Arctic sea ice appears to have reached a record low wintertime maximum extent for 2017, according to scientists at the NASA-supported National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) in Boulder, Colo. Observations indicate that on September 13th, ice extent shrunk to the eighth lowest in the satellite record, at 4.64 million sq km, or 1.79 million sq mi. In this visualization, the daily Arctic sea ice and seasonal land cover change progress through time, from this year’s wintertime maximum extent on March 7, 2017, through September 13, 2017 when the sea ice reached its annual minimum extent for the year. Over the water, Arctic sea ice changes from day to day showing a running 3-day minimum sea ice concentration in the region where the concentration is greater than 15%. The blueish white color of the sea ice is derived from a 3-day running minimum of the AMSR2 89 GHz brightness temperature. Over the terrain, monthly data from the seasonal Blue Marble Next Generation fades slowly from month to month. Download the video: https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/4455.

This visualization shows the daily Arctic sea ice and seasonal land cover change progress through time, from January 1, 2016, through September 10, 2016 when the sea ice reached its annual minimum extent for the year. The 2016 Arctic sea ice minimum is the second lowest minimum extent on the satellite record, 4.14 million square kilometers (1.60 million square miles). Here the sea ice changes from day to day showing a running 3-day minimum sea ice concentration in the region where the concentration is greater than 15%. The blueish white color of the sea ice is derived from a 3-day running minimum of the AMSR2 89 GHz brightness temperature. Over the terrain, monthly data from the seasonal Blue Marble Next Generation fades slowly from month to month. Satellite-based passive microwave images of the sea ice have provided a reliable tool for continuously monitoring changes in the Arctic ice since 1979. Every summer the Arctic ice cap melts down to what scientists call its "minimum" before colder weather begins to cause ice cover to increase. The first six months of 2016 have been the warmest first half of any year in our recorded history of surface temperature (which go back to 1880). Data shows that the Arctic temperature increases are much bigger, relatively, than the rest of the globe. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) provides many water-related products derived from data acquired by the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) instrument aboard the Global Change Observation Mission 1st-Water "SHIZUKU" (GCOM-W1) satellite. Two JAXA datasets used in this visualization are the 10-km daily sea ice concentration and the 10 km daily 89 GHz Brightness Temperature. Visualizers: Cindy Starr (lead), Trent L. Runaway Change in the Arctic? Extreme 2016 Temperatures. Presentation by Dr. James Overland (NOAA/PMEL) and Muyin Wang (JISAO/UW). A new Arctic surprise (unexpected magnitude of rapid change) was extensive record warm Arctic temperature extremes in January–April 2016, which repeated in fall-early winter 2016-7. In January, the Arctic-wide average temperature was 2.0° C above the previous positive record of 3.0° C above normal, with local January values in excess of 7° C above normal. Record sea ice extent losses were observed for all months of 2016 except during the summer. Sea ice multi-year (MY) fraction (amount of old thick ice) had a sharp drop between January 2016 and January 2017, and was 60% below the MY fraction during the early 2000s. Delayed sea ice freeze up in fall 2016 helped to maintain the warm temperatures, a clear example of Arctic specific feedback processes that amplified the rate of change. An open question is whether there will be continuing near future rapid Arctic changes from such surprises. This animation shows the progression of anomalous sea level heights (SLH) during the 2015-16 El Niño event. Higher than normal SLH's develop over the equatorial tropical eastern Pacific, corresponding to the area if higher sea surface temperatures. These higher heights correspond to a deeper thermocline (depth above which temperatures are more uniform) and thicker layer of warmer water which expands thus creating higher sea levels. East-west movement seen within this large region of warm water is an indication of large-scale oceanic Rossby and Kelvin waves. Many smaller scale features such as oceanic eddies are also seen in this animation. (Credit: NOAA/ESRL Physical Sciences Division) http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/

Two key climate change indicators have broken numerous records through the first half of 2016, according to NASA analyses of ground-based observations and satellite data. Each of the first six months of 2016 set a record as the warmest respective month globally in the modern temperature record, which dates to 1880. Meanwhile, five of the first six months set records for the smallest monthly Arctic sea ice extent since consistent satellite records began in 1979. NASA researchers are in the field this summer, collecting data to better understand our changing climate. The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a quasi-periodic fluctuation of ocean temperatures in the equatorial Pacific. The temperatures generally fluctuate between two states: warmer than normal central and eastern equatorial Pacific (El Niño) and cooler than normal central and eastern equatorial Pacific (La Niña). This animation illustrates the evolution of sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies (relative to the respective normal state) in the Pacific Ocean associated with the 2015 El Niño, the warm phase ENSO. SST anomalies reflect the heat content in the mixed layer (upper 50 meters). The reason Tenerife is so popular is because of the weather. It’s where us Brits go for our Winter sun. Yeah, I mean, it’s sunny pretty much all year round with lows in December, January, February time of about 15 degrees, which to be fair is a pretty good day in England, still. And highs of about 29 in July and August. But if you’re going to go into the sea, the best time is probably September and October, when the water’s about 24 degrees at its highest. Yep. So we went to Tenerife in November, when England was completely miserable and about zero degrees and Tenerife was about 23 to 25, so nice and warm but not too hot and sticky. Actually, where it is on the globe, cue globe, as you can see, it’s kind of…here. So you’ve got Africa and the Atlantic Ocean, meaning that all of these winds from the Atlantic Ocean bring a nice, thanks Jon, cool breeze, so it’s nice and fresh, for want of a better word. So Tenerife is an island of micro-climates. This means that you can go between the sometimes snow-capped volcano Teide and down in the south, where the hot beaches are, within the space of two hours. Now, if you are going to go up slightly higher, we’d recommend bringing a few layers because it does get kind of chilly in the evenings, the higher you go up into the mountains. Yep. But you’re more likely to be hot than you are cold, so make sure you look after yourself - bring suncream, some sunglasses, make sure you maybe bring a hat so that you can kind of keep the sun off your head and don’t get sunstroke and wreck your whole holiday. And drink lots of water! Not beer! Err, stay safe kids! Enjoy the sun…responsibly. So that’s our round-up of the weather in Tenerife. Hopefully that’s been useful to you. Yep, if you have any comments or anything, just chuck them in the comments section below. We’d love to hear from you. And don’t forget to subscribe. Yeah, thanks for watching :)

In this visualization, the daily Arctic sea ice and seasonal land cover change progress through time, from this year’s wintertime maximum extent on March 7, 2017, through Sept. 13, 2017 when the sea ice reached its annual minimum extent for the year. Kurumba Maldives resort presents this light hearted Maldives Weather video highlighting Maldives weather forecasts, month-by-month averages, patterns and seasons to help you plan your next Maldives island holiday. The Maldives weather offers year round temperatures of 29 degrees Celsius and average water temperatures of 25 degrees. Also in this video, it highlights dry season, monsoons periods, average hours of sunshine per day and average rainfall per month and what to do when it rains in the Maldives Islands and Resorts. Please do not miss the bloopers at the end of the video for a good laugh. The Maldives like anywhere in the world is facing changing in seasons and it is certainly becoming much harder to predict the weather. It is also said that the Maldives weather seasons are changing. The Maldives is located on the equator and as there is no mountain ranges, low weather patterns which cause storms tend to move past quite quickly. From our experience, we generally see only 3-5 weather events per year that last longer than 3 days. Maybe one 1 or 2 that last longer than 5 days. In the wetter months of the Maldives weather, we may only obtain 3 to 7 days with rain over the entire month. In that wet period, it may just be a few hours of storms or rain will clear away or it may be extended periods. Hence, a bit of luck is required. If you are coming in these months that have higher average rainfalls, then do except a few days of rainy weather over the week. a few rainy days could be some forced relaxation that you may need. Read a book. Watch a movie and order some room service. Look out for the Maldives resorts that offer activity and entertainment programs. Please give Muizz a thumbs up and subscribe to our Kurumba Maldives channel for more helpful videos. Download video: http://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/12306

여름철 남해 고수온 기간 10년마다 3.5일씩 증가 추세 While experiencing one of the hottest summers on record, we're not alarmed that sea temperatures have been staying warmer for much longer. But according to one research, the nation's southern waters have remained warm for nearly two weeks longer in recent years,... compared to some 3 decades ago. Oh Soo-young takes a closer look into this phenomenon. South Korea's southern waters have been growing hotter during the summer over the last three decades. That's according to a research team at the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology,... which found that the number of days from July to September,... of high sea surface temperatures in Korea's South Sea increased by three-point-five days,... every ten years. This correlates with the general rise in the world's atmospheric temperature-- hovering around nought-point-four to nought-point-five degrees Celsius above the long-term annual average this year. "Early in July, we had a low temperature but in the middle of the month, the atmospheric heatwave started. So, after that the ocean began to warm and became even hotter than 30 degrees. So it was an extremely hot temperature compared to the average year." Based on data from 1982 to 2017,... the research team believes the longer period of warm sea temperatures is mainly due to the impact of climate change,... and also the inflow of waters from the northwest Pacific. It noted how sea surface levels in the southern waters weren't as high as expected in 1994,... when Korea experienced one of its hottest summers on record. Meanwhile, in 2001, sea temperatures peaked when the northwest Pacific Ocean was relatively warmer,... despite weaker atmospheric pressure. The research team says Korea's seas are likely to see even more days of hot surface temperatures each year, largely due to the greenhouse effect,... but more research is needed to determine and limit the potential damage of the rising sea temperatures. A movie of weather across the globe during November of 2018. Our series of monthly weather videos shows a combination of infrared imagery from the geostationary and polar-orbiting satellites of EUMETSAT, NOAA, the CMA and the JMA which, together, continuously observe the Earth's surface 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This data is used to help forecasters predict weather patterns and warn citizens of adverse weather conditions, hours and sometimes days in advance. Our colleagues at Meteofrance combine imagery from the satellite data into half-hourly segments, which EUMETSAT processes to produce this animation. To see a full view of the Earth from the last hours, as seen by Meteosat-10, check out our web page at: http://bit.ly/1k4RozO

Arctic sea ice extent ebbs and flows with the seasons. During the summer months, the ice melts and the edge recedes northward, usually reaching its annual minimum sometime in September. The ice extent is shaped by a variety of factors, including warmer temperatures, storms, and changes in the ocean, which makes it difficult to predict. Sea ice plays an important role in maintaining Earths temperature, so predicting how the ice extent might change helps us understand the warming climate. Scientists have developed a new model to predict the sea ice minimum extent, using historical measurements and real-time satellite data. The model can begin predictions up to six months before the predicted minimum and continue to improve each day.
