I don't do photography and I don't understand... why are the resulting photos colorized even when it don't look like the color gels are affecting the light color?
Elaine Torres (9 months ago)
Because I'm not using constant lights.

Elaine Torres (1 year ago)
Gracias por ver el video! :)

A great little video with everything explained really well. I noticed you don’t flag gels to constrain them, is this a purposeful style choice or, like me, you’re not the world’s biggest fan of barn doors which is the usual flagging choice? A definite subscription.
Elaine Torres (1 year ago)
It will depend on the concept. Since I wanted the color to spread and reach the background I didn't use any grids or barn doors. But yes, if I want to concentrate the light, I will definitively use grids or barn doors. Thanks for watching!

bloo jkl45 (1 year ago)
How is it possible that you can't see any color when she's taking the pictures? but there's so much pigmentation and color in the actual pictures?
Elaine Torres (1 year ago)
bloo jkl45 The gels on the strobes are coloring the background. You can't see it in the video because these are flash lights, not constant. You will only see the effect in the picture.

Guillermo Kyosuke (1 year ago)
So is it necessary to use at least two sheets on the lights to get that strong color in teh photo? I try using one and the colors dont really pop like they are doing on yours? If so, i will try tomorrow.
Elaine Torres (1 year ago)
It's not necessary and it doesn't work with every color. Try using a deeper shade of the color you're using.

Nice video Elaine. I am looking at setting up a studio at home in my spare room. Needs painting first mind, lol. I was thinking about the interfit ex150 set of strobe lights. Do you know anything about them and if you can use gels with them? Can you recommend any strobe lights around £100 -£200. By the way my site if your interested as always keen on comments is www.jonathanleonardphotography.co.uk
Elaine Torres (1 year ago)
You can definitively use gels with those. Here's a list of good affordable brands https://www.dpmag.com/buyers-guide-2016/affordable-monolight-strobes/

I'm about to rent some lighting gear and I was wondering what kind I should rent. I don't know a whole lot about lighting gear yet. What can I rent that's similar to what you're using? How many flash triggers do I need?
Elaine Torres (1 year ago)
Where are you looking to rent? You can rent a couple of mono strobes. They come in different brands, some less expensive than others, it all depends what brands the renting place carries. Make sure to also rent a stand and modifiers compatible with the strobes.

Hi Elaine, great video!! ... Does it work with a blue gel as well? Your using a white paper background right? I read on some websites that grey is better... but do you think I can do a blue gel on a white background?
Elaine Torres (1 year ago)
Hi, thanks for watching! To what particular case are you referring to? If it's to give color to the backdrop, you can use any color you like, just make sure the gel color is strong. I always use white if I need to apply color with a gel. The color will look vibrant and strong. I don't think darker backdrops will work for that particular case since the color won't show as good as with light color. If you're using the gels for the other examples, then yes, grey works as well.

LensFace (1 year ago)
Does this technique also work for filming videos? Or would you need different types of lights?
Brent Hearn (1 year ago)
LensFace "Cinematography Database- Arri light workshop" on YouTube is what your looking for. Elaine's tutorial is a great start even for continuous lighting
LensFace (1 year ago)
For sure, I'll definitely try out these techniques in a upcoming video project. Thank you!
Elaine Torres (1 year ago)
You will definitively need constant/ continuous lights for videos, not strobes. But you can totally use gels with these as well and you can apply the same techniques.
Louies_Magic (1 year ago)
Hi Elaine, I was wondering where you purchased your gels from? I've been looking for some for my Alien Bees.
Omgdannie2 (1 year ago)
What was the brand of the gels?
Elaine Torres (1 year ago)
Hi! I purchase my gels at Sammy's Camera in Los Angeles, but you can buy a pack of gels at Paul C Buff, Adorama, Amazon, Ebay, BH, etc. They are pretty easy to find. The alien bees comes with gel clips included, so any type of gel will work. You can also use small clamps to attach the gels to the reflector bowls.

Elaine Torres (1 year ago)

steve kent (2 years ago)
New to this but are all of these lights strobe lights you are using? Are the continuous?
Elaine Torres (2 years ago)
Hi Steve, yes, these are strobe lights (flash lights), these are not constant. They do have a "modeling lamp" that its constant for you to see how the lighting could look, but it's not strong enough to use this way. Hope this helps! if you have more questions you can send them to [email protected]
