barely did any housework or childcare at all -- fewer than ten hours combined. But over time, they started spending less time at work. And as if by magical forces, they doubled their chores And fathers almost tripled the time spent with kids. So which parent got the better deal? Men work less and women work more. Both sides are probably happy with that. Fathers have finally lifted a broom -- but still do half as much housework as mums. It’s a tie. And both sides do more child-rearing. So it’s been a net gain for both of them -- and for the kids! For more video content from The Economist visit our website: http://econ.st/1qIQwsZ

Men and women, taken as groups, are different in important respects. The differences appear to be based on some combination of biological and cultural forces. But is gender role differentiation a sign of well-being and freedom? Christina Hoff Sommers explains how prosperity and equality may bring greater opportunities for self-actualization. I was the guest of the Buckley program. I had a wonderful time and was dazzled by a group of students who joined me for dinner. But a few days later the Yale Women’s Center issued an “official statement” about my lecture. What did it say? That’s coming up next on the Factual Feminist. The morning after my talk, the Women’s Center held a special event to evaluate my presentation. I would have been happy to attend but was not invited. In their “official statement” they say, “As an organization we took issue with several of Dr. Sommers’ key tenets. Sommers describes gender roles as biologically innate, rather than also constructed through culture and socialization.” They deemed my position “potentially dangerous” and even “xenophobic.” Dangerous? Xenophobic—Moi? As if. So here is the Factual Feminist’s “official reply.” Men and women, taken as groups, are different in important respects. And the differences appear to be based on some yet to be understood combination of biological and cultural forces. I know of no one who denies the role of culture—but many campus feminists seem to want to rule biology out of order. I said in my lecture that we have to be vigilant about expanding gender roles and allowing people to defect from the conventions of masculinity or femininity—on the other hand, I said we should also be tolerant of those who embody them. A few years ago I came across an academic study in The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology about differences between men and women that I think the Yale Women’s Center should take seriously. The researchers looked at gender and personality norms across 55 nations. Throughout the world, women tend to be more nurturing, risk averse, and emotionally expressive, while men are tend to be more competitive, risk taking, and emotionally flat—(oh dear, that sounds pejorative—I prefer to say stoical.) But the most fascinating finding is this: They found that personality differences between men and women are the largest and most robust in the more prosperous, advanced industrial societies—like the US, Canada, and France. According to the authors, nations with high social development—long life expectancy, high levels of literacy, education, and income—are likely to have the largest sex differences in personality. Why should that be? The authors hypothesize that prosperity and equality bring greater opportunities for self-actualization—men and women are empowered to be who they most truly are. For example, it is conspicuously the case that gay liberation is a feature of advanced, prosperous societies: such societies afford almost everyone on the gender spectrum more opportunities to embrace their gender identities. This cross-cultural research is far from conclusive, but it is intriguing. Just think: What if gender differentiation can be a sign not of oppression but of well-being—of freedom and genuine equality? Let me give an example. I recently saw an article on the Wharton School website that laments the dearth of women engineers and holds up China and Russia as superior examples of equity. More women in those countries are engineers than in the US, and the author blames this on workplace biases and stereotypes. But perhaps American women earn fewer degrees in engineering because, compared to their Russian and Chinese counterparts, they have more opportunities to pursue careers that interest them more. It appears that in the pursuit of happiness, men and women take somewhat different paths. The Yale Women’s center critics seem to think this view is reactionary and harmful to women. #aei #news #politics #government #education #feminism #feminist

Corporations across Europe share the same problem: a dramatic gender gap in leadership. Although the size of this gap varies from country to country, men far outnumber women in senior business leadership. What makes the most senior positions in business so inaccessible to women -- even in countries where there is considerable government and social support for gender equality? Senior women leaders across Western Europe tell us that gender stereotyping is an important barrier to consider; and our research supports it. While solutions are often sought through policy and engineered approaches, the real barriers to change may be much more personal and insidious. The companies that focus on tackling deep-seated bias and making their organizations safer for mavericks -- who are less concerned with fitting in and more on making a contribution -- may be the most effective in fixing the gender gap and, more critically, in business. Eleanor Tabi Haller-Jorden has led Catalyst Europe since 2006, when it was established to work with corporate and academic members in Europe through thought-provoking events and programs that reflect the cultural diversity of the region. Under her direction, Catalyst Europe engages members and selects partners who are committed to developing creative solutions around organizational inclusion and innovation with the aim of being a learning lab that supports workplace innovation by practicing it. Apart from her European responsibilities, Eleanor Tabi Haller-Jorden holds a broader advisory role within Catalyst with a focus on developing the organization and its brand globally. A frequent media contributor and lecturer (IMD, London School of Economics and Political Science, Yale School of Organization and Management, Columbia University Business School), Eleanor Tabi Haller-Jorden also sits on numerous boards. She is Chairperson of the The Humanity Initiative's Executive Board and Co-Chair of the Healthcare Businesswomen's Association (HBA) European Board. Other board appointments include: the EU's Steering Scientific Committee, Seventh Framework Programme, Meta-analysis for Gender and Science Research; the Academy of Business and Society and Öko-Institut's Advisory Board for the IMPACT initiative; and the Advisory Board of the Tosca Group Future of Organisations Consortium. Eleanor Tabi Haller-Jorden has been designated a European Thought Leader on behalf of IBM's Global Innovation Outlook initiative and showcased in Profiles in Diversity Journal. Most recently, she has been appointed as a Leadership Advisor for the Zurich chapter of Room to Read, a global organization focused on literacy and gender equality in education. Before joining Catalyst Europe, Eleanor Tabi Haller-Jorden worked in cross-cultural talent management and strategic planning as the Managing Director of the Paradigm Group. Prior to that, she was Founder and Director of the Public Policy Center in Philadelphia. She is also a former Vice President of the Advisory Services group at Catalyst. She attended Princeton University as an advanced standing scholar and Bryn Mawr College, where she earned her A.B. magna cum laude in history. She earned her M.Sc. in Industrial Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Eleanor Tabi Haller-Jorden is a single mother of two boys and an avid windsurfer. In her spare time, she is a performance poet—an entertainer who creates poetry onstage—and has performed in Zurich, Oslo, and London. She is the owner of the Living Gallery, a virtual art space and gallery in Switzerland. The Building Awareness of Gender Differences that are Important to Healthcare and Research Studies videos were created as part of a grant to The Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library from the National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health. The videos are intended for use by researchers, course instructors and students. The hope is that awareness of gender issues specific to each community and across communities will improve the ways in which researchers and healthcare providers collaborate with diverse communities throughout the research and healthcare process. The Community Faces of Utah (CFU) agreed to be a partner in this project, sharing the perspectives of each community as part of the effort to educate researchers and healthcare providers. CFU community leaders recruited women and men from each of the their communities for the video interviews.

Due to the influence of intellectual charlatans like John Money and Theodore Adorno, modern western society has rejected traditional gender roles. The result has been widespread dysfunction and degeneracy.
