What is Cuba Like? - A Trip to Havana in 7 Minutes or Less

4839 ratings | 512283 views
This video is my attempt to document Cuba before the inevitable takeover of American Corporations... and to have a little fun :D Check out my website for more travel tips! https://golocaltips.com Or follow me on instagram! @calmckinley btw if anyone was wondering it is technically still illegal to travel to Cuba as an American citizen so to get there we had to book a flight to Mexico, get a Cuban visa in Mexico City airport, then catch a flight to Havana. Songs (in order): 1. "A Real Hero" by College Feat. Electric Youth 2. "Amor Verdadero" by Afro Cuban All Stars 3. "Changes" by Faul, Wad Ad & Pnau "Life is a journey, not a destination" - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Cuba was in deep poverty when they had a dictator called Batista who was friends with and traded with America. A doctor called Che Guevara travelled around Cuba and saw all the poverty and decided the country could do better. They became friends with Fidel Castro and decided to start a socialist revolution. They freed the country from rich Americans who saw the country as there playground for prostitution and gambling. They gave free healthcare to all and built a amazing country from dirt. Che Guevara was assassinated by the Americans when trying to free another country and now American schools call them communist dictators.

Cal, great video! To make that trip with your grandfather was extra special, I’m certain. I did a bicycle tour from Havana to Cienfuegos in April 2018 and nothing looked different. Like you, I love Cuba 🇨🇺!

Love this video.  Your evaluation of Cuba and its people is spot on.  Several years ago I did a cruise around Cuba which stops at about 5 different cities and enjoyed it very much.  I find that I have great respect for Cubans, despite knowing very little about them.  I want to return and see more of this great place and I am hoping it will not become "americanized."

The problems in Cuba are the same as the problems in Eastern Europe. It's not because of the US embargo, it's because of the thieving hypocritical Left fascist thugs who have been running Cuba for over half a century. Everyone in Cuba knows it, including the communists.

Went to Cuba first in 1981, to Veradero, America cottages still on the beaches. Then it was a true Communist country. Now Cuba is a military dictatorship. Generals own a big piece of resorts and tourist based businesses. Farmers are doing well selling their surplus for CUC. CUC are the hard currency. People are very friendly, but be careful of scams and hookers.

Most authentic place you have ever been to? Sounds like you need to get out and do some travelling. Try going to any place in Mexico our South or Central America outside of the big cities. You might find some authentic people - albeit poor - there also.

What is Cuba like? Well simple - an expensive mistake. The food is dire, the drink is dire. The scenery is quite nice, but the same as any other Caribbean island i.e. Dominican Republic, St Lucia. The beaches are gorgeous but riddled with sand flies, the sea is beautiful. Hygiene is sorely lacking especially in the hotels where flies walk up and down the food. Oh and unless you like history and stories, it is a waste of time. A place you go to say you were there. For the same money I could have got a far, far better experience in Mexico. That's a mistake that'll not happen again.

I'm a Canadian who visited Cuba back in 1980 and 1981 when the place was overrun with Russian tourists. The old stereotype of the American tourist has nothing on the arrogance I saw with the Russians -- they were probably Soviet commissars who were permitted to travel to Cuba. The Cubans just tolerated the Russians - - they loved Canadians. Cuba was relatively prosperous with the Soviet financial support then. Under a strict regime, it was a safe place for tourists. Believe it or not you didn't encounter many uniformed police or military except at the airport. Their "secret police" was mainly trusted Cuban citizens who blended in with everyday workers. Best part was that tipping was illegal -- it was permissible to pass along little gifts like pens or postcards as a show of appreciation for service. I've heard that things changed after the collapse of the Soviet Union and Cuba became impoverished. One last thing -- the aged Havana Club rum was the best rum I ever tasted.

Now, Im amased at how easy people could be deceived. So m I wrong or I hear this guy saying that Cuba stopped in time because of the U S embargo ?? That they been unable to have what was needed to keep the buildings in shape, and that they been paintless and crumbling down do to the american embargo ?? I bet that is not happening on the touristic sites. Come on guys, how long would you accept these lies ?? That people in power is a bad and an evil prople, delinquents, killers, torturers. They blame the US, but things are not the way they say. Its been almost 60 years in witch they been getting money from everywhere and turning themselves into millionaries, money from Russia, Italy, Spain, lately from Venezuela, lots of oil to "resale", taking what belong to cubans and giving to other countries, pretending to be a good system, one able to share with the most needed, but the cubans from within are living in a shameful, precarious, and under human condition, it is a general thing, excluding those in power. In almost 60 years of slavery, they been stealing all the monetary help from outside, not taking care of the Island (cause they dont care) to blame it on the embargo, while they sale russian weapons all over South America, to form guerrillas, to create subversions, using the money given to them to buy cocaine from colombian cartels and then introduce it in the United States, collecting of course. That is the behavior of delinquents of the lowest rank.(take a look at General Ochoa trial, that was a time when they got almost cought trafiking, and they killed him with no remorse, blaming him for the drug traffiking, portraying an innocent Fidel, ignorant of what was happening around him and his revolution, who would believe that ?? Only the blinds refusing to see, he was always in control of everything, nothing will move without His concent) All you guys are doing, whoever you may be, is playing their games, and believe or not, you are and been used, that's what they do with people, they use them. Take a look at videos from Fidel's son, spending money right and left, where did that money came from, where did he learned to spend like that when all his father did all His life, was indoctrinating and teaching the cuban people to become content and satisfied with the restrictions in food that he would put on them in a montly basis (and not every month) Fidel wanted the cubans to be ready to sacrifices their lives if nescesary for his ideals. He would encourage them to give out of their missery to other countries so he can portrays himself, as the leader of a country willing and able to help others(good "comunists") while he was living like the millionaire that he was, and as the capitalist that he always condemned in public, but that is, and been all along, a political game, and the whole world continues to play with their rules. Remember that the U S is a neigbour, and when you live next to a person for so long, you get to know this person really well. Im not saying that cuban people is not a good people, but there is all kinds of people everywhere. They will respect the tourist, because it is a goverment's business, and you dont play with that goverment, you miss with them, and they will pack you with years in prison, if not kill you. But to believe that there is no one in Cuba capable, willing, and ready to take what is yours by any means nescesary, is to be naive, specially when there is so much need and cubans with so much inventive sense and ingeniosity, do to the lack and absence of resourses.

A communist hell. Don't believe the propaganda. Most political prisoners, suicides, exiled refugees, political executions, abortion and alcoholism PER CAPITA than any other country in the world . Not because of any embargo but because of a bloody dictatorship.. there's no internet, no computers, only one official government press, no freedom of speech, no free elections, a ration card, no right to private property ..or businesses..etc etc..these YOUTUBERS really need to better educate yourselves before embarking on these documentaries. How about talking to a victim of that dictatorship or someone who escaped? Cubans just like north koreans ..are very afraid to speak their minds.. remember this is a military dictatorship with a very repressive security apparatus.

I'm glad you have fun. I agree with you in the sense that everyone should visit Cuba but there's so much misinformation in this video. You think Havana is in bad shape because of the embargo. 🤔 Did you go to Miramar or other parts of the city where foreigners or rich nationals live? Did you get to party with the rich kids there? They are just like spoiled rich brats everywhere else in the world. Also you didn't live and work there like Cubans do. It's very rich to be so opinionated about fidel, communism and the embargo when you didn't grew up in Cuba.

id love to go to Cuba.. to be honest.. Cuba is better with out us. They are perfect just the way they are. Their culture, food, music, cars, clothing, colors, decor is Cuba without anyone. I wish these ppl the best.

I hope you live there or the rest of your life to realize you're wrong. Everything in the world has the right to progress. Progress doesn't mean taking away the culture. Just look at Japan.

Cuban people, yeah they’re great. Cuban situation tho, not at all, change is needed, nobody deserves that. The situation need improve, that doesn’t mean we have to change our culture etc. Because, coming from a Cuban, living there, and then going anywhere else, makes you want to cry realizing how bad your situation really is, and how delayed your country is

I don't see why the US sanctions should make the country so far behind. What they need are basic items which can be imported from China, Mexico, etc. They need to earn more foreign exchange using the beautiful country to develop tourist industry to the best since Cuba already has beautiful beaches and the best latino music and dance. It is a heaven for tourists to spend their vacations there. Go Cubans make the best of what you have.
LeToucanHasArrived (6 months ago)
Dont visit Cuba everyone that tries to talk to you will try to scam you in anyway possible, everything is crazy expensive. They have two currency's one for local people with their prices then the tourist money that is over priced, they say its 1:1 with the euro and the dollar. There is no information about public transportation, a cab to Havana from the airport will cost 120€ if you don't find someone else like we did for 10€. They say that there's no bus that goes to the city when it does once an hour. But you won't find any information on when it comes or anything. Cuba is just a money grab, the houses in vinales is their own mafia so do not eat there because you will be able to find restaurants that cost a lot less. At night in Havana be careful because you might get chased by hookers or people will try to mug you if you are alone!
