That was clear as mud (to me). While I'm learning, can I treat sharpness like the old single component setting - for example - a sharpness of three (old setting), just put 3,3,3 in all the parameters? Really appreciate people like yourself sharing these things.

hi, thx 4 all my canon 5d m4 is losing Focus sometimes... Why ?
Avy Perez (6 months ago)
Hi Joe, So to sum up, what's the setting that you recommend for general photogrophy and portraits to optimize the image quality ? 6.2.3 ?
Joe Jackson (6 months ago)
Hello Avy, if you shoot in RAW these settings are not applied to the raw file. The settings are only used for the preview on the back of the camera.
Ratty Kulture (6 months ago)
how do you access them? i cant see fineness and threshol in mine
Darren Chan (4 months ago)
I've got 2 5D IVs. One is an older piece and does not have the fine detail settings for sharpness, despite having updated the firmware. And I can't seem to find any information about it anywhere online. Do you know if there is something else I have to do to enable it?
Joe Jackson (6 months ago)
What camera are you using?

Hey Joe, I used your settings for sharpness/video on my Canon 5DSR and Tamron 24-70mm G2, Nailed it, THANK YOU
Leroy Skalstad (10 months ago)
This is perfect for my pro-bono work at graduations at Marquette University where I shoot Jpeg and simply give the memory card to my impromptu clients, Thanks to Amazon for finding memory cards 'That Work' on the cheap, I use an Expodisc for custom WB and for incident light readings, These sharpness settings were just what I needed to bring everything together, The link is to an image of the Joan of Arc Chapel, My favorite location shooting spot at the university. https://pixabay.com/en/architectural-marquette-university-2290483/

Great video! Do you think the picture profile you recommended for vlogging would work with the Canon 10-18 and the 50mm f1.8?
Joe Jackson (1 year ago)
Its not dependent on the lens. :-)
Smaakjeks K (1 year ago)
This was so helpful! I loved the quality of the 5D3, because of that AA-filter which made the video look smooth and flat, with no busy aliasing in grass or other sharp lines. Using Premiere Pro I could safely increase sharpness in post and end up with very decent looking HD video. I recently got the 5D-sr, and found it to have a LOT of aliasing in the video. It made me worried. But, you helped me discover that it was merely the video settings that were set to high sharpness and fineness. Not necessary with the sharp lenses I have. I'd rather have smooth and soft video which then can be beautifully sharpened in post. Thanks!

Glad to help :-)
Very very nice tutorials This tutorial solve my 4 month before dawts Thanks so much
Joe Jackson (1 year ago)

Please forgive me when I say this but it's (Fa-ness), not fine-ness
marbleman52 (11 months ago)
Are you talking about the word 'finesse'? It's pronounced... fi-ness... ( short 'i' , not short 'a' )

Hey Joe, Thanks for the tutorial. Great job.
WojtriX (1 year ago)
Is it a firmware for all Canons or just in the newest model?
Joe Jackson (1 year ago)
Just newer models. I think the 5DSR has it, the 5D4 does and also the 80D.

Thank you for the information, unfortunately I only have 70D and the lenses are Canon 50mm F1.8, Tokina 11-16 F2.8 and Tamron 70-300mm variable apeture with VC, any way it still work, I like the neutral settings. Two Thumbs Up.
Joe Jackson (2 years ago)
Thanks Abel.

Excellent work Joe. My t6i doesn't have such detailed settings, but this is an excellent reference.
Joe Jackson (2 years ago)
Thanks Bruce, my T3i and 70D also do not have the fine detail settings for sharpness. For those I just use a sharpness of 5. But all the other settings are the same. Cheers..

Im sorry but this video wasn't that much help, I expected for you to give a guide on how to set your camera to take sharp photos but that wasn't the case. As nice as the video is as a novice photographer I was looking for certain answers that weren't answered. This Video maybe should have "Understanding Canon Picture Styles In Editing" because you were editing pictures not showing htricks how how to set your camera to take a great picture. No disrespect just criticism but the video was still helpful to a degree just not what I needed.
