More than half of the world's population already lives in cities, and another 2.5 billion people are projected to move to urban areas by 2050. The way we build new cities will be at the heart of so much that matters, from climate change to economic vitality to our very well-being and sense of connectedness. Peter Calthorpe is already at work planning the cities of the future and advocating for community design that's focused on human interaction. He shares seven universal principles for solving sprawl and building smarter, more sustainable cities. A small kitchen in a Toronto semi gets a major upgrade by designer Olivia Botrie of Dart Studio. Discover how she expanded the space and created a clean country look that speaks to both contemporary and traditional sensibilities. Olivia added 65 square feet to the narrow room, creating a 250-square-foot kitchen. Custom slab cabinets in a quiet sage color offer smart storage while keeping budget in mind. A rustic wood table brings warmth to the clean, open space, and a banquette provides comfortable seating. One of the homeowners’ asks was to add enough natural light to grow plants, so Olivia chose high transom windows, which work with the modern aesthetic and still allow for privacy. This Urban Design plan and section study highlights a critical part of my design process. After the project initiation and research, I begin to define the framework for a site (circulation, building footprints and open spaces etc..). While sketching in plan, my focus is on the experience of the person. How are the buildings touching the ground? What should the massings of the building be? It is critical to understand the implications of moves made in these initial phases as they set the framework of scale, space and experience moving forward. In addition to figuring out the big moves, I am constantly testing them with little vignettes similar to this, in plan, section and perspective. MATERIALS: - Sketchbook - Medium pen - Thick Pen - Papermate Gray pen - White Gel Pen GRAPHIC PROCESS (Step by Step) Remember to stay loose, these sketches RARELY end up in any deliverable to clients. They are used to verify design decisions. 1. (0:07) I start by loosely sketching in the edge of sidewalk and building facade with the medium thickness pen. I add a little detail to the floor plate of the building just for scale reference. For these sketches I don't get too fussy with lineweights etc. 2. (0:20) I start to add some detail to the streetscape - this just consists of some random score lines, sloppy trees, and some cars for scale. 3. (0:30) I come back through with the thick pen (Pentel Sign Pen in this case) and add some profiles to the critical vertical elements. 4. (0:35) I tend to rely on shadow to bring my sketches to life. Here I'm using a thin lineweight gray pen to add shadows and definition to the plan elements. 5. (0:44) After adding the shadow I come through with the gel pen (which didn't really work because I didn't let the ink dry first). I also add additional blackline detail where needed. 6. (0:53) Section time. Again, this is just a process sketch, but I try to relate to the plan as much as I can with the section scale. I begin by sketching in the critical elements: street, sidewalk, building facade. 7. (0:52) Now I'm adding in some additional detail elements, the trees, car, people and floors to help define scale. 8. (1:04) After the base is in I come through with the thick pen and add weight to the profile of key elements. I also add thickness to the shadow side of elements - with the typical assumption of sun in the top left of the paper. I follow up with the gray pen again. A little trick I have been trying recently with some success is to carry the shadow all the way to the ground. It seems to create a more dynamic image. 9. (1:10) Last I come through with text labels as well as any additional highlights or detail that is needed.

Learn what Scale, Proportion and Pattern mean and how to use this knowledge to identify home styles! VIEW our portfolio: https://goo.gl/WvA1WD LEARN more on our blog: https://goo.gl/wWTtfy Now offering energy-efficient plan sets: https://goo.gl/ZQsWk3 What style is my house? That’s a common question asked by homeowners wishing to better understand the style of the home they live in. It’s a simple enough question, but as with most simple things it becomes more complex the more you learn. This video introduces some key terms we use when discussing architectural design: Scale, proportion and pattern. Scale. How the size of a building or building elements relate to a person. This could also mean how the size of a building relates to a neighborhood or a surrounding area. Proportion. Proportion is used to describe how the size of the elements within a design relate to each other. Large objects may be out of scale when compared to a person, but still work within the context of a design because they’re in proportion to one another. Think about the columns at the parthenon. Pattern. Pattern describes the arrangement of the building’s features, as viewed from the street. How the rhythm of elements such as windows, columns, material changes and accent features such as brackets are used. People are pattern seekers and symmetry is a pleasing and easily distinguishable base to a pattern. Weiss, owner of Weisshouse, a Pittsburgh resource for high-end vintage home goods, and Carpenter, a general contractor and owner of Carpenter Construction, became their own clients when they finally found this space. “We originally lived in a three-story house, then sold it and rented a loft while looking for a building to repurpose. We knew we wanted an industrial feeling with one-floor living,” Weiss says. Now, what was once a commercial building is reincarnated as a loft-inspired home.

We've grown good at making many things in the modern world - but strangely the art of making attractive cities has been lost. Here are some key principles for how to make attractive cities once again. If you like our films, take a look at our shop (we ship worldwide): https://goo.gl/fwFNPV FURTHER READING “Cities are a big deal. We pretty much all have to live in them. We should try hard to get them right. So few cities are nice, very few out of many thousands are really beautiful; embarrassingly the more appealing ones tend to be old, which is weird because we’re mostly much better at making things now...” You can read more on this and other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org at this link: https://goo.gl/6wYBGc MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/RWcyzt Watch more films on CAPITALISM in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLcapitalism Do you speak a different language to English? A quick and fun, pen and wash demonstration of my Urbansketching style. Easy to follow and learn. The reference for this painting was a photo I took in Porto Portugal. I was fortunate enough to have sketched this same image on location. On Arches 140lb hot press, Natural white paper. Uni-ball Micro pen is a rollerball type and is almost indestructible. Both the pen and paper are Archival Quality Winsor Newton: Sap Green, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine, Sepia, Yellow Ochre da Vinci: Quinacridone Fuchsia and Phthalo Blue. To own a peaceful abode in a crowded city of Mumbai, is nothing less than a dream for an individual. Space constraint has become a prominent issue for builders, architects and individuals. This has left Mumbai with a sole option of rising vertically! Capitalising on this challenge, Architect Nitin Killawala’s residence in Mumbai’s Juhu Scheme, makes a bold statement. He narrates you the concept of this urban house, which at its first sight, looks like stacked drawers.

In her TEDxRiga talk, Evelīna Ozola speaks about the importance of the street as a public space and ways of reclaiming it. Evelīna comes up with an attractive and thought-provoking method of prototyping street space and involving the society in the designing process of it. Evelina Ozola is a practicing architect who likes to get her hands dirty by trying out her in crowded streets of Riga. She has worked as an architect and urban designer at “SVESMI” in Rotterdam and “MADE arhitekti” in Riga. Next to design work, for the last 7 years Evelina has been writing for online and printed press, and is currently responsible for the Latvian creative industries website FOLD. Together with Toms Kokins, she runs design studio Fine Young Urbanists, a practice that mainly operates in the field of tactical urbanism. Its rich soil was ideal for growing rice and attracted farmers from far and wide. In 1600, the great commander Tokugawa Ieyasu won the Battle of Sekigahara, a pivotal moment in history that secured Edo’s status as the most important place in Japan. Unfortunately, the buildings of the expanding city were made of wood and paper, a dangerous combination to confront the warm winds of summer. Legend has it that on one particularly dry afternoon in 1657, a priest made the deadly mistake of burning an unlucky kimono. The fire flared up, ignited his temple, and engulfed 70% of the city. 100,000 people lost their lives. Despite the disaster, by the middle of the 19th century Edo’s population was in the millions. That’s when the military shogunate system that had ruled for almost 700 years ended. A new government led by a young emperor finally made Edo the official capital of Japan, renamed it Tokyo, and made the castle his imperial palace. To celebrate his arrival, everyone toasted with rounds of sake on the house. Around this time Japan opened up to foreign trade and influence, with Tokyo driving the industrial revolution that was modernizing the country. But rapid development had a cost: a strained natural environment. Forests were razed, pollutants choked the air, and Tokyo’s once pristine waterways grew increasingly toxic. It was time for a more conscientious approach. The principle of Satoyama was born, promoting sustainable coexistence with nature, especially in the rice fields covering Japan’s sprawling foothills. Today, a century of conservation has resulted in parks covering 20% of the land in the Tokyo metropolitan area. But while the danger from pollution has been largely overcome, one natural phenomenon poses an unavoidable threat: earthquakes. In 1923, an 8.0 magnitude quake rocked Tokyo, devastating the geologically unstable eastern wards of the city. As firestorms engulfed whole neighborhoods, some took advantage of the chaos to target political enemies and minority groups, like Koreans. When the smoke finally cleared, 140,000 people had perished. Just twenty-two years later, in 1944, Tokyo was hit again. This time from above by allied air forces who waged a relentless nine month campaign that lasted until Japan’s surrender to end WWII following America’s detonation of two atomic weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On the worst night of the onslaught, 279 Boeing B-29 Superfortress heavy bombers dropped more than 1,600 tons of explosives on Eastern Tokyo... It took generations for Tokyo to completely recover, but today - after more than seven decades at peace - Tokyo is thriving... Zee news says in the newspaper that congress should make hawaii renewable like Japan.

From Gothic Lolitas to Yoyogi Rockabillies, the Tokyo neighborhood of Harajuku is a wellspring of some of the world's most unique and extreme fashion trends. Rife with restaurants, shops, and cafes, it's a hangout 'hood for the city's youth, whose style is confined to uniforms from elementary school through to high school graduation. And, perhaps to rebel from such strict sameness, they spend their weekends seeing how far they can push the limits. One of the oldest and most pervasive Harajuku style groups is Decora, characterized by a pursuit of kawaii, or "cuteness," which is expressed in massive piles of hair clips, face bandaids, creative layering, and a mishmash of colors and textures. Don't let "cute" confuse you: There's nothing delicate or elegant about Decora. It's bright, it's loud, and it's in your face (or rather, on your face, via a Hello Kitty bandaid). Though the style can appear as frivolous as a Halloween costume, there's a real statement behind the bevy of barrettes. In the face of pervasive group-mindedness, a rigid social order, and cultural reticence, the Decora have figured out a way to break free. In the first episode of our new documentary series, Style Out There, our host Asha Leo travels to Harajuku to meet with street fashion superstars, like 90884 designer Kurebayashi, Junnyan, and Shoichi Aoki, the founder of FRUiTS magazine, to peel back the rainbow-colored stickers and uncover the depth behind Decora. More than 8 million people are crowded together to live in New York City. What makes it possible? In part, it's the city's great public spaces -- from tiny pocket parks to long waterfront promenades -- where people can stroll and play. Amanda Burden helped plan some of the city's newest public spaces, drawing on her experience as, surprisingly, an animal behaviorist. She shares the unexpected challenges of planning parks people love -- and why it's important. http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/62333729/video/houzz-tv-you-wont-believe-everything-this-tiny-loft-can-do Donnie and Nicole Chiu-Wang loved the location of their San Francisco studio, but they desperately needed to make its 537 square feet feel more spacious. To do that, they turned their attention to the 13-foot ceiling. Having watched online videos of cleverly designed moving walls in small New York City apartments, they thought that there must be a way to use their space more efficiently too. Donnie reached out to an architect friend, who offered to take on the dilemma with another friend. The pair came up with a prefabricated multipurpose loft that freed up square footage, and includes two beds, a stand-up desk, a dining table and plenty of storage.

"If you really believe that suburbs are going to die, then let them die, and let the market address the situation" says Joel Kotkin, Chapman University professor and urban planning specialist. But letting the market work is far from ideal for California's regional planners and local politicians, who want almost 70 percent of new housing over the next 25 years to be multi-unit apartment-style dwelliings, despite the facts that more than half of Southern California households reside in a single-family home and that more people are leaving California than are coming in. "In a great nation like ours, you can't let people do what they want. It has to be coordinated," says Hasan Ikhrata, the executive director of the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG). Ikhrata's group, which directs planning for the Southern California region via subsidies and contracting with big developers, foresees a future in which Southern California is dense, full of high-rise buildings, and connected by rail, much like New York City. The problem is, LA isn't New York. No city but New York is New York, and attempts to force high-density, New York-style development onto areas that don't need it can result in terrible unintended consequences. "Many people see a light rail and think the San Francisco trolley line," says Damien Goodmon, spokesman for the Crenshaw Subway Coalition. He lives in LA's historical black neighborhood Leimert Park and has seen the effects bad planning can have on established communities. "You can have transit riders and still destroy a community," says Goodmon. And the ultimate irony of the unending push for high-density planning in sprawling Southern California is that while, yes, Manhattan is denser than LA, if you zoom out a bit, LA-Long Beach-Anaheim is already the densest urban region in the United States. That happened without any sustained, conscious high-density housing development or state-of-the-art rail transit. "One of the things that happens when you force this kind of high-density development is you destroy the very urban neighborhoods that retain the middle class," says Kotkin. "The neighborhoods have to fight this kind of guerilla-style." Watch the Reason TV video above to learn more about the ideology, politics, and outcomes of modern urban planning. About 6:30 minutes.
