Why are ships still used for cargo transport when air travel is much faster? CargoshipsvsCargoplanes

Have you ever wondered why we still use ships for cargo transport despite another much faster mode of travel, air, being available? A ship could take days if not weeks or months to reach its destination whereas for an airplane it’s just a matter of hours. cargo ship vs cargo plane air freight vs sea freight cost in the context of distribution ocean shipping is faster than air freight disadvantages of air freight Cargo Container Ship wiki Air cargo wiki Social media handles: https://www.instagram.com/curiousplanetlife/ https://twitter.com/curious_planet_ https://www.facebook.com/Curious-planet-482779305423814/ Reference https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cargo_ship https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Container_ship https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty-foot_equivalent_unit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MSC_Oscar https://www.slideshare.net/YSFSHIPPING/modes-of-transport-in-logistics-12555636 http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/12765981.Scotland_to_China_and_back_again_____cod_apos_s_10_000_mile_trip_to_your_table/ Map https://maps.google.com/ Icons Icon made by http://www.freepik.com/ from http://www.flaticon.com Icon made by http://www.flaticon.com/authors/madebyoliver from http://www.flaticon.com Icon made by http://www.flaticon.com/authors/nikita-golubev from http://www.flaticon.com Icon made by http://www.flaticon.com/authors/darius-dan from http://www.flaticon.com Icon made by http://www.flaticon.com/authors/pixel-buddha from http://www.flaticon.com https://pixabay.com/en/world-earth-planet-continents-154527/ Images https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Maersk_shipping_container.jpeg Shipping container sculpture in front of Auckland skyline https://www.flickr.com/photos/dcoetzee/7464092432 by https://www.flickr.com/photos/dcoetzee/ https://www.pexels.com/photo/construction-site-container-crane-pier-259945/ kees torn (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MSC_Oscar_(ship,_2014)_002.jpg), „MSC Oscar (ship, 2014) 002“, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/legalcode kees torn (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MSC_Oscar_(ship,_2014)_002.jpg ), „MSC Oscar (ship, 2014) 002“, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/legalcode MSC OSCAR & SVITZER NARI https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/16706997911 by https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/ Maersk Line (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Emma_Maersk_(8782727907).jpg ), „Emma Maersk (8782727907)“, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/legalcode Shipping21 (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HMM_Dream.jpg ), „HMM Dream“, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode https://pixabay.com/en/plane-airline-airport-fly-352730/ https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FEMA_-_42208_-_Antonov_Cargo_Plane_Unloads_Federal_Emergency_Management_Agency_C.jpg User:Wmeinhart - Wolfgang Meinhart, Hamburg (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LNG-carrier.Galea.wmt.jpg ), „LNG-carrier.Galea.wmt“, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/legalcode LNGtanker.jpg: Original uploader was Welleman at nl.wikipedia derivative work: OSH FPaD (talk) (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Partes_de_un_buque_gasero.svg ), „Partes de un buque gasero“, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/legalcode Tosaka (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LNG_tanker_(side_view).PNG), „LNG tanker (side view)“, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/legalcode https://pixabay.com/en/tanker-ship-oil-tanker-1242111/ Music The Story Unfolds - Jingle Punks https://youtu.be/_8iypSHvdx0

Serbian tourists still flock to Egypt's Red Sea resort despite travel warning

02:25
Despite being advised by their foreign ministry not to travel to Egypt, many Serbians are continuing to take holidays in the country's Red Sea resorts. The foreign ministry said in a statement last week that about 700 Serbian tourists were in Egypt and that none had faced any danger or asked the embassy for help. Tourists have been advised to stay in hotels and not venture to Cairo or to the pyramids. One group of around 160 tourists returned to Belgrade on a chartered flight from Hurghada on Wednesday, and the prevailing view was that they had felt secure and only heard about the fighting elsewhere in Egypt from relatives back home in Serbia. "Frankly, we weren't worried at all, we spent time in our resort and we didn't have any trouble, nor did we feel endangered at any point," said Nemanja Bracko. Milos Jevremovic, who travelled on the same flight, said: "It was a proper vacation, with no problems whatsoever, with no tensions, a nice holiday." Another holidaymaker said she "would go there again, no problem". Despite such positive reports, and continued interest from clients, some Serbian tourist agencies have cancelled Egypt packages altogether. Others, like the Big Blue tourist agency in Belgrade, say that sales have slightly dropped because of the latest crisis, despite very low prices of about 500 euros (670 US dollars) for an all-inclusive package in a five-star resort, but that the number of tourists interested in travelling to the Red Sea resorts still remains significant. Iva Djuric, a tourist agent at Big Blue, explained the trend on Tuesday, describing the crisis in Egypt as being "associated only with Cairo and other major cities". "The sea resorts are safe and our clients feel safe there, and, apart from that, Serbs often claim to be the bravest people in Europe," she added. Japanese Street Food - LIVE FUGU PUFFERFISH Puffer Fish Japan

15:03
Fugu (河豚 or 鰒; フグ) is the Japanese word for pufferfish and the dish prepared from it, normally species of genus Takifugu, Lagocephalus, or Sphoeroides, or porcupinefish of the genus Diodon. Fugu can be lethally poisonous due to its tetrodotoxin; therefore, it must be carefully prepared to remove toxic parts and to avoid contaminating the meat. The restaurant preparation of fugu is strictly controlled by law in Japan and several other countries, and only chefs who have qualified after three or more years of rigorous training are allowed to prepare the fish. Domestic preparation occasionally leads to accidental death. Fugu is served as sashimi and chirinabe. Some consider the liver to be the tastiest part, but it is also the most poisonous, and serving this organ in restaurants was banned in Japan in 1984. Fugu has become one of the most celebrated and notorious dishes in Japanese cuisine.

On the Isles of Scilly, people take their time. Since the 1920s, Scillonian has been the Islands’ faithful servant, taking folk to the mainland and bringing new friends. To an islander, it’s not important if the crossing takes a while. They relax in a café, perhaps watch for dolphins and basking sharks – and of course take in Cornwall’s iconic coastline from a perspective few others ever get to see. Visit Scilly, and you’ll find the way of life’s contagious; you can’t help but relax. And here’s the secret: it all begins when we welcome you on-board. Prehistoric Creatures That Still Exist Today

Remove the weak and flawed and move forward with the best and fittest among existing species. For a species to have lasted through not only generations but across eras and time periods, those inside of that species have to have adapted within their present environment and preserved their existence amidst predatory threats. Humans may be intellectually advanced beings, but we never had to find a means of survival while dinosaurs roamed the earth. Other creatures, however, did. And, believe it or not, some of them have stuck around to this very day. While we humans view ourselves as the predominant species on the planet, we weren’t the first one’s here, nor are we currently the longest-reigning residents of the planet. When you think about it, this list of prehistoric creatures that continue to exist into the present day features species that have lived alongside – and survived and outlived – some of the biggest, nastiest and most vicious carnivores to ever walk the earth. It helps that so many of the species dwell under water, leaving them safe from some threats while prone to others and also making them rarely seen and almost mythical in nature. Indeed, little seems to have changed for these species as they’ve forged through so much of the universe’s existence. Most have maintained a remarkable level of similarity in their appearance and behavior from their prehistoric selves. Incredibly, these creatures may not represent a complete collection of what still exists among us. Despite modern advances in scientific technology, we are still learning of existing species both new and old, including ones thought long since extinct. The ancient coelacanth fish, for instance, was thought to have died out 65 million years ago, with researchers unaware that lucky fishermen off the coast of Africa had been occasionally catching them for years. Ultimately, one species came to be officially rediscovered in 1938 and another more recently in 1998. What we do know, however, is that we share the planet with living things that go back hundreds of millions of years. From ferocious sharks and alligators to living organisms as inert as a sea sponge, species both aggressive and tacit have stuck around long-term. All they share is an ancestry that goes back longer than we could possibly fathom. To put the life span of some of these species into perspective, the modern form of humans has a lineage that only traces back 200,000 years, with our earliest ancestors dating back to about six million years ago. In all of these estimated timelines, you can probably quibble on a million years here and there, but they still paint a picture of some pretty old species. Suffice to say, the ancestors of these creatures would probably have some stories to tell, provided that they were intelligent beings, could speak and didn’t die millions of years ago. Still, the survival skills of their species clearly can’t be questioned. Here are 10 prehistoric creatures that continue to live among us. So with the family out of the way Woody was able to work his way through the jobs list (we had a massive list to get through before we continued on from Aegina!) Before we left the UK he bought a load of cordless tools from Powertoolworld - a grinder, jigsaw, and drill so he's able to save so much money making and repairing things on the boat. We got the generator sorted out when we arrived but there was still the engine to paint, bilge pipes and strum boxes to sort out and the pre-filter of the water maker to rebuild. The grey water tank in the Amel is quite unique in that it's housed in the keel and all waste water drains into this bilge 'tank' so it's an important part of the boat to keep clean and maintain properly, so both automatic and manual bilge pipes were replaced. The pre filter for the watermaker was quite corroded and although we'd ordered most parts from the UK we still had to source bits locally on Aegina (which was easier said than done with strikes and strange opening hours!). Woody used to make industrial style furniture in the UK: https://www.ratandpallet.com/ so luckily he was used to working with pipes and fittings. We still haven't got around to fully servicing in the watermaker yet but that'll be on the next job list. We'd noticed that the kids really enjoy watching the dolphins and other wildlife from the bow of the boat and occasionally enjoy the personal space there. But at the moment we've just got a pulpit framework to sit on, so Woody set too and designed and made a cool bow seat for the front of the boat too. Mooring in the Mediterranean - particularly Greece - is mainly stern to parking, which means dropping an anchor three to five boat lengths out, reversing into the quayside and attaching stern lines to the dock. It sounds easy enough but crosswinds, prop walk and crossed anchors (and lack of experience) can turn it into an entertaining spectacle. When Woody and I were flotilla skippers in Greece we used to raft up all the time, which is fine as long as you've got everybody's consent and someone to coordinate it. But when boats just turn up and decide they're going to raft up without anybody's consent and no coordination, then it leads to a whole new level of chaos, as Woody experienced when Ukrainian business flotilla turned up and literally gave him sleepless nights! Two weeks went by quickly and Woody headed to Athens to meet us off the plane. Fortunately we have friends in Athens - Aurie and Mariela - who let us crash in their Athens apartment which meant we had time to visit the Parthenon! The Acropolis Museum is build on top the ruins of ancient Athens and is a great place to visit. However, the Acropolis and especially the Parthenon was very busy, like a lot of honey pot tourist attractions in Greece. We took pictures of #legoericka - a lego toy we were given by our author friend Ericka Waller to take around the world and visit all the places she can't because of her auto-immune disorder. Our daughter gave us a Greek mythology lesson about the foundation of Athens and Athena while our youngest regretted it wasn't named after his favourite Greek god - Poseidon. After visiting the Parthenon we headed back to Aegina but there's always drama in our life and on this occasion a woman was rescued by our ferry in the middle of the sea! You can see the full footage from this incident on the link: https://youtu.be/PTOZrIogdhs Back in Aegina the kids earned money for their ice-cream budget by busking which was a win-win, as it meant they put in lots of music practice too! After reinstalling our VHF and AIS transceiver following an MMSI update we paid our fees and did a final shop. Our youngest was particularly keen to stock up on strawberries and cherries so we bought some from a local fruit and veg boat, cleaned the bugs off them and raised our new British ensign. Finally it was ready to throw off the lines and leave the dock once again - heading for Poros and the Cyclades Islands. My name is Lisa. In Oct. 2014, I made the decision to quit my job and started downsizing my life by selling and rehoming all my belongings. Even though I've moved around all my life, I officially left the States in Dec. 2015 and have been travelling abroad as a minimalist nomad ever since, with everything I own fitting into a bag or two. My first destination after leaving the States was Scotland. Fortunately, I met my husband Kuba there. We dated (mostly long-distance as I was travelling through Europe alone) and when I returned to Scotland, we got married! We've been travelling together full-time since May 2017! In April 2018, we bought a Volkswagen T4 Transporter van and converted it into our first home. Now we live in our van full-time! :) #vanlife #Budapest #Hungary

Algarve Angling Experience on Still Water

01:14:41
In 1992, a company with whom I was associated with at the time, produced a couple of professionally made promotional video films to help promote angling holidays in the wonderful Algarve region of southern Portugal. I have decided to make these available for public viewing because the films, narrated by the charismatic Keith Arthur in his very own inimitable style, not only feature some really great anglers but also some great guys that are, sadly, no longer with us. This video includes actual footage from a specially arranged friendly match between an England team, assembled by and including Dick Clegg who’s Team had won the World Championships, in Hungary, just six months and Bob Nudd who was the current Individual World Champion. The films are completely unscripted and bring out the real character of all the guys involved. I could add a lot more but would rather let Keith do it for me. It should be remembered that these were made long before the huge growth of commercial, often unfairly referred to as ‘hole in the ground’, fisheries in the UK, which are artificially stocked with huge numbers of carp. Since these films were made the angling opportunities in the Algarve have dramatically improved with the construction of several new huge dams, known as ‘Barragems’. The only issue, albeit a big one, that still remains and that is actually getting your fishing tackle to Portugal as most airlines have strict luggage restrictions and, whilst they are quite prepared to give a special allowance for you to take golf clubs; skiing equipment and even guns, they do not regard fishing gear as ‘sports equipment’. This being the case, it would seem that the only way of overcoming this would be to travel by sea/land, perhaps undertaking the 2500 km drive yourself. However, the good news is that there is a great ex-pat, John Bate, who will organise everything for you, including licenses, tackle, bait and, most importantly, provide you with up to date local knowledge as to the best spots to fish. He can also take you deep sea fishing where you can have the chance to do battle with some truly amazing fish. In John’s own words, taken from the profile on his website:- Angling has been my passion since childhood. My early years were spent fishing the small ponds in Lancashire. Then from 16 – 37 years old I organised annual summer fishing expeditions to Ireland, finding many places which are now famous. I took my mates sea fishing in my 24 ft boat from Fleetwood, catching tope, cod etc. I lost interest in fishing in Ireland and England – too predictable for me and started fishing in Spain and Portugal. Fell in love with Portugal and moved out over 20 years ago. More details can be found on John’s website - http://www.tightlines-portugal.com Although this film was made over twenty five years ago, I have used the original master tape and had it professionally converted to give the best possible quality. I really hope you enjoy the film and, if you do, please let others know so that they can as well. Eddie Mears

Clashing with customs – We’re stunned & still in shock! S03E06

After we leave Symi we head SE to Rhodes the largest of the Dodecanese islands. Rhodes old town sits behind a solid stone wall with the castle as its main feature. We choose to anchor off the harbour with great friends Carl & Jenny on S/Y Dream who have been great boating buddies over the past few days. One of the Seven Wonders of the World ‘Colossus of Rhodes’ is said to have stood over the harbour entrance here, not sure about that but who cares, it’s great history and brings thousands of tourists onto this beautiful Island. Hiring a car we head to the pretty town of Lindos before once again setting sail, this time back to our adopted country of Turkey. Is Flint Still Without CLEAN WATER?! TRAVEL VLOG #4

21:05
My thoughts on the Flint water crisis... I do want to add that testing in 2017 showed that lead levels were lower than what they started out to be but they still direct Flint residents to use bottled water... They have permanently closed the free water distribution centers. Many of the residents of Flint don't even trust these readings and have lost trust in the entire Michigan government seeing how they were neglectful to human rights to begin with by allowing this to happen. Like I said, I'm not too informed on what's going on. This is what I know from family and a few articles online I have read. I have also read that they expect all of the old pipes to start being replaced in 2020. Hopefully that is true! Keep holding on my Flint fam!! #Flintstrong LEXI'S CHANNEL: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSsjHLe0h1vY3vhleTIhwlQ ***MY BEAUTY CHANNEL: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKfuAADz9rh4Y6CHZmRoefw 📲 Find me on Social Media! SOUNDBITE (Malayalam) Gokuldas, main carpenter known as ' Mestri ': "We belong to the ancient ' Edathampadi ' family - it was our family which built ships for King Cheraman Perumal. From that time, all of us have been doing this work. I worked with my father for a long time and since his demise, I have built about 15 Urus ( traditional vessels ) on my own. My father built more than 50 such vessels." 12. Tracking of plank made of special wood used for building Uru 13. Wide of men working in hold of vessel 14. Various of inside of vessel made with wooden planks 15. Top angle of man hammering 16. Close of wood being sliced 17. SOUNDBITE (Malayalam) K.M. Mammad Koya Mooppan, Uru builder: "The specialty of Beypore Uru is that it is very strong. Our 'Nilamboor Teak ' (wood) is famous for being used in the construction of Uru....but it is now expensive and hard to find. We have been using imported wood, but it is not the same (quality) as the special Beypore teak wood. As for the shape of the vessel, it was designed by expert carpenters... but they are no longer with us." 18. Wide of men building vessel 19. Close of hands drawing line on wood to take measurements 20. Top angle of man fitting in plank of wood 21. Low angle of man working 22. SOUNDBITE (Malayalam) Gokuldas, main carpenter known as ' Mestri ': "The thing to note is that before taking it (the vessel) into water, you have to do all the calculations in your mind. It is only after taking it into water you can understand whether you have made any mistakes ....but nothing has gone wrong to date. You have to be careful during construction - and pay attention to balancing, as well as the shapes and measurements of the wooden planks." 23. Wide of Beypore market place 24. Close of an old woman carrying umbrella 25. Wide of shop selling miniature Urus 26. Close of miniature Uru inside a glass bottle 27. Various of miniature boats 28. Various of man painting miniature boat 29. SOUNDBITE (Malayalam) Sanal Kumar, miniature boat maker: "The main market for these boats is in the Gulf countries like Kuwait , Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Many people going to the Gulf from here take 5 to 10 pieces with them. Many Arab visitors also buy them for trading in their countries." 30. Various of interiors of an Uru 31. SOUNDBITE (Malayalam) Yahya Sore Manzil, owner of Uru-building company: "We need about eight months to build a vessel. But these days we do not have enough labour available, so it has taken more than a year to finish making just the basic structure. After a few months, a ship will come from Dubai to take it away. Fitting of the engine and other things will be done in Dubai itself." 32. Wide of river as seen from inside the vessel LEAD-IN : Automation may be the order of the day for most manufacturing these days, but craftsmen at an ancient ship building centre in South India still use their bare hands to make huge vessels. Using traditional carpentry techniques and mental calculations, the expert ship builders manage to construct a perfectly aligned luxury ship used for travel and trade. STORYLINE: Beypore in North Kerala used to be one of the busiest trading ports and fishing harbours, located 10km south of Kozhikode town, at the mouth of the Chaliyar River. The dimensions vary according to the size of the vessel. Here are all my Namibia travel vlogs: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwAg4W73zUvL65I9TUD2bbHliJmcFp02g Namibia is one of the fastest growing tourism destinations in Africa. But there is still so much misinformation about travel in Namibia. So, I wanted to put together a travel guide to Namibia that is inn depth and covers every aspect of travel and photography in the country. Of course, with my photography background, this guide focuses on photography. But, I think it basically covers all the travel guide stuff as well. I believe that with this video it should cover every question you have about Namibia as a travel destination. If you have more questions about Namibia, be sure to drop a comment and I'll get back at you with the answers. As for life, we're now out of Namibia and back in South Africa. I've got a bunch of travel vlogs and some photography bits here and there coming up as well. #Namibia

The deep ocean is the final frontier on planet Earth

14:49
The ocean covers 70% of our planet. The deep-sea floor is a realm that is largely unexplored, but cutting-edge technology is enabling a new generation of aquanauts to go deeper than ever before. Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: http://econ.trib.al/rWl91R7 Beneath the waves is a mysterious world that takes up to 95% of Earth's living space. Only three people have ever reached the bottom of the deepest part of the ocean. The deep is a world without sunlight, of freezing temperatures, and immense pressure. It's remained largely unexplored until now. Cutting-edge technology is enabling a new generation of aquanauts to explore deeper than ever before. They are opening up a whole new world of potential benefits to humanity. The risks are great, but the rewards could be greater. From a vast wealth of resources to clues about the origins of life, the race is on to the final frontier The Okeanos Explorer, the American government state-of-the-art vessel, designed for every type of deep ocean exploration from discovering new species to investigating shipwrecks. On board, engineers and scientists come together to answer questions about the origins of life and human history. Today the Okeanos is on a mission to investigate the wreck of a World War one submarine. Engineer Bobby Moore is part of a team who has developed the technology for this type of mission. The “deep discover”, a remote operating vehicle is equipped with 20 powerful LED lights and designed to withstand the huge pressure four miles down. Equivalent to 50 jumbo jets stacked on top of a person While the crew of the Okeanos send robots to investigate the deep, some of their fellow scientists prefer a more hands-on approach. Doctor Greg stone is a world leading marine biologist with over 8,000 hours under the sea. He has been exploring the abyss in person for 30 years. The technology opening up the deep is also opening up opportunity. Not just to witness the diversity of life but to glimpse vast amounts of rare mineral resources. Some of the world's most valuable metals can be found deep under the waves. A discovery that has begun to pique the interest of the global mining industry. The boldest of mining companies are heading to the deep drawn by the allure of a new Gold Rush. But to exploit it they're also beating a path to another strange new world. In an industrial estate in the north of England, SMD is one of the world's leading manufacturers of remote underwater equipment. The industrial technology the company has developed has made mining possible several kilometers beneath the ocean surface. With an estimated 150 trillion dollars’ worth of gold alone, deep-sea mining has the potential to transform the global economy. With so much still to discover, mining in the deep ocean could have unknowable impact. It's not just life today that may need protecting; reaching the deep ocean might just allow researchers to answer some truly fundamental questions. Hydrothermal vents, hot springs on the ocean floor, are cracks in the Earth's crust. Some claim they could help scientists glimpse the origins of life itself. We might still be years away from unlocking the mysteries of the deep. Even with the latest technology, this kind of exploration is always challenging. As the crew of the Okeanos comes to terms with a scale of the challenge and the opportunity that lies beneath, what they and others discover could transform humanity's understanding of how to protect the ocean. It's the most hostile environment on earth, but the keys to our future may lie in the deep.
