Whatever you need a website for, create yours today with Wix: https://www.wix.com/go/infographics2019 What was life like for Roman slaves? Let's look at this historic era of ancient Rome and see how they treated their people. Slaves in ancient Rome weren’t all laborers working hard under the hot sun as some wicked slave driver stood behind them with a whip in his hand. Many of the slaves were domestic servants, some were skilled artisans, others were even said to be highly educated physicians. The ones who did generally have a very hard life were those that were doing their time as property of a Roman as a punishment. Life for these people was brutal and often very short. For that reason there were sometimes slave revolts, with the one you all probably know about being led by the slave Spartacus. This former gladiator and military leader took part in what are now called The Servile Wars. But what about the average joe slaves? So, as Roman slaves lived such diverse lives, let’s start with the great Spartacus. The Greek writer Plutarch tells us that Spartacus was “a Thracian by birth, who had once served as a soldier with the Romans, but had since been a prisoner and sold for a gladiator.” If he was indeed Thracian, that would mean he came from what we now called Bulgaria, or possibly Greece or Turkey. While sources differ, it’s said that Spartacus was first captured by Roman legions and then trained in gladiatorial school. If you’ve seen our show on what sometimes went down in the Roman Coliseum, you’ll know that gladiators didn’t exactly have an easy life. What do we know about the schools? Well, these prisoners of war were kept often two to a cell. They were in fact in prison, but each day they would train outside of their cells in an arena. Gladiators had different kinds of skills and training methods, and Thracian gladiators practiced in the art of swordsmanship. National Geographic tells us that the slaves were not allowed out of the fortress unless being taken to the coliseum or another arena. But while the cells were not exactly a great place to live, it’s said there were heated floors for winter, baths, an infirmary, and the slaves lived in confines that were equipped with plumbing. Historians say these gladiators were highly valued slaves, and so they were kept in good condition so they could fight well. These slaves, we are told, would not usually die or even be treated too badly in their prison. They occupied a 32-square-foot (3-square-meter) cell, which as we said, was probably shared with one more person. Top 10 Reasons Ancient Rome was a Perverts Paradise We all know Rome was a weird place. After all, people went everywhere in togas, had sex with their sisters and spent their free time watching Russell Crowe fight tigers. But what most of us don't know is just how perverted a place it really was. And I don't just mean for the Emperors and their concubines: daily life in Ancient Rome was a nonstop orgy of prostitution, child-sex and, well, orgies. After all, even the most straight-laced, conservative Roman could be expected to enjoy: Text version: http://www.toptenz.net/top-10-reasons-ancient-rome-was-a-perverts-paradise.php Coming up: 10. Check out our new website for more incredible history documentaries: HD and ad-free. http://bit.ly/2O6zUsK On August 27th 79AD, the Roman town of Pompeii was buried under a torrent of lava and ash when Vesuvius roared into life with a mighty eruption What survives of the town is an extraordinary archaeological record, but Pompeii's remains can only tell us part of the story. Much has been lost, looted and damaged in the 250 years since the town was re-discovered, and the excavations offer only an illusion of immediacy. To really understand Pompeii, we need to get under the skin. Using a mixture of lavish dramatisations, computer graphic environments and the guidance of leading experts, The Private Lives Of Pompeii offers a unique look at the people who lived and died there. What were their hopes and fears, their rivalries and their loves? Seventeen years before the eruption the town had already experienced a terrible disaster having been at the epicentre of a huge and devastating earthquake. Ray Laurence, historian at Reading University, says: "The earthquake could be seen as a catalyst... We might see more of the tensions of the town. In a way an earthquake presents opportunities for social mobility. It's an opportunity for a town as much as a tragedy. Some people get richer, some people are devastated by it." In the years following, all the tensions and dynamics of the Roman world were somehow focused and intensified. As the society strove to rebuild and recover itself, a competitive, ambitious and sometimes treacherous world was revealed. New money challenged old values. The traditional hierarchies of power and status could no longer be taken for granted. The Private Lives Of Pompeii explores this world through the stories of fictionalised characters and events rigorously grounded in historical fact. Scaurus Vettius, an ambitious entrepreneurial freed slave, appears to be on the way up. Gaius Terentius Sabinus may be on the way down. Each seemingly needs the other to achieve status and power in the municipal elections. Gaius' father, Terentius Senex is an ageing aristocrat desperate to maintain the family's power through his son's political advancement. The elegant widow, Julia Felix, looks for a new man, but may have to give up her son. And Petronia Justa is fighting in the courts for recognition as a free woman. Content licensed from DRG. The Kalaidzhi bride market takes place in the southeast of Bulgaria every year. Unmarried women are often paired off with financially strong men. But more and more young Roma are rebelling against the old tradition. For young Kalaidzhi the annual bride market at Bachkovo Monastery is the only chance to find a partner. Their Orthodox Christian faith and traditional code of conduct prohibit them from dating, flirting or having any other pre-marital relations. The Kalaidzhi - a name meaning tinsmiths or boilermakers - marry only within the group. Finding a spouse from outside - and in particular a non-Roma Bulgarian - is out of the question. Love is only a secondary consideration. What matters is the dowry. A growing number of young Roma, however, are rebelling against the traditional marriage market. They want to make their own decisions, and to love and marry the person of their choice. For girls especially - some as young as 15 when they are put up for marriage - the wedding is the end of self-determined life. They will subsequently be housewives and mothers. The film accompanies 17-year-old Teni and 19-year-old Maria in the week before the market day. For them it means buying a lot of new clothes and masses of other preparations. Can this be a way to find true love? And how is the outdated ritual affected by the Internet and social media? _______ Exciting, powerful and informative – DW Documentary is always close to current affairs and international events. Read for Yourself Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl III. THE SLAVES' NEW YEAR'S DAY. DR. FLINT owned a fine residence in town, several farms, and about fifty slaves, besides hiring a number by the year. Hiring-day at the south takes place on the 1st of January. On the 2d, the slaves are expected to go to their new masters. On a farm, they work until the corn and cotton are laid. They then have two holidays. Some masters give them a good dinner under the trees. This over, they work until Christmas eve. If no heavy charges are meantime brought against them, they are given four or five holidays, whichever the master or overseer may think proper. Then comes New Year's eve; and they gather together their little alls, or more properly speaking, their little nothings, and wait anxiously for the dawning of day. At the appointed hour the grounds are thronged with men, women, and children, waiting, like criminals, to hear their doom pronounced. The slave is sure to know who is the most humane, or cruel master, within forty miles of him. It is easy to find out, on that day, who clothes and feeds his slaves well; for he is surrounded by a crowd, begging, "Please, massa, hire me this year. I will work very hard, massa." If a slave is unwilling to go with his new master, he is whipped, or locked up in jail, until he consents to go, and promises not to run away during the year. Should he chance to change his mind, thinking it justifiable to violate an extorted promise, woe unto him if he is caught! The whip is used till the blood flows at his feet; and his stiffened limbs are put in chains, to be dragged in the field for days and days! If he lives until the next year, perhaps the same man will hire him again, without even giving him an opportunity of going to the hiring-ground. After those for hire are disposed of, those for sale are called up. O, you happy free women, contrast your New Year's day with that of the poor bond-woman! With you it is a pleasant season, and the light of the day is blessed. Friendly wishes meet you every where, and gifts are showered upon you. Even hearts that have been estranged from you soften at this season, and lips that have been silent echo back, "I wish you a happy New Year." Children bring their little offerings, and raise their rosy lips for a caress. They are your own, and no hand but that of death can take them from you. But to the slave mother New Year's day comes laden with peculiar sorrows. She sits on her cold cabin floor, watching the children who may all be torn from her the next morning; and often does she wish that she and they might die before the day dawns. She may be an ignorant creature, degraded by the system that has brutalized her from childhood; but she has a mother's instincts, and is capable of feeling a mother's agonies. On one of these sale days, I saw a mother lead seven children to the auction-block. She knew that some of them would be taken from her; but they took all. The children were sold to a slave-trader, and their mother was bought by a man in her own town. Before night her children were all far away. She begged the trader to tell her where he intended to take them; this he refused to do. How could he, when he knew he would sell them, one by one, wherever he could command the highest price? I met that mother in the street, and her wild, haggard face lives to-day in my mind. She wrung her hands in anguish, and exclaimed, "Gone! All gone! Why don't God kill me?" I had no words wherewith to comfort her. Instances of this kind are of daily, yea, of hourly occurrence. Slaveholders have a method, peculiar to their institution, of getting rid of old slaves, whose lives have been worn out in their service. I knew an old woman, who for seventy years faithfully served her master. She had become almost helpless, from hard labor and disease. Her owners moved to Alabama, and the old black woman was left to be sold to any body who would give twenty dollars for her.

In the U.S. we are all keenly aware of our history of black slavery. Also, on average, there is a general understanding of slavery in ancient history, Rome, Greece, etc. However, less is known about the extensive history of Blacks enslaving Blacks, Blacks enslaving Whites, and Muslims enslaving both Blacks and Whites. Between 1500 and 1800 A.D. there were so many white slaves in North Africa it was said you could "swap a Christian for an onion" because the supply was so high, the price was so low. Some European painters romanticized Harem life with a blasé or laissez faire attitude towards slavery with very little suggestion of the sorrows those young women repressed within themselves for fear of a beating, or worse. Yet, there are instances where you can almost detect a gloominess behind the forced smiles in some of the more detailed portraits. Glimpses of this obfuscated helplessness and despair may be due to the artist's talent or more likely one's own imagination. You make the call. A gilded cage is still a cage. Just as a rose, by any other name, is still a rose. Warning: Video with explicit content! This video is a collage of some History Channel documentaries, investigating the sex trade in The Roman Empire -significantly in the city of Pompeii. Most of the prostitutes in Rome were slaves from the occupied lands, therefore a blonde woman was easily tagged as a prostitute -referring to her neighbouring germanic tribal origin. These working women lived and worked in filthy "sex-cells" and used cheap ointments, pommades, make-up, depilatory creams and perfumed oils, therefore had a significant odor emitting from their bodies which accompanied the smell of their professions and living conditions. Cosmetics, and especially their overuse, were commonly associated with prostitutes, both being regarded as immoral and seductive. The Latin word lenocinium actually meant both "prostitution" and "makeup". Due to their low income, they tended to use cheaper cosmetics, which emitted rather foul odors. This, combined with the strong, exotic scents used to cover up the stench, made brothels smell especially rank. The procuress of a brothel often used the promise of beauty to entice girls to enter the profession. As prostitutes aged, with their income dependent on their appearance, they opted for more copious amounts of makeup. Scent was also an important factor of beauty. Women who smelled good were presumed to be healthy. Due to the stench of many of the ingredients used in cosmetics at the time, women often drenched themselves in copious amounts of perfume. Over the door of each cell was a tablet (titulus) upon which was the name of the occupant and her price; the reverse bore the word "occupata" and when the inmate was engaged the tablet was turned so that this word was out. Besides the odour molecules radiated from their bodies, their status in the social ladder was also considered as "foul smelling", which meant that a metaphorical olfactory label was attached to their invisible i.d.s. These prostitıutes were called Lupae -"she wolves". Some authorities affirm that this name was given them because of a peculiar wolflike cry they uttered, and others assert that the generic was bestowed upon then because their rapacity rivalled that of the wolf. Servius, however, in his commentary on Virgil, has assigned a much more improper and filthy reason for the name; he alludes to the manner in which the wolf who mothered Romulus and Remus licked their bodies with her tongue, and this hint is sufficient to confirm him in his belief that the lupa; were not less skilled in lingual gymnastics. The Floralia Festival, first introduced about 238 B.C., had a powerful influence in giving impetus to the spread of prostitution. The account of the origin of this festival, given by Lactantius, while no credence is to be placed in it, is very interesting. "When Flora, through the practice of prostitution, had come into great wealth, she made the people her heir, and bequeathed a certain fund, the income of which was to be used to celebrate her birthday by the exhibition of the games they call the Floralia" Besides the official tax paying brothels, the arches under the circus were a favorite location for prostitutes; ladies of easy virtue were ardent frequenters of the games of the circus and were always ready at hand to satisfy the inclinations which the spectacles aroused. These arcade dens were called "fornices," from which comes our generic "fornication". Cemeteries, were also venues for cheap payed sex to take place. A higher class of sex workers who not only accompanied men in bed but also escorted them in social gatherings were called the "courtesans". Courtesans were not described as "foul smelling" as the prostitutes were, but rather "faintingly sweet" or "dangerously poisonous". Courtesans often received cosmetics and perfumes as gifts or partial payment. For more information about everything related to the sense of smell, please visit http://www.facebook.com/vedatozankoku

Ashanti is an action adventure film, set against the background of modern day slave trading, with a man who determinedly takes on a perilous journey in order to find his beautiful wife, who has been kidnapped by brutal slave traders. David and Anansa Linderby (Caine and Johnson respectively) are doctors with the World Health Organization. On a medical mission carrying out an inoculation programme, they visit a West African village. While David takes photographs of tribal dancers, Anansa goes swimming alone. She is attacked and abducted by slave traders led by Suleiman (Peter Ustinov), who mistake her for an Ashanti tribeswoman. The police can do nothing to find her and David has almost given up hope when he hears rumours that Anansa has been kidnapped by Sulieman to be sold to Arab Prince Hassan (Omar Sharif). The African authorities deny that the slave trade even exists so David must find help in a shadowy world where the rescuers of slaves are just as ruthless as the traders themselves. As David tracks her across Africa and the Sahara desert, he is helped by a member of the Anti-Slavery League (Rex Harrison), a mercenary helicopter pilot (William Holden), and Malik (Kabir Bedi) a tribesman who is seeking revenge on Suleiman.

In 1957, Kyle Onstott was an American novelist wrote "Mandingo" at the age of 70. The film of the same name was released in 1975. From 1610 to 1863 in America, the descendants of plantation owners lived as gods. More than 20 generation, the descendants of plantation owners had absolute power over life and death of their captives (Africans captives) and white woman. Their level of cruelty could only be compared to European Medieval Times. They are presently known as the "White Supremacists" It took the Civil War, the lose of millions of lives and the destruction of America's southern states to rip this slave culture from their hands. The descendants of White supremacists have done everything in their power to return back to this lifestyle. For over 100 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Jim Crow Laws maintained white supremacy until 1965. The Civil Rights Movement forced the passing of the Civil Rights Bill and the Voting Rights Bill. As late as 2013, 50 years after the passing of the Voting Rights Bill, the US Supreme Court invalidates key parts of the Voting Rights Act.
