How To Install a Herringbone Wood Floor

They are also cut to various lengths so that your final floor pattern is random and not purposefully repeated. Herringbone floors are meant to be laid in a pattern so the irregular pieces of flooring have to be modified. After doing the rough math of our entryway's square footage, I figured out that I would need over 200 pieces of flooring cut to the same length. I opened some remaining boxes of flooring and used my miter saw to cut the giant pile of pieces. Because of the nature of herringbone floors and the construction of tongue and groove flooring, I wasn't don't modifying these pieces yet. Normally, when you lay tongue and groove flooring, the tongue fits inside of the groove the whole length of the piece as well the sides. In our case I had to cut each piece the same length resulting in only groove remaining one side. Because the pieces would be paid out in 90-degree butt joints, I had to add a groove to the other side. Think of it like this, one piece of flooring would lead with a tongue and another piece would butt up against the front corner. This had to be a groove or the straight cut from the miter saw would lock the pieces into place. Conversely, behind that 90-degree segment would be the original long grooves. In order to get another row of flooring to join up with those, I had to cut splines that would fit into both grooves. So yes, I had more repetitive cutting to do. To match the aesthetic of the rest of the floor, I had to add a small micro-bevel to the freshly cut end. I did this by setting up a chamfering bit in my router table and carefully passing each end over the tiny exposed cutter. With all of the flooring cut and all of the splines ready, I had to start laying the pattern. I cut a simple plywood template to help me get the initial row of 90-degree segments and got to work. I used my flooring nailer to secure the pieces in place and got to work. This process took a while longer than laying the traditional flooring because there were so many small pieces. I also had to keep checking the squareness of my work so that the 90-degree would be consistent throughout. I covered a majority of the floor with the herringbone flooring but as I approached the door ways, I had to fill in the small gaps with some custom cut pieces. It was really coming together and I was surprised by how nice it looked. When I set out on the project, I wasn't quite sure how I would tie this new floor pattern into the rest of traditional flooring. After looking at the entryway itself, I could see the it had pretty clearly defined boundaries. There is a French door leading to the living room and a door way leading to the adjoining room. My wife and I decided that it would look best to just add a border around the herringbone flooring to match the confines of the room. This way, I could match the rest of the flooring seamlessly and give the entryway some definition. To add this two-board thick border, I had to cut off the pointy bits of herringbone that stuck out on the sides. This solution seemed pretty straight-forward until I had to actually cut the pieces. I would have to use the circular saw for this extremely crucial cut; a tool that is notoriously sloppy. If my cut wasn't straight the boards wouldn't fit, if was too wide, there would be an ugly gap. I scribed my line very carefully and used my rip track to cut a perfect line in the floor. Success! I laid in the border pieces and had to cut off the lower lip of the grooves in some cases to get them to fit. Because tongue and groove requires you build the floor upon itself successively, I couldn't just drop a piece down into an existing space. So by cutting off the lower lip I could anchor the tongue in place and sit the upper lip of the groove on the next tongue. Of course this wasn't that secure, so I used some nails to hold those key pieces down to the subfloor.

Florence conveys its precious nature through its stunning style, its cultural qualities, its original and recognisable design, and through the combination of the finest and most prestigious materials such as mahogany stained wood, mirrored glass and classic marbles (these reflect refined workmanship and great appeal, with bas-reliefs that recall artisan craftsmanship that is now hard to find). All the materials, even though traditional, are re-introduced in a highly contemporary look.

How to install a simple subway tile kitchen backsplash

10:07
How to install a simple subway tile kitchen backsplash. Depending on the tile that is to be installed, and where it will be installed, it is sometimes appropriate to use mastic as an adhesive for the tile. When installing tile in a wet area such as a shower stall, mastic is not to be used, instead use a thinset mortar adhesive in areas that will be exposed to water. When using mastic to install subway tiles, ledger boards or bracing of the tile to prevent them from sliding down, will more than likely not be required. Mastic usually will hold a tile in place, unless the tile is very heavy. Mastic is a premixed adhesive that is sold in a bucket and is not thinset, and is not to be used in wet areas. A kitchen backsplash such as the one in this video is an instant where mastic is suitable. Use the correct size trowel to spread your mastic, the mastic bucket will have a description and a guide to help in the selection of the trowel for you tile. Once you have started to install your tile, always check to confirm that the coverage of adhesive on the back of the tile is adequate. Subway tiles more often than not will have automatic spacers on them; this will make it possible to just place a tile on to the next tile without the use of any other spaces. This is not always the case so check your tile before starting the installation. Once the tile is installed allow the mastic to set the appropriate amount of time before grouting. All tile installed by Sal DiBlasi, Elite-tile Company, in the Boston North Shore area. Trowel and Error - How to Set Tile the Right Way

06:36
How to install tile the right way! Learn NTCA-approved, correct trowel techniques to set large format tile and how to create a stronger bond between the tile and the substrate. Prevent crack transmission, lippage, tile breakage and other costly tile installation repairs. Tile and stone are very durable materials that can and should last a lifetime. When tiles break, more often than not, it’s due to issues with the substrate or the installation method. The way you trowel mortar for setting tile makes a big difference. Porcelain tiles, in particular, can withstand extra heavy service conditions. It takes a lot of impact or point load to cause bond loss when installed correctly over a sound substrate. The mortar under this tile was installed using the correct trowel technique. On the other hand, since tile is a hard and brittle finish or a veneer, unsupported space under the tiles actually creates weak spots. That same Porcelain tile may be easily damaged by the same impact, heavy loads and other causes. Spot bonding with mortar is not recommended to set tile. It may be easier to set tiles flat to each other during the installation, but it’s only a matter of time before just the slightest force causes a failure! The first tile was installed using the NTCA-recommended ANSI Standard - the others were not. Unfortunately, many tiles are being installed incorrectly, especially very large tiles, and this can result in costly breakage! You get the job done more quickly, but you can’t get proper mortar coverage. Air gets trapped with nowhere to go and leaves the tile unsupported. Swirling the mortar causes voids where the tile is not bonded to the substrate. These voids can result in cracked tile and bond failure under normal use but especially under point load or impact. In addition to impact and heavy loading, tiles set without proper mortar coverage are more likely to fail under many conditions! To name a few - substrate deflection; shrinkage or creep; thermal expansion in high temperatures; and freeze/thaw applications. A lack of perimeter and other movement joints affects well bonded tile so imagine when half - or even less - of a tile is adhered. According to the American National Standards Institute and the TCNA Handbook, tile requires a minimum of 80% mortar coverage in interior applications -- 95% for exteriors and wet environments. Natural stone tile requires 95% coverage in all areas. During the manufacturing process of most large tiles, the center tends to dome or warp upward. This warpage requires more mortar to be used and air is even less likely to be removed when the mortar is swirled. Flatter substrates are also required to successfully set large format tiles as they cover a much larger area. According to TCNA and ANSI guidelines, variations in floor flatness should not exceed 1/4” in 10 feet. When working with large format tile, a tile with any side 15 inches or longer, there is even less tolerance. Variation is limited to 1/8” in 10 feet and no more than 1/16” in 24 inches. The key to successful coverage is “Playing It Straight!” - combing the mortar in straight lines. Trowel ridges running in straight lines are much easier to collapse. They assist with air removal to maximize mortar coverage and ensure a strong bond to the tile and substrate. The first is to “key in” a coat of mortar into the substrate with the flat side of the trowel. Then, add more mortar to the substrate and comb the mortar in straight lines, all going in one direction. Combing the trowel ridges in straight lines provides better distribution of the mortar. With rectangular tile, trowel ridges should go across the short direction of the tile. This allows better air release when you bed the tile. Be careful not to leave any voids along chalk lines or between tiles. Use a trowel that will help you achieve continuous minimum 3/32” coverage. Larger tiles most often require deeper trowels. For large format tile, glass tile, natural stone or any tile set on exterior surfaces, “backbuttering” the tile is recommended. Use the flat side of the trowel to get an even coat of mortar and fill all the spaces in the surface. To finish, set the tile firmly, and move it backward and forward across the trowel ridges about 1/8 to ¼ inch. Move the tile only in one direction, perpendicular to the ridges, without moving in the opposite direction or twisting the tile. When you first start setting and then periodically through the installation, remove a tile and check for coverage. Ridges should be collapsed, and you don’t want the tile or the substrate to be missing mortar. Straight trowel ridges collapse with back and forth motion to eliminate voids. You will get a much stronger bond with complete mortar coverage. And remember - the larger the trowel, the more back and forth movement is needed. “Play it Straight!” and always use the NTCA-recommended tile setting method!

What Is The Best Flooring ?

Instagram https://instagram.com/homerenovisionDIY Our Website: https://www.HomeRenovisionDIY.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/homerenovisiondiy/?nr Twitter: https://twitter.com/renodiy In this video we will be showing different techniques for different types of flooring. Not all floors are installed the same and some require special tools for a professional result. click laminate for instance requires to be cut outside or the use of a special compression cutting tool that is hardly ever talked about. This product ideal for bedrooms and basements that require a low cost finishing. The other style of laminate is a luxury product with a long life span and a locking system for the joints that require it to be hammered together to secure the lock. Most people think this install is incorrect since they have never installed it before or never take the time to learn how to lock it. This faulty installation results in the board separating over time and huge inconvenience. this product will perform well in every area of your home but I would not suggest using it in entry areas kitchens or bathrooms. Vinyl plank is similar to luxury laminate in that they too have a lock together system. Be careful though not all vinyl products are the same and the big box stores carry products with entirely different locking systems. This product can be used in every area of your home since it does not expand and contract and is impervious to water. it can be a low cost solution or a high end finish that is warm on the feet in a basement. The last flooring system is hardwood. This video shows how to install 3/4 solid hardwood and all the tricks that go with it. Please be careful when doing your own project as there are many different types of construction out there and some require a paper between sud floor and hardwood and some require a vapor barrier. This is a perfect solution for homes that require high end finishes. it can be used in a kitchen or a powder room but not recommended in a bathroom. careful product handling before and during installation is required to avoid tragic results. It also will expand and contract leaving gaps if the home is not conditioned well or has no humidity controls. As with all things keep in mind the building code in your area. it changes from state to state due to best practices for your weather conditions and climate. How to Tile a Bathroom Floor with Wickes

12:45
Our How to Tile a Bathroom Floor will give you all the help and advice you’ll need to do this job well. There’s even advice on how to tile around a toilet. Subscribe to the Wickes here: http://bit.ly/1WHJIIr In this step-by-step video, you’ll learn how to tile a bathroom floor. From measuring and marking out the floor, evenly spacing your tiles and ensuring they’re symmetrical right through to grouting and applying sealant, we’ve broken down each stage of the process so it’s easy to digest. Follow these instructions and you’ll end up with a tiled floor that’s water-tight, level and looks great. Preparation & planning If you have a concrete floor, you can tile directly onto it. Timber floors needs to be strengthened with exterior-grade plywood which has been primed before tiling can begin. Tiles always need to be laid onto clean, dry and level surfaces, therefore sand and clean as necessary in both cases. Check whether your tiles need sealing, too. Aftercare After finishing your tiling project, use a grout protector spray to stop penetration by water, dirt, oil, grease and lime scale. Using this product will help to prolong the life of your grout and keep the area easy to clean. Getting the job done - hints & tips Make sure all surfaces are prepared before tiling. Porous surfaces should be prepared with primer before tiling. Always make sure your grout and adhesive is in date if you're using product which has been left over from another project. Safety Before screwing battens into the floor, always check for pipes and wires which may be under the floor. If there are pipes or wires under the floor where you are intending to screw down battens, use pencil lines to guide your tiling.
