Innovation - Students of Product Design Episode1

12:49
This series 'Students of Product Design' is aimed at anyone interested in the product design process. This first episode looks at innovation, how to innovate and how simply changing the structure of the brief can impact on how innovative you can be. This series won't just talk about stuff, the plan is to share with you as many of the things I have learnt in the last 15 years (or so..) as possible through each stage of the design process to help you become far better designers than I can ever be. I'll be looking at research, sketching, model making, portfolios and a whole load of other things. I often think of youtube as a speed learning tool. Have you ever seen the Matrix films where Neo first learns martial arts by uploading a programme to his head or Trinity learns to fly a helicopter in minutes, that's how I see Youtube, Youtube is our version of the Matrix. So this series which is primarily aimed at students studying industrial design, product design or design engineering in university is designed to do just that, give you a knowledge boost to hopefully make your projects, designs, presentations and portfolio a lot better to improve your chances of getting a position as a designer, or your projects if you want to start your own company, anything related to design. I also hope with the content, that everyone will be able to take something away from it as many of the tips I'll give over the course of this series will be applicable to lots of areas of life. There's just isn't enough out there on product design, compared to say cookery shows it's very under provisioned and so I'm trying to redress the balance. I have a lot more planned, so please be patient, stay tuned and follow me, so that you can be alerted to when the next video is launched. www.producttank.co.uk

Presentations - Students of Product Design Episode 7

22:28
Students of product design episode 7 covers how to give a concept design presentation to a small group, but the techniques can be used for presentations to much larger audiences and will also help with portfolio presentations. A concept design presentation doesn't begin when you sit down in front of the client with a set of drawings, or when you're preparing those drawings a week before. It starts the moment you first meet the client, you need to build relationships. One key to this is to just be interested in the client, people are interesting and with just about everything in life things always go far better if you show you're interested in them. I once saw a quote by Bill Nye, 'Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don't'. So before the presentation, keep talking to your main contact, keep them updated with progress, be interested in what they're up to and their suggestions, good design, good relationships, good business is about continuous communication. The presentation doesn't end once you have shown the last concepts either. You need to close the presentation, by managing expectations, letting the client know when you will need a response to hit the next deadline, helping the client reach an informed decision, agreeing the next stage etc. With any set of concepts, you'll have your favourite, often there's one that's stronger than the others, but any one of the designs a client chooses will be a good outcome, because they will be one of you or your teams designs, you can't loose, unless the client doesn't like any of them. If theres a design you're presenting that you really don't want them to choose, why is it in your presentation. Unless you have to present a series of concepts that a group of people came up with. Then there may be one you don't like, because we all like different things, but as long as it answers the brief, doesn't create confusion or you can't give a strong argument for leaving it out, then it should be included it in your presentation, to give the client breadth of choice. This is important to consider when you work in a team and also a good argument if it is your design that another member is trying to exclude. There are masses of useful links out there to help so as promised in the video, here are some links not necessarily specific to product design which I like and think will be useful: http://muledesign.com/2014/09/13-ways-designers-screw-up-client-presentations https://99designs.com/designer-blog/2013/03/19/5-tips-on-how-to-prepare-a-design-presentation/ http://www.richardbaird.co.uk/2012/05/10/the-designers-guide-to-presentation/ http://www.proedgeskills.com/Presentation_Skills_Articles/difficult_questions.htm This is a good link to how to deal with clients who want to feature creep: https://community.uservoice.com/blog/when-to-build-requested-feature/ In the video I briefly cover how to calm nerves and one relaxation technique that has really helped me, relaxing my shoulders. This is a good link to more relaxation techniques and ways to deal with nerves. http://www.inc.com/larry-kim/15-power-up-tips-to-make-you-a-better-presenter.html http://www.skillsyouneed.com/present/presentation-nerves.html http://lifehacker.com/how-to-calm-your-nerves-before-making-a-terrifying-spee-1677504967 Finally if you have specific questions not answered by a Google search, then you can always post a question on the forums at core77.com to get advice from industry professionals. I hope you enjoy 'Students of Product Design Episode 7' and it helps when you have to give a concept design presentation. More of my work is here: www.producttank.co.uk

The Design Thinking Process

03:57
Crash Course: https://dschool.stanford.edu/resources/virtual-crash-course-video Guide for Facilitators: https://dschool.stanford.edu/resources/gear-up-how-to-kick-off-a-crash-course Design Thinking is a 5-step process to come up with meaningful ideas that solve real problems for a particular group of people. The process is taught in top design and business schools around the world. It has brought many businesses lots of happy customers and helped entrepreneurs from all around the world, to solve problems with innovative new solutions. Step 1: Empathize The purpose of step one is to conduct interviews that give you an idea about what people really care about. We need to empathize with their situation. For example, if you want to help old people, you might find that they want to keep the ability to walk around. In your conversations, they might share with you different ways they can do that. Later into the interview you'll want to dig a little deeper, look for personal stories or situations where things became difficult. Ideally, you redo the process with many people with the same problem. Step 2: Define the Problem Looking at the interviews, you can now understand the actual needs that people are trying to fulfill with certain activities. One way to do that is to underline the verbs or activities that the people mentioned when talking about their problems: like going for a walk, meeting old friends for tea, or simply going grocery shopping around the corner store. You might realize it's not so much about going out, but more about staying in touch. After your analysis, formulate a problem statement: “Some elderly are afraid to be lonely. The want to stay connected.” Step 3: Ideate Now focus only on the problem statement and come up with ideas that solve the problem. The point is not to get a perfect idea, but rather to come up with as many ideas: like unique virtual reality experiences, senior friendly hover boards or a modified pushcart. Whatever it is, sketch up your best ideas and show them to the people you are trying to help, so you get their feedback. Step 4: Prototype Now take a moment to reflect on what you have learned from your conversations about the different ideas. Ask yourself, how does your idea fit in the context of people's actual lives. Your solution could be a combination of a new idea and what is already being used. Then connect the dots, sketch up your final solution and go build a real prototype that's just good enough to be tested. Step 5: Test Now test your prototype with actual users. Don't defend your idea in case people don't like it, the point is to learn what works and what didn't, so any feedback is great. Then go back to ideation or prototyping and apply your learning. Repeat the process until you have a prototype that works and solves the real problem. Now you are ready to change the world or open shop. To experience design thinking first hand, do the free virtual design thinking crash course from Stanford’s D-School right now. You will learn to design a new gift giving experience. Find the link and a guide for facilitators in the description below. The user centred design process

07:24
The user centred design process is a project approach that puts the user of a site at the centre of its design and development. This guarantees that the site will be easy to use and focuses the designer on providing a better experience for real customer needs. There are 4 stages that include many different tools and techniques to help you along the way. With every business solving a problem at it’s core, the main idea of UCD is to achieve a greater understanding of the problem by including the customer in the design process early and empowering you with various research techniques. Using this information you can propose a solution that is simple to use, understand and have the security that any problems with the design are fixed along the way through constant testing. This is an iterative process meaning that once the process is completed a new cycle can begin using the new data to kick start the process again. The first phase of the UCD is the Research & Analysis section, this is where we try to really understand who we are designing for. I would argue that this is the most important piece of the whole design process because there are various activities here that can really help you during the rest of the project. Creating Personas can bring to life your users and help you understand their tasks better. You can really include some detailed descriptions here using any data that you have gathered on your customers. I really like the website YouGov profiles at today.yougov.com/profileslite here you can type in any brand, person or thing and the system compiles a profile from their stored data on over 150,000 accounts to give you a great description of your user. It’s worth a try as the free data is really good. Asking users questions through surveys can gather some useful information. It’s really useful when customers just tell your their expectations. Survey Monkey is my go-to tool for surveys as they have a great feature where you can select certain demographics and the system will send out your survey and get results for your desired number of participants. This comes at a fee but is well worth it if you work in a company and don’t have any current customers to send the survey to. Another important task during the research phase is to perform interviews with colleagues and stakeholders on the project. This really makes sure that you are meeting all the business requirements and everyone really feels like they are part of the design process from the beginning. I found this a great thing to do at the start of the project to integrate myself into the team and make everyone else feel valued. Once we have a deeper insight into the problems our users are facing we can get going on the ideation phase of the project. This is where we can really have some fun and get creative. But before we actually start sketching page designs it’s really important that we take a look holistically at the entire journey that the customer will go on when using our product or service. Most of the time we are designing within a system and it’s essential to have an understanding of how everything fits together. When we understand the machine we can then design the individual parts with greater precision. Stories have defined our world, they have been with us since early human history and can convey a message that touches our soul. To tell our user's story we are going to use a process called customer journey mapping. This is a technique where we illustrate the entire process we are designing for. How you illustrate this is up to you, it could be simple text or it could be a wonderful colour illustration. I found that the bigger the better. When I was working in a global company we had a large industrial printer and I had the customer journey map printed off about 10 foot long and stuck up on the wall of the office. This really is a great way to get the whole team involved, just watch the printing bill!

Inspiration and a clear vision are the starting points for creative tasks. It's on a blank sheet of paper that they first acquire form, solely through a pen and the hand that guides it. The sketch is the most emotional form of an idea. This is why the designers first work out their ideas exclusively with a pen and paper. The concern here is not feasibility. Instead, the sketch is intended to bring life to the character of the model, which then remains the guiding image throughout the design process.

The 6 Stages of a Web Design Project - UX Design Principles

03:46
UX Designer Kieron Woodhouse talks through the six stages all businesses should go through when launching a new website. Designing a website can be a long process, but it doesn't have to be. It really comes down with what you want to achieve with the website. If you're just showcasing your product or service, then it doesn't need to be a large, arduous process. Whereas, if this is a key part of the service you are offering, and it's a platform you are building online, then it can be a big project so it does depend on what you are building. Step 1: The biggest key to having a successful website is to have a detailed spec. Step 2: Wireframes help you understand the content thats going to be on that page, the structure, the user flow, and how the sites going to work without the glossy finish of the design. Step 3: The look and feel is personal to the business, the brand values need to be clear otherwise the design can go completely wrong. Step 4: The development stage is simply where you make the design come to life. Step 5: There's testing to see: if a feature of the spec works, usability testing, also improving. Step 6: Launch! product design rendering and sketching by product tank

06:31
This is a product design sketching and rendering tutorial that I've put together for industrial design students. Sketching is something that I know I should do more of, but we're all busy people, so I've picked up a few drawing and rendering tips along the way to make things faster and look better especially for those of us who know we are not as good as we should be. I would like to thank Ben Davies from Rodd Industrial Design for teaching me most of this stuff, it was a long time ago, but - credit where its due. In this video I set out how product design presentation sheets used to be created using pen and marker techniques, which is making a come back at the moment. I then look at the common mistakes we all make from time to time and how to a few simple things will vastly improve the look of your presentation sheets. Finally I focus on how to make a very professional looking product design presentation sheet in a short space of time using Photoshop and then show that even if you prefer to use drawing programs or apps on your tablet or computer, the process is very much the same. I hope you enjoy the video and if interested in seeing more, hit subscribe, because more good stuff is on its way.
