The Art of Product Management with Sachin Rekhi (ENG’05 W’05)

01:07:06
Product managers drive the vision, strategy, design, and execution of their product. While one can often quickly comprehend the basic responsibilities of the role, mastering each of these dimensions is truly an art form that one is constantly honing. In this presentation I'll share my lessons learned over the last decade as a product manager in Silicon Valley on the art behind each of these dimensions of product management. Sachin Rekhi is a serial entrepreneur and product leader who has spent the last decade developing innovative products in Silicon Valley. Sachin most recently founded Connected, a professional contact manager that was acquired by LinkedIn in 2011 and re-launched as LinkedIn Contacts. He went on become head of product for LinkedIn Sales Navigator, LinkedIn's flagship offering for sales professionals. Prior to Connected, Sachin founded Anywhere.FM, a web music player that allowed users to upload, play, and discover music online, which was acquired by imeem in 2008. Sachin started his career at Microsoft as a product lead on Visual Studio, Microsoft's developer tools platform. Sachin recently left LinkedIn and has been advising early-stage startups on product strategy, design, and growth.

Implementing better feedback loops for strategic product development

20:03
Drowning in Feedback? How to Instrumentalize Customer Intelligence to Facilitate Strategic Decision Making. Product organizations rely on constant customer feedback to determine their roadmaps, products and features. However, collecting and processing customer feedback in large and medium-sized organizations can be challenging. Information silos, outdated documents, recency bias, format conflicts, content repositories structures, slow processing and handover times, product taxonomies, even just a common understanding on language can lead to breakdowns on how to operationalize customer feedback consumption. Today, we have access to products and services solely focused on tackling this problem. However, a product alone cannot fully influence the organizational and cultural challenges that are often a hurdle when dealing with cross-organizational collaborative issues. We want to share our story of going through two separate ‘customer feedback management’ product implementations and highlight the lessons learned along the way. Finally we want to introduce our “Customer Intelligence Pipeline”, a combination of right tooling, internal processes, and strategic vision, that now leads our product organization. Daniel is a Product and Research Manager focused on leveraging research to help organisations build great products. A true inter-disciplinarist, Daniel was officially trained in Computer Systems Engineering at the Universidad de las Americas Puebla in Mexico, where he also worked as a Software Engineer and eventually Program Manager at IBM. He pursued graduate education at Stanford University, where he focused on Human-Computer-Interaction and Design, where he developed a keen interest in research, design thinking, lean processes, and product discovery. While in California, he also joined Apple as an intern, helping design their developers portal and submitting a proposal for a whole new product for self-ebook authoring. He later joined Inria and Universite Paris-Saclay, where he spent 3 years as a PhD candidate in HCI, researching the use of communication technologies between intimate social circles. With hands-on experience in engineering, management, research, and design, Daniel now focuses on building bridges between organisations, helping teams keep focus on the big picture, and making visible how everyone contributes to building great experiences for customers. This is a very complicated world. It’s a very noisy world. And we’re not going to get a chance to get people to remember much about us. No company is! And so, we have to be really clear on what we want them to know about us. Now Apple, fortunately, is one of half-a-dozen best brands in the whole world. Right up there with Nike, Disney, Coke, Sony — it is one of the greats of the greats. Not just in this country, but all around the globe. But even a great brand needs investment and caring if it’s going to retain its relevance and vitality. And the Apple brand has clearly suffered from neglect in this area in the last few years. And we need to bring it back! The way to do that is NOT to talk about speeds and fees. It’s NOT to talk about bits and mega-hertz. It’s NOT to talk about why we are better than Windows. The dairy industry tried for 20 years to convince you that milk was good for you. It’s a lie, but they tried anyway. And the sales were falling. And then they tried “Got milk” and the sales went up. “Got milk” wasn’t even talking about the product. In fact, it focuses on the absence of the product. But the best example of all, and one of the greatest jobs of marketing that the universe has ever seen, is Nike. Remember, Nike sells a commodity. They sell shoes!!! And yet, when you think of Nike you feel something different than a shoe company. In their ads, as you know, they don’t ever talk about the product. They don’t ever tell you about their air soles and why they are better than Reebok’s air soles. What does Nike do in their advertising? They honor great athletes. And they honor great athletics. That’s who they are, that’s what they are about! Apple spends a fortune on advertising — you’d never know it….you’d never know it! So…when I got here, Apple just fired their agency and there was a competition with 23 agencies that…you know…four years from now we would pick one. And we blew that up and we hired Chiat\Day, the ad agency that I was fortunate enough to work with years ago and created some award winning work including the commercial voted the best ad ever made, 1984 (by Advertising Professionals). And…we started working about eight weeks ago, and the question we asked was, “Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it that we stand for…where do we fit in this world?” And what we’re about isn’t making boxes for people to get their jobs done — although we do that well. We do that better than almost anybody, in some cases. But Apple is about something more than that! Apple at the core…its core value — is that, we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better. That’s what we believe! And we have had the opportunity to work with people like that. We’ve had the opportunity to work with people like you; with software developers, with customers, who have done it. In some big, and some small ways. And we believe that, in this world, people can change it for the better. And that those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones that actually do! And so, what we’re going to do in our first brand marketing campaign in several years, is to get back to that core value! A lot of things have changed. The market is in a total different place than where it was a decade ago. And Apple is totally different — and Apple’s place in it is totally different. And believe me, the products, and the distribution strategy, and the manufacturing are totally different…and we understand that. But values and core values — those things shouldn’t change. The things that Apple believed in at its core, are the same things Apple really stands for today. Principles of Good Strategic Portfolio Management

01:08:29
Strategic portfolio management differs greatly from "operational" portfolio management. It concentrates on selecting the best projects to develop, prioritizing allocation of resources, and on producing the highest possible economic value throughout the development process. Decision making is complicated by risks and uncertainty around technical, timing, cost and commercialization. Stemming from decision analysis, coupled with the need to cope with the real world, processes and tools have steadily developed to support quality decision making around R&D, New Product Development and Innovation strategic portfolio management. During this webinar, David Matheson, President and CEO of SmartOrg, draws on his considerable experience helping companies create value from their strategic portfolios, highlighting the "Top Four Must-Do Areas of Innovation Practice" that can drive the value of your project/product portfolio. Strategic Project Management

05:53
Why do so many startups fail? Why are there startup eco-systems? Looking deeper, the one thing that will move needle on startup success is focused execution. We mined our experience in new product development and learnings from thought leaders in lean startup. From this study Entroids – the strategic product development platform was born. Strategic project management is continuously aligning team actions to the most important strategic needs. We developed the THINK-PLAN-DO framework for executing what is important rather than chasing urgent fires. We set out to build Entroids the only strategic project management platform for technology and hardware product development. Vijay is the planner and a fiery task master, Chandra is the creative thinker and dreamer. Entroids was not a reality until we roped in Vamsi, the stoic IT genius. THINK-PLAN-DO is a powerful platform for focused product development and project execution. But we like to take it further with analytics and intelligence to become the GPS for your startup execution.

√ Strategic Role of Operations Management | Business Studies

14:10
#iitutor #BusinessStudies #OperationProcess https://www.iitutor.com Strategic means affecting all business functions. The strategic role of operations management is to contribute to the direction and plan of the business. The main goal of business is to minimise costs to maximise profits. A strategic role of operations is the management of costs. The different operations costs for a business are: Input costs, Labour costs, Processing costs, Inventory costs, Quality management. • Cost leadership aims to have the lowest costs and be the most prices competitive in the market. The business must still be profitable. Operations Management therefore must find ways to reduce costs in production. Example: Bunnings. A business can cut costs by increasing the scale/size of the business. How? By buying in bulk, the business is able to negotiate lower costs per unit. Goods/service differentiation: Tangible – they can be seen and touched. Tend to be standardised. Can be owned and transferred between people. Can take considerable time between production and consumption. Easy to determine costs by calculating inputs and adding margin. Services: Intangible. Generally customised. Cannot be owned. Production and consumption occurs at the same time. The value of a service depends on what the consumer is prepared to pay. Product Differentiation. Operations must find a way to distinguish their products from their competitors. This gives them a competitive advantage. This will differ between goods and services. Product Differentiation: Goods. Varying the actual product features. Operations search for ways to make their product features attractive to the consumer. Varying product quality. Making a low quality alternative to attract a different group of consumers. Varying the augmented features. This refers to add-ons or additional benefits. Product Differentiation: Services. Varying the amount of time spent on a service. Example: Hair salons. Varying the level of expertise brought to a service. Some service providers will offer a higher level of expertise. Varying the qualifications and experience of the service provider. This can be an important factor when consumers are choosing their service provider. Varying the quality of materials/ technology used in service delivery. Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM). Medical technologies. Cross Branding: Operations may choose to offer consumers added benefits from a cross-branding arrangement.

Who is a Product Manager and What do they do? [Career Insights]

07:54
The role of a product manager is crucial but also one of the least understood ones. What does a product manager really do? Is he more of a data analyst? Or someone who deals with the tech aspects of product, leading the team of engineers? Or does the product manager largely concern himself/herself with user experience, design or the overall business strategy? Mind-boggling isn't it? No wonder the role is difficult to understand for most. In this video, Ravijot Chugh, Co-Founder and Product Head at UpGrad, explains in detail the various responsibilities a Product Manager has, and that you need to execute to the best of your ability to be a good PM. If you want to bag one among the thousands of highly coveted openings for Product Managers between now and 2020 (only to grow exponentially even after), you need to start upgrading your existing skills and mastering these key skills. Product Managers are often referred to as mini-CEOs of the product. This is why, at tech companies, startups and large MNCs that are now diversifying, alike, the role of Product Managers is lucrative and one of the most important in the organization. Startups must move fast. So much of what makes a successful startup is working efficiently and relentlessly. Yet there is nothing more wasteful than working on the wrong things. Many startups fail because they aren't working on the right things. In this talk at the 7CTOs Conference in November 2017, I cover the tools and strategies you can employ to ensure you're working on the right features and ensuring the user's voice is loud and clear. Do you need help streamlining your product development process? Is your business struggling to scale with your growth? I’m now doing full-time strategic consulting and fractional CTO work. Strategic Innovation and the Intellectual Property Rights

01:02:20
One of the nation's premier authorities on intellectual property strategy, Marshall Phelps discusses his views on the value of IP in technological progress, economic development and individual and small business entrepreneurship. His remarks reviews the historical development of patent policy in the United States, discusses the current era of open innovation and the benefits of collaboration, and compares IP strategies that other countries like China and Korea have successfully employed to aid in their economic development. Marshall touches on the paradigm shift that occurred at Microsoft toward institutionalized IP collaboration and cooperation under his leadership, and introduces the new book he co-authored, Burning the Ships: Intellectual Property and the Transformation of Microsoft, which provides a detailed and candid account of what one analyst has called "the biggest change Microsoft has undergone since it became a multinational company."

How product design can change the world | Christiaan Maats | TEDxUniversityofGroningen

13:07
Christiaan Maats is a designer and entrepreneur who challenges the way we look at product design. Going beyond form and function he shows us how products carry deeper layers of meaning and how those layers can connect us to a bigger reality. In this Talk, Christiaan Maats explains how meaningful products can embody the change we want to see in the world and sheds light on his own vision of a circular society that integrates industrial society with its natural roots. Christiaan Maats was born and raised in Groningen, though he studied Industrial Design Engineering at Technical University in Delft. His keen interest in the psychology behind product- and brand experience took him to Sydney, Australia where he conducted a case study titled “Storytelling through Product Design”. Good product design is good storytelling, according to Christiaan. His creation of the world’s first biodegradable shoes that bloom is a perfect example of his philosophy. Christiaan considers himself a practical idealist. He is driven by his passion for innovation and creating products and brands that inspire a better future by making you smile, think and wonder. His refreshing ideas on sustainable innovation disrupt the status quo. Christiaan's diverse background and enthusiasm are great ingredients for an inspiring TEDx Talk that focuses on the society of the future and how to get there. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Pathway to Product Development

Promoting Successful Translational Research: http://launchpad.ucsf.edu. Dr. Hobart Harris, Professor and Chief of General Surgery at UC San Francisco, is a pioneering surgeon who treats patients with complicated and often life-threatening conditions in the Complex Abdominal Surgery Program. In his efforts to develop a ground-breaking technology that will transform the long-term outcome of abdominal surgeries, he focused initially on the science, and assumed that the positive results would naturally translate to the commercialization of his innovation. He quickly discovered that the product development process hinges on many key elements that go beyond scientific proof, including intellectual property, regulatory strategy and product reimbursement. LaunchPad is an online resource designed to highlight the experiences and accomplishments of translational researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and to support them in their efforts to develop beneficial medical products. LaunchPad features videos of investigators, administrators and industry experts sharing their experiences working through five keys to successful translational research—unmet needs, target product profile, collaboration, development plan and organizational support, as well as other resources for researchers. LaunchPad is a project of the Early Translational Research (ETR) program of UCSF's Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) - grant Number UL1 TR000004.
