The Best Movies Ever Made (Top 40) (Greatest Films Of All Time)

8884 ratings | 2932963 views
In my opinion: these are really the best 40 movies ever made!!! Unfortunately I forgot to mention some movies like INTO THE WILD, LIFE OF PI or SHUTTER ISLAND (or INTERSTELLAR cause it came out after I've created this video)... BUT: Movies like LORD OF THE RINGS, STAR WARS, FIGHT CLUB, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, 300, MAGNOLIA etc. or the whole old stuff like PSYCHO, CASABLANCA, CITIZEN KANE, 12 ANGRY MEN, THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY (entire Dollar-Trilogy),VERTIGO, CLOCKWORK ORANGE, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, THE KID, MODERN TIMES, THE GREAT DICTATOR, SEVEN SAMURAI, RAGING BULL, SHINING, JAWS, 2001 etc. etc. etc. most of them are great, even very great, of course!!! AND YES I've seen them all!!! But in my opinion, they can not be counted among the 40 best movies of all time only cause they are old, classic and have good ratings TODAY, most of them from people older than 60!!! Why am I emphasizing TODAY? Cause many of these todays "Big Classics" were nothing special at their time, some even have been hated and only many many years later and mostly after the death of the director they become classics!!! So what is the fault of the todays directors whose masterpieces came after the Hitchcocks, Kubricks & Co.?! Who can say what people gonna think about Nolan, Spielberg, Fincher, Cameron & Co. in 20, 30, 40 years (if they are even today legends)? Then their movies of the last years become classics! So what? In contrast to many of you, I have my own opinion and I'm not being influenced and impressed by the years and the todays status of a movie, what only additionally do manipulate and raise up the value and impression of it! And by the way... all the movies of my list have everywhere !!!extreme high!!! ratings too... you can check it yourself (for example at IMDb)!!! PS I'm not really a Kubrick, Lynch or Hitchcock fan! (AND YES I've watched many of their movies!) AND OFFENSIVE OR CRUDE COMMENTS WILL BE DELETED IMMEDIATELY!!! YOU CAN ALSO ARGUE AND CRITICIZE IN A DECENT WAY!!! And for the critics here are the IMDb (by far the most credible rating stage) ratings of my movies: Memento: 8,5 The Lion King: 8,5 Jurassic Park 8,1 The Exorcist: 8,0 The Last Samurai: 7,7 (lil bit underrated, could be an 8,0 as well!) The Elephant Man: 8,2 Cast Away: 7,7 (underrated, deserves minimum 8,2) Pulp Fiction: 9,0 Rain Man: 8,0 Inception 8,8 Se7en: 8,7 Good Will Hunting: 8,2 Million Dollar Baby: 8,1 Hachi: 8,2 Munich: 7,6 (extremely underrated - deserved minimum 8,4) One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: 8,8 The Game: 7,8 (underrated - deserved minimum 8.4) Gran Torino: 8,2 American Beauty: 8,5 Avatar: 7,9 Léon: 8,6 Blood Diamond: 8,0 Terminator: 8,1 Terminator 2: 8,5 Indiana Jones: - Raiders Of The Lost Ark: 8,6 - Temple Of Doom: 7,6 (underrated - deserved minimum 8,0) - Last Crusade: 8,3 American History X: 8,6 The Pianist: 8,5 The Sixth Sense: 8,2 Life Is Beautiful: 8,6 Pan's Labyrinth: 8,3 (Lil' underrated - deserved minimum 8,6) Titanic: 7,7 (underrated - deserved minimum 8,4) The Shawshank Redemption: 9,3 The Godfather: 9,2 The Godfather Part II: 9,1 Alien: 8,5 Aliens: 8,4 Braveheart: 8,4 (underrated - deserved minimum 8,8) The Matrix: 8,7 Forrest Gump: 8,8 Batman Begins: 8,3 The Dark Knight: 9,0 The Dark Knight Rises: 8,6 Gladiator: 8,5 (deserved 8,8) The Green Mile: 8,5 (deserved minimum 8,9) Schindler's List: 8,9 (deserved minimum 9,3)

This list lacks true perspective. There's a few on this list that belong, but the rest, nowhere near it! Not one Western, which tells me the author of this list is too young to remember some TRULY great films.

If you add the words "in no particular order" I would agree with half your list. Apparently, you believe movies produced before 1970 cannot be considered a top 40. You must be a millennial.

Almost only English spoken movies! Do you know French, Italian or Russian movies?

Aside from a couple movies that I have not seen, your choices for top 40 are all great movies. While others may claim they are not the top 40 I understand that these are YOUR pics for top 40. Sure my list may be different than yours but that's because it would be MY list. Each of us are different in what we like and that does not mean anybody's list is wrong, certainly not yours. Especially when your list contains such great titles. "Great List" FYI - Million Dollar Baby may be my #1 pic if I had to choose because of the story line, the awesome character development, the directing/editing, Morgan Freeman's narrative during the movie and of course....... Sorry, can't type that. That would be a spoiler to a great move. *When trying to tell someone who hasn't seen it to watch Million Dollar Baby somewhere in that short conversation you have to say, just watch it, if I say anything more, I will ruin it for you. "Inkheart" & "Stranger than Fiction" are on my great movie list because of the "unique" story line and for their entailment value. You may want to give them a watch.

Sheila Kaur (10 days ago)
none of the Bond movies made this list. I guess it's all subjective. We need to start adding 'In my opinion' in the titles for such lists.

Nothing before 1970 Right here is a watch list. Some of these will blow your mind A Matter of Life and Death 1946 Oliver Twist 1948 My Fair Lady 1964 The Million Pound Note 1950 Bridge On The River Kwai 1956 Lawrence Of Arabia 1962 The Ladykillers 1954 Ryan's Daughter 1970 A Clockwork Orange 1971 Mississipi Burning 1995 Dead of Night 1948 The Producers 1968 North By Northwest 1959 That's enough for now

I tried to revisit your list. I believe in giving people a second chance. Well... bottom line... obviously you are a child, or a young adult with absolutely no film or film history knowledge. That's all well and good. Just be careful, then, when you say 'greatest' films. They might be your 'greatest films', or 'favorite films', but, by no means, is this list of your 'greatest films ever made' anywhere near reality. It just shows your lack of knowledge. Sorry.
Robert M (10 days ago)
Sorry but not even close to any true film buff's list some choices maybe 8 or 9 would make the list: Godfather, Braveheart, Schindler's List, Pulp Fiction to name some but for Goodness sake ...Jurassic Park, the titanic, Avatar, Alien, the Green Mile etc. are good movies but they simply are not in the same league as: Ragging Bull, Goodfellas, the Hustler, Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Bridge Over the River Kwai, Godfather 2, Cool Hand Luke, Judgment at Nuremberg, or The Incredible Shrinking Man and I could easily list 25 others. Man you should watch more movies before posting such a bad list,

I'm 43 - not old. You fell flat on your face when you gave your reasons for not including classics. It's not worth it learning about diamonds from someone who won't even be able to recognize a diamond when they see one. You've not thought this through, haven't you? Using today's pop-logic and standards to judge older movies THAT SET THOSE STANDARDS IN THE FIRST PLACE(which you've become used to and thus- dismiss), betrays your lack of insight. Great movies aren't just entertaining, popular, made money or even "fresh" and unique- they have some of these characteristics, but they also influence culture, can be used as benchmarks and reference points as well as subjects of study in Cinematography and Acting- amongst other things. When i see stuff like 'Avatar' here, I'm thinking... "Wait.. What!?" Once Upon A Time In the West Seven Samurai The Silence of The Lambs 2001: A Space Odyssey Unforgiven .. are just some of the movies not on this list- and there are many, while there are many that don't belong on this list in the first place.

Interesting list. Some here might be on everyone's list, like "Titanic" "American History X," but, there are some pretty obvious omissions of films generally considered to be "Classics," such as "Gone With The Wind." As for Disney, well, "Beauty And The Beast" far outstrips "The Lion King" in my book! :O)

Very misleading title. My favourite top movies would be a better title. To say classic films only because classic after the death of a director is also way wrong. The fact is you seem to suggest that you have seen old movies but do not understand what makes a great movie. It's just an opion and doesn't take total earnings into consideration. I would suggest that you seem very young with a narrow view of the past.

I love your list. I love every list without the old shitty movies because it is honest. I really laugh when someone says ( psycho, Casablanca, citizen Kane, Dr.stranglove ... etc ) are better than ( Gladiator, LOTR, Dark Knight, Braveheart, Inception ... etc ) just and only just because they are classic movies and liked by expert people. They are watchable no doubt, but to be considered the greatest is gotta be a joke.
Terry Malloy (1 month ago)
go read an article on Pure Cinema and come back( a bit lazy to type)
theGoldenboy111111 (1 month ago)
Terry Malloy Pure!! What is pure in the killing scene when the lady was showering !! Disaster scene that's more accurate. How about when she suddenly heard his mom refusing her to come and not hear any other thing from the conversation !! Not going to talk about the acting performance or directing because it was really awful. I bet if ( Vacancy ) movie was made in 1960 it would have been the greatest movie of all time. But too bad for them it was made in 2007. Someone else steal that honor so it is now the greatest movie ever. Nobody can make better than that from now on.
Terry Malloy (1 month ago)
see, Psycho has exceptional narrative style with great Context's and Subtext's.....movies like psycho is one of the true examples of pure cinema...and films are meant to be pure
theGoldenboy111111 (1 month ago)
It's seems to me that you are considering them great because that what the experts and people said !! That actually prove my points A lot of people are doing the same exact thing, " The expert said it is one of the greatest movies so it has to be ", " It has very high rates on IMDb so it has to be great or i know nothing about movies " Stop that please, because in this case there is no point of making new movies because it always going to be worse than the old movies
Terry Malloy (1 month ago)
know about the sight and sound poll conducted every year?....you can find psycho, Casablanca, citizen Kane, Dr.stranglove in there but not LOTR, Dark Knight, Braveheart, Inception....dont say its a fake list because it has been voted by Film critics and Filmmakers
Ian Raper (1 month ago)
Actually, these are only what the author consider's to be the best movies ever made which is quite different from anyone else might consider to be the best movies ever made. The author seems to only consider movies made within the last 30-40 years which is disturbing because movies have been made for more than a century. Of the list made it is quite possible that only half a dozen of his selections (if that) would be included in anyone else's list. Whilst some selections are interesting and agreed with (Avatar, Aliens) the omission of many other, better qualified films or genres (eg: Westerns, Musicals?) is mystifying and a major drawback/oversight. Thumbs down.
