For Maritime Institutes: 1 Check all the approvals obtained by the institute and provided by the particular country’s shipping authority. Check – List of Institutes Approved By DG Shipping India 2. Maritime institutes which provides courses approved by foreign authority needs to be screened properly. For e.g. there are many institutes in India, which are accredited by UK maritime authority and colleges to provide the required degree and seaman documents to seafarers. Before taking admission in any of such institute, do confirm the minimum approval requirements and crosscheck them with the approval/ accrediting body by sending a query mail or contacting their office through phone. 3. Check the shipping authority eligibility requirement (physical, medical and technical) and compare it with the institution. 4. Check the management and founder members/ core institute of the college or academy. 5. If you are interested in any institute and keen to take admission, the best way of getting genuine feedback is to go to that institute for fundamental background check and talk to the current students. 6. Avoid taking admission in those institute which are new/ doubtful and do not provide any clear approval documentation. For Shipping Agents: 1 The other side of the coin (maritime institute) in the ship industry are the ship manning companies and agents. To legalize and streamline this sector, the shipping authority approve such companies and agent. For e.g. in India, a ship manning company has to be RPSL approved (i.e. they have Recruitment, Placement Services License). 2. If you are in contact with an agent for ship based job, ensure he has a genuine RPS license. 3. To safeguard his/her fraud identity, agents may say the agency approval is under renewal. Never believe it and even if you feel the agency is genuine, wait for the authority to renew the license. Check – List of Agencies With RPS Licenses 4. A genuine agency or agent will never communicate the official matter through personal emails and if they are professional enough, they will have a proper official email id and a fully-functional company website. 5. However, having a company website, a letterhead and official email id is not a guarantee of genuine agency. 6. It is worth noting that under the recently enforced Maritime Labour Convention 2006, crewmen are not meant to be charged a placement fee by Manning Agents. A fraud agent will demand money against the payment of a fee, variously called “Administration”, “Facilitation” or “Service” fees, or other such designations. Never ever pay such money. 7. With lack of jobs for entry level candidates, the students are desperate and are still willing to pay manning agents to get placed onboard for training. In such cases, never pay money in advance and understand what kind of company and ship you are going for. 8. As mentioned earlier, due to lack of openings for freshers, fraud agencies are taking advantage of the situation. These fraud agent/ agency try not to cheat one but several people. Try to get as much information as possible through social media and search engines. 9. Do not fall in trap against the claim that the agency will give in writing for providing 100% job placement when student approach them for maritime education and payment. The written statement from the company can be – Provide 100% placement to the candidate without mentioning the time frame or even the time frame is mentioned; they will also not be sure about which type of ship or company you will be placed.

Crown-of-thorns starfish Detection system - COTSBot
This work presents a novel vision-based underwater robotic system for the identification and control of Crown-Of-Thorns starfish (COTS) in coral reef environments. COTS have been identified as one of the most significant threats to Australia's Great Barrier Reef. These starfish literally eat coral, impacting large areas of reef and the marine ecosystem that depends on it. Evidence has suggested that land-based nutrient runoff has accelerated recent outbreaks of COTS requiring extensive use of divers to manually inject biological agents into the starfish in an attempt to control population numbers. Facilitating this control program using robotics is the goal of our research. For information on robotics related research at the Queensland University of Technology please visit the following links. link to the project page: https://wiki.qut.edu.au/display/cyphy/COTSBot [email protected] home page (https://wiki.qut.edu.au/display/cyphy/[email protected]). Viking Star Cruise Ship : The complete tour
MV Viking Star is the lead ship of the Viking Star-class of cruise ships, and the first such ship operated by Viking Ocean Cruises, a division of Viking Cruises. She entered service in April 2015. Two Viking Star-class sister ships, Viking Sea and Viking Sky, will join her in the Viking Ocean Cruises fleet in 2016. Full specifications: Class and type: Viking Star-class Type: Cruise ship Tonnage: 47,800 GT Length: 228 metres long Beam: 29 metres wide Draught: 6.3 metres Decks: 14 Propulsion: 2 azipods Speed: 20 knots Capacity: 930 passengers Crew: 602 crewmembers Viking Star was designed by SMC Design of London, while Rottet Studio in Los Angeles was engaged to design her interior. The vessel's modern Scandinavian design ties in with that of Viking Cruises' river cruisers, and was intended to mix onboard elegance with a focus on destinations. As a relatively small vessel, Viking Star is able to access most ports directly, and thus facilitate efficient and trouble-free embarkation and debarkation processes. She also has a hydro-dynamically optimised streamlined hull and bow for maximum fuel efficiency. The ship's first plate was cut on 7 June 2013 at the Fincantieri Marghera shipyard in Marghera, Italy. The plate cutting ceremony was attended, among others, by Torstein Hagen, founder and chairman of Viking. The keel was laid on 18 December 2013. Fincantieri launched Viking Star on 23 June 2014, about 20 days earlier than the previously announced launch date in mid-July. In October 2014, Viking Ocean Cruises announced that Norwegian seafarer Gulleik Svalastog had been appointed as the captain of Viking Star. Captain Svalastog had more than 45 years of experience in the maritime industry, and most recently he had served as a captain for Color Line. He had previously held a variety of senior ship management positions, including the roles of superintendent for Norwegian Cruise Line and Crystal Cruises, and lead auditor for Det Norske Veritas. His initial task as captain was to be a member of the team overseeing the final stage of Viking Star‍ 's outfitting and interior build-out. In mid-December 2014, the ship successfully completed a week long period of sea trials in the Aegean Sea, during which she underwent more than 80 different tests. A variety of functions and systems were evaluated, including engine and propulsion performance, the navigation systems, and cabin acoustics. Viking Ocean Cruises took delivery of Viking Star at the shipyard on 28 March 2015. Public areas On board, Viking Star features 2 pools, the main pool and the Infinity Pool, a spa and a fitness center. She also has two restaurants, lounges, the piano lounge and the explorers lounge, the wintergarden, the aquavit terrace and the world cafe. Also, Viking Star has a sports deck, the star theatre and bar, the lobby bar and various shops. Accommodation Viking Star has five stateroom categories, all with private verandas, and 14 Explorer Suites. Up to 930 passengers can be accommodated in her 465 staterooms and suites, all of which are spacious for a cruise ship. The smallest staterooms are 25 m2 (270 sq ft) in size; the two-room suites range from 70.3 m2 (757 sq ft) to 134.5 m2 (1,448 sq ft) in area, and feature wrap-around private balconies offering sweeping views. Machinery The vessel is fitted with energy-efficient hybrid engines, and onboard solar panels and exhaust pollution-minimising equipment to enable her to meet strict environmental regulations. Her Compac propeller shaft bearings, manufactured by Thordon Bearings, are lubricated by seawater, which is recycled into the ocean. The use of seawater as a lubricant lowers in-service maintenance costs, by eliminating the requirement for an aft seal. The seawater lubricant also replaces expensive biodegradable oils, which, if used, would need to be stored, sampled and disposed of, and would also create a risk of accidental oil discharge. Entertainment facilities The theatre features live entertainment, as well as new-release films and some old favourites. Additionally, there are port talks and lectures from the on-board cultural enrichment programmes on art, history and culture. The lecture programme includes academic lecturers, local speakers and interactive demonstrations. Travel by cruise ship to Panama Canal (HD)
Travel by cruise ship to Panama Canal , Visit Panama Canal, Panama Canal Tours, Panama Canal Vacation Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=World1Tube The Panama Canal is a 77.1-kilometre (48 mi) ship canal in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean (via the Caribbean Sea) to the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international maritime trade. There are locks at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal, 26 metres (85 ft) above sea level. The current locks are 33.5 metres (110 ft) wide. A third, wider lane of locks is currently under construction and is due to open in 2016. France began work on the canal in 1881, but had to stop because of engineering problems and high mortality due to disease. The United States took over the project in 1904, and took a decade to complete the canal, which was officially opened on August 15, 1914. One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, the Panama Canal shortcut greatly reduced the time for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, enabling them to avoid the lengthy, hazardous Cape Horn route around the southernmost tip of South America via the Drake Passage or Strait of Magellan. The shorter, faster, and safer route to the U.S. West Coast and to nations in and around the Pacific Ocean allowed those places to become more integrated with the world economy. It takes between 20 and 30 hours to traverse the canal. During construction, ownership of the territory that is now the Panama Canal was first Colombian, then French, and then American. The US continued to control the canal and surrounding Panama Canal Zone until the 1977 Torrijos–Carter Treaties provided for handover to Panama. After a period of joint American–Panamanian control, the canal was taken over by the Panamanian government in 1999, and is now managed and operated by the Panama Canal Authority, a Panamanian government agency. Annual traffic has risen from about 1,000 ships in 1914, when the canal opened, to 14,702 vessels in 2008, the latter measuring a total of 309.6 million Panama Canal/Universal Measurement System (PC/UMS) tons. By 2008, more than 815,000 vessels had passed through the canal; the largest ships that can transit the canal today are called Panamax. The American Society of Civil Engineers has named the Panama Canal one of the seven wonders of the modern world.

8 Bells Lecture I Norman Friedman: Fighting the Great War at Sea
Norman Friedman, "Fighting the Great War at Sea," Eight Bells Book Lecture, Naval War College Museum, Oct. 9, 2014. Norman Friedman discusses his book and concentrates on how each side tried to use or deny the sea to the other during this global war as it examines strategic, technical, and tactical approaches to sea control. Fought during a time of rapidly changing ship and weapon technology, the war brought new concepts in tactical practices and the use of command and control. The perceived lessons from this war set the stage for the use of naval forces during the Second World War. ***** Disclaimer: The views expressed are the speaker's own and may not necessarily reflect the views of the Naval War College, the Department of the Navy, the Department of Defense, or any other branch or agency of the U.S. Government.

Russia: This sea-urchin-laced CHOCOLATE will make you live longer say scientists
Russian scientists unveiled a new line of chocolates in Vladivostok on Thursday that should help promote longevity after being infused with marine vitamins. The new product was named “Maritime Masterpiece” and includes elements from echinoderms including starfish and sea urchins. SOT, Ludmila Tekutieva, Director of the Innovation and Technology Centre at the Eastern Federal University (Russian): “[Chocolate] is a product that, after consumption, allows us to produce serotonin, an element responsible for our good mood, for the psychological state. No wonder it is used by pilots, in the army and in the Arctic. Chocolate is used for these purposes. But the useful characteristics were enhanced by those ingredients, which are designed at the Pacific Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry from the marine echinoderms.” SOT, Mikhail Kusakin, Deputy Director of the Innovation and Technology Centre at the Eastern Federal University (Russian): “These elements are oxidation retarders. They increase cellular energy absorption. After absorbing elements of this kind, the number of mitochondria in the cells increases. They increase the number of those organelles that provide the cell with energy. In this way, the body's endurance increases, because the cell receives more energy.” Video ID: 20160312-019 Video on Demand: http://www.ruptly.tv Contact: [email protected] Twitter: http://twitter.com/Ruptly Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/Ruptly LiveLeak: http://www.liveleak.com/c/Ruptly Vine: https://vine.co/Ruptly Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/Ruptly YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/RuptlyTV DailyMotion: http://www.dailymotion.com/ruptly

Made in Germany | Offshore Energy: Germany Plans Wind Parks on the Open Sea
As more and more windy areas on land fill with rotors to convert wind power to electricity, manufacturers are pushing to move their facilities offshore, where the wind is stronger and steadier. Germany has plans to generate 25,000 megawatts of power from offshore wind energy by 2030. That corresponds to 15 percent of electricity use. The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency has given the green light for six wind turbines for commercial use to be built 45 kilometers off the North Sea island of Borkum. The operator will be Alpha Ventus. Ironically, the wind has delayed construction until 2009. But a model plant is being built off the mainland town of Hooksiel. Three pipes, three meters in diameter are being rammed 45 meters deep into the Wadden Sea. Then come the tower, the gondola and the 60 meter long rotor blades. Made in Germany was there to see the giant wind energy plant put together.

US Sends Ships to South China Sea ‘to Create Trouble’ - Chinese Envoy
US Sends Ships to South China Sea ‘to Create Trouble’ - Chinese Envoy SUBSCRIBE my channel here: https://goo.gl/F8gn4Z G+ here: https://goo.gl/UzMJVe ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- China’s chief envoy in London accused “some big countries outside the region” of coming “all the way to the South China Sea to create trouble,” where China claims large expanses of sea and atolls. Ambassador of China to the United Kingdom Liu Xiaoming told the annual Induction Programme for Commonwealth Diplomats organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat Wednesday that regional powers had made major strides toward resolving tensions in the South China Sea by themselves. "Yet to everyone's confusion, some big countries outside the region did not seem to appreciate the peace and tranquillity in the South China Sea," Liu said. "They sent warships and aircraft all the way to the South China Sea to create trouble." The ambassador brought attention to the efforts between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to settle regional disputes among themselves. Six nations claim at least some of the South China Sea: China, Taiwan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei and Malaysia. ASEAN membership largely overlaps with that list: Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. In February, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang told reporters that China and ASEAN had begun a "mechanism" through which "various sides will have a full and in-depth exchange of views" on implementing a Declaration of Conduct in the South China Sea "and advancing maritime practical cooperation and consultations on the Code of Conduct (COC) in the South China Sea." "Thanks to the joint efforts of China and ASEAN countries, the current situation in the South China Sea has stabilized and taken on a sound momentum. China and ASEAN countries have the willingness and confidence to build on such momentum of dialogue and cooperation to achieve more positive progress and results and further cement the sound situation in the region," Lu said, ... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
