Why I Live in Bangkok Thailand, Top Reasons, Cost of Living, Housing, Transportation, Lifestyle

Thank you for the support! ___________ ***Guys Thank you for the overwhelming response to this video and I can totally understand you may have lots of questions about living out here... Honestly I made this video to just give mainly my friends and family my reasons for living out here as they couldn't understand why I'd leave everything I had in America and they had misconceptions about life out here. I am in no way encouraging others or proposing that life out here is for everyone. My situation was that I had a bit of savings to purchase my condo and was able to support my lifestyle with a part time job with the low cost of living so I could dedicate more time to my passion which is film making and photography. Playing more videogames fell in there somewhere too. Haha. Anyways, These were my reasons I am living out here and possibly some of it may be your reasons for wanting to maybe live out here. However, is that the only lifestyle available out here? No. Are there other kinds of people who live out here and have their own reasons for loving Bangkok? Yes. Do I recommend you make drastic lifestyle changes and move here like I did? No. I was actually on a 1 year unpaid leave when I decided to take a vacation out here so even I still made sure I had a fall back in case I didn't like life out in Asia. If you do think life out here is for you, I recommend you first take a vacation out here and experience for yourself if life out here and what I am saying is true for you. Whatever the case, I hope to cover many of these topics in the vlogs to come, but for now I've tackled two of the main questions I keep getting in the comments to the best of my knowledge, based on my experiences, and my honest opinion which is how to make a living out here, and how to buy a condo. I hope this helps answer some of the questions you may have. https://youtu.be/UupXRetwaGI ___________ ***Your Support Would be Apprecaited on PATREON*** https://www.patreon.com/livetravelasia

Spent two weeks in Bangkok last year. Got back to the States and I was homesick for Bangkok! I'm a white American man, live in the Rocky Mountains, American 100%, but I MUST GO BACK TO THAILAND AND LIVE THERE! After Bangkok, Americans seem so slow and stupid I can hardly take it...

I lived in Bangkok way back in 1972: it was still very much a third world country in many ways back then but it was still a wonderful place that left me with a lifetime of great memories. Great video!
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (4 days ago)
Some would argue it was better back than. I haven’t been here that long but there are times when I even reminisce about how it was 3 years ago because this city changes so fast...

I am moving to Bangkok in 2020 and I have visited Thailand and I really loved it and when someone would ask me why I wanted to move to Bangkok I never had any actual reasons as to why I want to move is was always "just because I want to" and this video just makes me more excited to move
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (18 days ago)
Awww thanks for sharing. I am so glad that the video spoke to you :)
Doug Mo (20 days ago)
Hi , question I have , you can no longer do visa runs , I heard the change the Thai Laws now , am I right ???
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (19 days ago)
You know I haven’t been keeping up to date w that. All I heard is that they stopped issuing multiple entry ones at some of the counties where ppl seemed to be abusing that system. But with any kind of crackdown it’s usually worst at first and they’ll lax it a bit later usually.

LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (20 days ago)
Hope it gives you some answers :)
Jack June (21 days ago)
sorry, I didn't notice that before...I will watch that one next
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (21 days ago)
This isn't something I can explain in a comment. I do have a follow up video on some of these topics but my short answer is that it isn't really that much different than living in any foreign country and the way one supports themselves outside their country isn't much different. We either work or live off our retirement pensions or savings

Nadeem Chaudhry (22 days ago)
Thanks for the awesome info! Just curious - how did you move permanently (and legally) to Thailand w/o being a Thai permanent resident? Isn't 30 days the maximum of length a person can stay??
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (19 days ago)
You’re welcome!
Nadeem Chaudhry (20 days ago)
Thanks for that. Good to know. Appreciate it!
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (22 days ago)
Nadeem Chaudhry I didn’t move permanently... you can come here on a multiple entry visa and stay here 60 days at a time and extend them for 30 additional days. Should be enough time to search for a job and make a sustainable move. Wouldn’t even think about a permanent move until you actually travel out here first and see if the lifestyle is for you

4:27 "... because Thailand produces its own fuel ... " WHAT?? Thailand produces fuel?? im surprised I had to check this in Wiki: "Thailand produces roughly one-third of the oil it consumes." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thailand#Energy "Proved oil reserves are estimated at 0.4 thousand million barrels" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_in_Thailand#Oil
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (24 days ago)
Yup. I was surprised too. I learnt it cause I ran into a foreign engineer once working on those oil rigs. But than it made sense how oil is pretty cheap out here compared to other asian countries. They charge an arm and a leg in Korea

I enjoyed watching this video with your take on Bangkok. There are so many Lifestyle options here in Thailand and the one that you have chosen is quite popular. As for me I certainly enjoy "visiting" Bangkok but prefer a more rural lifestyle. I'll share your video link with some of my friends that are interested in coming here so that they can see a perspective other than my own. Looking forward to your next Thailand video!
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (25 days ago)
Appreciate it. Yes I think the great thing about thailand is that it’s so diverse there is a lifestyle almost for everyone. Glad you found my perspective helpful :)
Earl Ismyname (26 days ago)
What is the average income? It doesn't matter much if you don't make enough in comparison.
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (26 days ago)
For a foreigner the avg income even as a low paying English teacher is well above local average. Generally that’s the case with any Asian country
bubu mic (26 days ago)
The smog is real tho ...
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (26 days ago)
The smog is everywhere and actually bangkok's air pollution is relatively low compared to other major cities
Chris Zealotes (27 days ago)
https://www.straitstimes.com/world/bangkok-issues-air-pollution-warning
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (26 days ago)
Well pollution is seasonal. Winters do get bad but it was the same in LA where I lived however the air was bad throughout the season there and got extremely toxic during forest fire season where ash would literally land on you and your car would be covered in it. And we ignore the warnings there just as we ignore the warnings here cause it's relatively not that bad. It would be misleading to assume the air is bad overall based on isolated incidents air pollution warnings on certain seasons
Chris Zealotes (27 days ago)
USA....lost it on so many levels.
Chris Zealotes (27 days ago)
Air pollution...appalling.
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (27 days ago)
The air in Bangkok was voted amongst the best of major metropolitan areas in the world. That’s a common misconception
Obie (27 days ago)
I would love to visit there looks amazing.
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (27 days ago)
Definitely worth at least a visit!
achillefs sousalis (28 days ago)
Do you live permanently in Bangkok and if that yes can you tell us how you did it please ? Thank you very much for the video by the way !!!
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (28 days ago)
Hmm that’s such a relative word... not sure how to answer that. I initially travelled out here and eventually I bought a condo and than I found a a job. Didn’t plan any of it. Just decisions I made. Something that helped me a lot was the fact that when I was in the states I made sure I didn’t take on any debt by living frugal and I had a bit of savings the buy a condo here. I also live frugal out here as the pay isn’t great but I think the quality of life is better than when I was making 6 figures in the states. Hope this helps. Of course there are many details in my experience but can’t sum it up in a comment. I have bits and pieces on my channel and let me know if there’s a specific aspect of it that you’re interested in the videos :$

Joe Mel (1 month ago)
Could i rent a small Condo, scooter, food and have a girlfriend for under $1,100 US per month? I mostly eat in, cook my own for health reasons. I'm a 55-year-old male and would love to live in Thailand year round. I don't smoke, drink, and not into expensive hobbies.
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (30 days ago)
Well first of all the food carts aren’t really that cheap... the areas they are sweeping are the touristy areas where there is too much traffic congestion. The last place they hit up was khaosan. Before that it was Siam. I thought I’d miss it but knowing Bangkok I’ve found the same products cheaper at the night markets. As far as the vendors on the super local areas where people do rely on them for a cheap way to access food, they seem to still be there as far as I’ve been noticing. Even if they did I imagine they’d come back as usual whenever any kind of crackdown happens. The government is relatively helpless against the demands of the masses compared to the states here from my observation. I’d like to tell u what’s happening w the proposed fines for not driving w a drivers license and pet registrations because of the public complaint but that’s another vlog in itself
Joe Mel (1 month ago)
Thank you. My girlfriend is cool and understanding. By the way, i heard on CBC radio news that in Thailand (city?), the authorities were doing a complete sweep of the Food Carts (which they usually don't pay taxes). Will the Food Carts vendors go back to business as usual after a few weeks or months? (Business as usual, meaning they don't have to pay taxes or very little so in return, customers enjoy a great low price)
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)
Joe Mel well I operate for around that income cause I make about 600 bucks and live in a condo that costs 500 to rent so I’d say it’s possible but I am pretty frugal. My girlfriend also pays for her share. I guess it depends on your girlfriend. Some are high maintenance if you know what I mean haha

Subscribed just for the single reason you are explaining exactly why i want to live there. Went on a YOLO trip to meet a girl in UBON last year, been there 5 times totall since that time. And shit,i want to be there, just need to figure out how as i am not a digital nomad and i dont think my skill set is a required one in Thailand. But yeah you are living it and keep it up. Thailand is alot better and less fucked up then western europe right now.(I think a very few ppl will disagree with me,but fuck them).
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)
Glad you enjoyed it out here. Haven't been to western europe but I hear it's getting harder to live out there. I myself personally just want to visit but not live there haha. And yeah... finding a job is not easy out here. I just settled for a job teaching English and making enough to get by but hope you can find an international company or a decent job out here. Thanks for subscribing :)
I run the international digital nomad society and have always placed Bangkok as one of the top places.

I just wrote a check for $3,450 USD for my rent in Silicon Valley, CA . I almost broke my keyboard listening to your cost of living hahahaha I guess I'll continue to invest in passive income generating things and will then GTFO of the USA to have a better life hehehe. It's always nice when you make dollars and spend other currencies. I just came back from Tokyo and Osaka for 2 weeks and going out every day in Japan was actually cheaper compared to what I would've spent on just groceries staying at home in San Francisco....#Insane
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)

Very insightful video! What audio recorder and lav mic did you use for this video?
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)
Haha yeah thats the one although i don't recommend it cause you can't put a wind cover on it. You'll see in my new upcoming vlog I am using a diff lav mic although I have to admit for 20 bucks the sony one sounds much more crisp but it depends on your preference and you can also EQ it in post. The win noises it picks up from both sides of the lav mic however is a deal breaker in most situations so i had to buy another one
Jacky Li (1 month ago)
Ah, I have a Zoom h1n and was hoping to get a lav mic for it, your sony one looks like its good for capturing your audio with little background noise. This is prob the one you have? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0058MJX4O/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)
Haha thank you! It’s the cheap Sony one that’s stereo and silver. I just plugged it into the a7sii input jack and recorded. The onboard on Sony’s are pretty good cause they got a decent preamp. Wouldn’t try it on canons tho. I did however switched to using a zoom h1 and I am more mobile w it and the sound isolation is super good. The auto level feels better on the Sony camera however....you’ll see it used extensively in my upcoming khaosan video next week. I shot it a similar style as this but the zoom allowed me to do shots that weren’t possible on this one

As far as friends, I have more friends than I need out here lol. Too many obligations with vlogging and work I don't even have time to hang out w them anymore. Idk... the older I get the less I tend to feel I need to socialize. I have an amazing girlfriend who is supportive of me and I have dozens of students I tutor that I have a very close relationship with so that's enough socialization for me. Far more socializing than I did back in the States sadly

LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)
Not sure what the film office is so no? haha
Sunny Yun (1 month ago)
This is not what everyone is wondering.. Most of people want to know only 2 things..What visa and job do you have over there.
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)
Lol why does that matter? Do you think you can do the same job as I do and have the same qualifications?

Is that Vagabond youre reading? nice
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)
You're the first one who's recognized it. My Japanese girlfriend was the one who recommended it to me and I hate her for it cause I am hooked and she never told me this series hasn't ended. It's torture waiting for the end...

if you ok to drive motorbike to travel arround, transportation can be cheap. For me as a local who not using motorbike, transportation in bangkkok very expensive (compare to salary). (Not anymore I moved to Singapore)
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)
Yeah, Motorbikes definitely save money or you have to live right by bts and buy monthly pass
Drmicky141 (1 month ago)
It's a big decision, so do tell people the downside too. Otherwise you're no different from a travel agent really.
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)
Well the title of this video is why I live here but there are other more in depth videos where I talk about topics for hours on end for those interested in moving here. Unfortunately they aren’t as popular as this one

LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)

Jesus.... how many football tops do you own?! You must be spending a small fortune on them... unless they're Bangkok fakes....
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)
Haha I am not enjoying it but it is what it is. Can't win all the time
Seramics (1 month ago)
+LIVE TRAVEL ASIA are you a MU fan? How are you enjoying the state of MU today? Hanging around in 10th place.
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)
Haha it is a small fortune... I buy at least one Man U Jersey a year but sometimes it’s the training ones that cost 30 bucks or so. But yeah if I see a top on clearance for like 20 bucks and I think it looks cool, I have to buy it. It’s the American hoarder in me haha
Love it + I have family in Bangkok. If you want to do the Carlton Dance, I made a lesson on it a few months back coincidentally https://youtu.be/ejB4SPdhpYM ;)

AAA NO REAL MEX FOOD LIKE BACK HERE IN SAN FRANCISCO O WELL
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)
The Mexican food selection is sparse at best and expensive. That's also what I miss the most but they are catching on. Taco bell is supposedly opening up a some stores next year so at least it'll hold me up until I can go back to SoCal on a visit

Good point! DId you consider any other SE Asian countries (ie, Vietnam, Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, etc.)?
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)
Yeah but none of them ticked all the boxes like Bangkok

Good video. I live in Chiang Mai as a retiree. I also have a small apt. and scooter. Basically downsizing. My net monthly is only about $1500 a month but I can pretty much do what I want. Airfare within Thailand is so cheap too. Next week I will go to BKK for a weekend trip. airfare about $170 returnd for 2 people. Glad you enjoy it..
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)
Wow thats a really good fare

Small single bedroom like yours cost more than $1,000 per month rent like here in my city San Francisco.

+LIVE TRAVEL ASIA I believe it. There are hi-so everywhere.
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)
Geez it’s gotten that bad in sf huh..... well to be fair there are some places like in the prime locations even in Bangkok where it costs close to that as well haha
Villhelm Cranford (1 month ago)
My answer would be. Can I get a job there not speaking the language?
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)
Well I'd love to help you out but I can't guarantee anything. Got my hands full trying to take care of myself and peoples expectations are all relative. But I've seen plenty of people who come here for a fresh start and do well for various reasons although so if you're a responsible guy, I am sure no matter where you are, you'll do great. Wish you the best
Villhelm Cranford (1 month ago)
Or perhaps you could do me a solid. From a guy that needs a fresh start.

nice vid how bout kuala lumpur malaysia?
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)
Honestly I haven't personally been there but it seems nice enough. Only thing is I've seen way too many malaysians who come here on a monthly basis and tell me Malaysia is boring so I've been reluctant to go but I am sure I'll like it if I did go
Erik Andersen (1 month ago)
If you ever come to Chiang Mai and haven't been before, let me know and I will show you around :)
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)
We went there about 2 yrs ago but did the touristy stuff since it was our first time. When we go again I’ll definitely take you up on that offer
Michael Claudiu (1 month ago)

Great vlog. Great, Question? Why are Asians flooding into the USA? Why are Thais Flooding into the US?
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)
Lol you named the two countries where the people are better off financially than your avg American, particularly the Japanese... it’s the opposite. You have Americans trying to go to japan and China to earn a decent income. And most Asians go to America not for the money but to get their kids an American education cause that American degree will have them making a lot more money when they return back home. For you to immigrate to America, you have to be better off than the American as the legs costs are ridiculously high for one to be a legal alien
Daddy (1 month ago)
Rich americans think good life in bangkok with way cheaper costs is hella great. Asians from low income countries like china and japan want more money in rich countries like America. Duh
LIVE TRAVEL ASIA (1 month ago)
Also the same reason Americans are flooding into Thailand. Personal preference
