6 Years of Full Time Van Life for Travelling Digital Nomad Couple

2688 ratings | 144147 views
Armando and Mel have been living in a camper van, full-time for over 6 years now. To fund their travels, they work online as digital nomads doing freelance writing and videography. They also maintain a beautiful blog – Westfalia Digital Nomads, and have created a stunning documentary about van life. Westfalia Digital Nomads Blog: http://westfaliadigitalnomads.com/ VANLIFERS: Portrait of an Alternative Lifestyle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRQamLSFTy0 Mel and Armando fell into van life before it was trendy and they're proud of the fact that they don't take semi nude selfies of themselves to keep people interested in their alternative lifestyle (which has become the norm when searching #vanlife). They chose to live in a van because it was the perfect way to combine work, travel, and home. They have a portable WiFi device (they use a device from Huawei), and in each new country they buy a new SIM card with a data plan. This way they can do their work from almost anywhere in the world. They are not adrenaline junkies, rather, they prefer to travel slowly, spending a few months, or more, in each country. They also enjoy peaceful places and don't spend too much time in big cities. They've travelled most of Europe, Canada, and parts of Turkey and Morocco. It's interesting and inspiring for us to see a couple who've found a sustainable way to fun their travels, and who genuinely want to pursue a minimalist, alternative lifestyle over the long term. We hope you'll follow their adventures along with us! How do you get wifi on the go
Westfalia Digital Nomads (4 months ago)
we do have 2 option: 1) portable router for international wifi data card (we buy one each country we visit in EU, now for example all UK, 35 pounds for unlimited data) 2) we have another router with a contract: 12 euro a month for 30GB roaming free
Dr. Dance (5 months ago)
i should produce such video as well. I lived in a van for one year during study, no fake. VW Transporter with a flat roof is an absolutely unsuitable car for such a pupose. Good for 1-3 months holidays. So i dont believe it as i don´t many similar videos on youtube. A van from people they use it as permanent home looks completely different.
Westfalia Digital Nomads (4 months ago)
a van for permanent home is simply the one you find ok for you.
Westfalia Digital Nomads (4 months ago)
we do have a VW with the pop up roof (that we don't use that often btw) and it's been 6 year full time. It's a matter of adapting. It's still ok for us and we really enjoy traveling

i saw road signs from Latvia :D nice! i moved to usa and trying to do the same, but USA is different. the internet costs 70-100 a month and limited to 20GB a month and there is no unlimited plan, so its hard to work online :/
Westfalia Digital Nomads (6 months ago)
Eu probably is more easy for wifi. Our plan now is 12 Euros for 30 GB a month, plus lot's of cafes and bars with free wifi. In Portugal was 30 euros for unlimited wifi. We travel in Latvia for several months, and there the wifi is very fast!

Exploring Alternatives your videos are top of the line. What routes did they ship the van? What ports? Just curious. I would like to van tour Europe and Asia. THANKS
Westfalia Digital Nomads (6 months ago)
We ship our van from Emden (Germany) to Halifax (Canada). Also other ports as Antwerp or Rotterdam to CA or USA. We found a cheap option for the way back from Toronto to South Italy with VIAMAR SCILLA, was around 1.100 USD.

They are living my life right now , iv got 18 months left until it's my turn , I'm counting down the days , in my mind my life won't truly begin until I'm living free in the van .
Westfalia Digital Nomads yes I have that under control I own beardzbrothers leather goods and I make great products and it allows me to make money online and offline , thanks so much .
Westfalia Digital Nomads (8 months ago)
That's a good way of thinking, just be sure now that you still have time to prepare you future life. Check about work possibilities that you can do while traveling and get all you need in your van! And safe travels!
Ana Quintanilla (8 months ago)
I ended up feeling their uncomfortableness, maybe they need a larger ban.
Westfalia Digital Nomads (8 months ago)
We don't, we simply adapt to what we have. Living full time is a balance between the uncomfortableness and the opportunity to discover the world. We choose a small van because can brings us everywhere.

These guys are as real and as honest as you can get. They are non "instagram filter", non "perfect life" projecting, non gofundme, hard working, awesome people! They do awesome daily sunrise live streams, they make some of the best video footage (especially Aerial footage) that I have seen, in some of the best locations that are often seldom seen. You should check em out.

Wow this is how I want to live stress free
Westfalia Digital Nomads (8 months ago)
Rich, it's not stress-free, but it is (at least for us) much less stressful than before in our static lives. Now we stress about intensive freelance jobs and deadlines, though it's a lot less than when we worked full time. We have expenses. We need some savings for emergencies. I'd never say it's perfect. I'd only say it seems to work well for us. Grin.

Growing Life (8 months ago)
Incredibly refreshing to see another small family who's made van life sustainable, especially when social media is becoming so over-saturated with images that don't portray the full well-rounded reality of this sort of life. Thank you, Danielle and Mat, for always sharing such honest and down-to-earth content.
Westfalia Digital Nomads (8 months ago)
It's always good to have a balanced, not a one-sided pretty picture of a lifestyle. I think they're doing a brilliant job. It's too easy for some to get caught up in the daydream and ignore the realities - you're completely right, Growing Life.

Excellent video editing on this switching up location and drone shots. What a great mix.
Westfalia Digital Nomads (8 months ago)

My wife and I do as long as a week in our mercedes van with three 160 lb english mastiffs. Now that's adventure .
Westfalia Digital Nomads (8 months ago)
Hahahaha. Doggie farts are the worst! Especially the silent but deadlys. Grin. No van is big enough for air. ;)
Burt Hulbert (8 months ago)
Westfalia Digital Nomads first thing you have to know is "low gas/flatulence" dog foods let me tell you.
Westfalia Digital Nomads (8 months ago)
Hahahaha, Burt, that must be quite an adventure with 3! Any tips you can give fellow dog owners? I'm sure they'd love to hear!
Alexis E. (8 months ago)
Wow, six years! It would be so hard to go back to "regular" life after living so freely. I love that you said you work harder because I'm sure that's true with the van, making money and also setup and take down. However, you are really living so it's still so interesting and fun. Happy travels!
Westfalia Digital Nomads (8 months ago)
We still rolling and for now we have no plans to settle down, I suppose will be difficult and we truly enjoy our journey. It's so inspiring for us to be able to travel, see places, understand different cultures, meet locals and get rich in experience.
TheGolfdaily (8 months ago)
Doesn't look easy, - to be perfectly honest..
Westfalia Digital Nomads (8 months ago)
Depending on the week, sometimes we work 50 hours, sometimes less than 5. I wouldn't say it's easier, since we depend on our work reputations for more work - but definitely different, since we have to work for our reputations. If that makes any sense. :)
I_Dont_Eat_My_Friends (8 months ago)
It's a hell of a lot easier than working 40 hours a week.
TheGolfdaily (8 months ago)
Westfalia Digital Nomads I totally understand the spirit. But I can't help thinking that, a tiny little bit more of space will make the experience a lot more richer. Well that's my point of view anyway.
Westfalia Digital Nomads (8 months ago)
TheGolfdaily, it ain't. But the believable and unbelievable moments make it worth it, at least for us. We buy local bread from local people (to steal a phrase, kind of, from League of Gentlemen), get some words and lots of conversations which are priceless. It feels... dunno, meaningful to us being gifted with the experiences.

Westfalia Digital Nomads (8 months ago)
It's not so difficult, but you do have to make some choices. Downsizing to a bag, showering every other day... many people like how it looks in pictures but aren't willing to do the reality. It really depends on the person and what they want. :)
Very cool. 6 years is a long time. I'll go check out their documentry.

Love how they do it for 6 years, because sometimes people just fake vanlife for the sake of youtube/instagram.
RM Barnes (7 months ago)
Look how many container/tiny house/alternative housing videos that are obvious nobody lives in. Almost all made by builders selling them.
Jessica Van Der Boor that's a fact , I thought I was the only one who saw the fakes .

Westfalia Digital Nomads (8 months ago)
Fair enough, John. Big grin. We've never had the whole pancake/waffle thing (more eggs, beans, bacon and bread when we have a big breakie) - but that's what we love about living in a van. Each person decides their own particular heaven. :) Waffles are cool.
John Norris (8 months ago)
A life without waffles would be bewildering...
Westfalia Digital Nomads (8 months ago)
We didn't mention in the interview, but we have 2 solar panels, regulator and inverter in order to keep our electronics charged! For waffles we still buy them in a shop :)

No van life before 2012? What a weird statement. People have been living the van life for as long as there have been vans and vehicles large enough to live in them.
Luke Lambert (7 months ago)
wagon living went down hill after Hitler killed of heaps of the gypsies but due to economics van living is on the rise again
Westfalia Digital Nomads (8 months ago)
of course people live the vanlife from a long time, that's a fact. We meant that back in 2012 wasn't mainstream and popular like these days :)
Exploring Alternatives (8 months ago)
You're right that it's not a new thing, I think they just meant that the Van Life movement was not nearly as mainstream, it also didn't have a name until recently. Thanks for checking out the video :)
