I'm glad he has left a lot of these older videos up so you can see his progression. It's not just him up here talking away, he actually practices what he talks about. Fast forward a little less that 10 years and this dude is killing it.

Alpha, In other videos (particularly your newer ones), you wear slightly shorter suits -- by about 1 inch or so. Is that intentional? Have I missed a video updating the deviation from this rule? Most people nowadays say the suit should fall to about the upper thumb knuckle (shorter), and that falling to the bottom of the thumb is too far. In fact, if you Google the question, it's very tough to find a guide that advises on bottom-of-the-thumb length. Myself, I think men nowadays want something shorter because of James Bond & other celebrities: Thin, sleek, modern look. But... take a look at many of the more classy politicians, or a commanding (but fit) business person, and you'll see a more commanding, timeless look (classic length as mentioned in this video). I can't find much reading, guides, or info on this really.

As a style consultant you might consider losing the earrings as it detracts from the air of sophistication you're trying to convey.

similar age
Walter Sickinger (2 years ago)
How old are you? My style icons are Michael Caine in "Afie" and "The Italian Job",Sean Connery in "Goldfinger" and Cary Grant in "North by Northwest" so you can guess my age. I still have my suits made by a 74 year old Italian tailor who began his apprenticeship at age 14. My suits fit.
jeffsor47 (2 years ago)
Hair style is fine, just the earrings gotta go.
Walter Sickinger (2 years ago)
Perhaps also a new hair style. Not everybody wants to look like a 20 something man-child.

One of my arms is longer too and I have freakishly long arms. They always tell me I need a long but then I would have to pay a fortune tailoring the body of the suit like you said. Good advice
Dwayne Lowe (3 years ago)
What if the local dry cleaning / alterations customize company that are supposed to be pros. In your area ? Size you by using safety pins . And you think to yourself is this right ? Is this how you size for your jacket to fit ? and they get it wrong... way the hell wrong. And you had 4 other jackets brought to them for customized work. All cut too short then what ? $157.30 later. What the hell do I do now. They're saying that it's my fault, I told them I wanted the jackets this way... also ends of the sleeves looked like they had been on a roller-coaster ride . And threads sticking out everywhere. You just had to see this mess. What a horrible first time experience with getting my jackets or anything hemmed cust. Fit whatever you call it . They were great jackets too. Help me out here what can I do ?
UrbanDanger ! (2 years ago)
Dwayne Lowe sue them.

Are Zara sportscoat/blazer worth getting?
Rich Luna (5 months ago)
Maybe for a temporary jacket. Maybe if you need something quick. Maybe if you have a whole bunch of better quality jackets. Never if you’re serious.
UrbanDanger ! (2 years ago)
calvin0416ny no they aren't. Generally way too tight. Artificial materials (you should aim for purely natural materials). Stay away at all costs.

Did you break your arm as a kid? That could effect how long one grew.

Nathan Cannon (5 years ago)
How do you get a variety in sport jackets cause only way I can think of is change in undershirts
TheSololobo (5 years ago)
Blazers length that fit in the crease of your fingers look a bit long and outdated imo. Alot of italian men nowadays have their jackets shortened by about an inch and as usual they look great.
Rich Luna (2 years ago)
TheSololobo Good point! I never really thought about that. Jacket lengths are getting a little shorter these days and I think it's becoming more fashion-forward such as Aaron always recommends.

he has a good video on shaving.
MikeysFitness (5 years ago)
That's a very rude to say. It's none of your business to tell him he needs to shave. Men are suppose to have beards, it's what makes us look manly.

This guy needs a shave.

And I haven't taken off the tag yet. Should I go back and return it? Or should i just get it re-tailored?

Hey Aaron, Thank you so much for this video! I just bought a jacket and thanks to this video i find out that it's a little bit wide around my waist area. So where can i get it fixed? Head to a nearby tailor or dry cleaner?

lololol doofus
DannX4484 (5 years ago)
Aaron I think your blazer till mid-fingers length rule is outdated. I went to check a new suit I got after watching this and found the ends were about two inches below the sleeves (very short according to your rule as it reaches my thumb knuckle). But then I checked the latest suits that are being worn by athletic figures and found the same correspondence

Jabez Ledres (6 years ago)
great video! do you have any tips for quickly finding a fit for the shoulders?
angrysquirrel11 (6 years ago)
Another awesome video from you on proper jacket selection. I bought a suit from Georges Clothing in Manchester NH. Brought it back twice to have it tailored and it's still a total mess. Nowhere near the criteria you just demonstrated. Now that I watched your video I know what to look for. Thanks!
Michael Reimer (6 years ago)
You forgot the shoulders. The most important thing. And regarding the length if you want to look taller, use a shorter coat... So the hand-way to figure it out isnt working anymore. Go for your pants and see that it barely covers your bum.
69pointdexter (6 years ago)
excellent video thanks ready for a suit for a weeding

I bought a blazer about a month ago and it fitted me perfectly but it feels like it has strected out very much since I bought it... I tried this trick when I was at the store where I bought the blazer and even asked one of the workers there if it fitted and she told me it fitted me perfect and warned me about people buying to big blazers. But when I do that trick you show me in the video now it's clearly too big around the waist! Is there anyway to shrink back the blazer?
LA MAISON GAGA (6 years ago)
Your jokes and laughters are adorable :D
VPX4 (6 years ago)
so i just bought an grey express suit coat on sale for 90 dollars, and i was wondering if i could some how get away with using it as a blazer. The deal seemed too good to pass up, but im hearing that its probably not the most stylish thing to do.
PhilippoChannel (6 years ago)
Heres my problem, I have broad shoulders.. I try on a 42, looks fantastic, I don't have to tailor it. But i feel toooo restricted at the shoulders... like if im standing around.. fine.. but if I reach for something up high or down low.. or drive my car.. I feel like my arms and shoulders are pulling. So i go for the 44, but it looks baggy at the waste, so I have to tailor it. It clearly neads tailoring so what size am I really?
UrbanDanger ! (2 years ago)
PhilippoChannel Low Armholes is your problem
NickSolo420 (6 years ago)
When I reach forward as in a pushing or grabbing motion, I get tightness around my upper bicep by my shoulders. Is that normal?
Banktackle (6 years ago)
Can I get my tailor to alter my regular suit into a short?
Imdroppingdimes (6 years ago)
Take your jacket to a tailor. You can usually lengthen your jacket sleeves a bit (I've seen some that can be lengthen nearly two inches.) If you are wearing a dress shirt underneath, you should be showing around 1/4 to 1/2 an inch of shirt sleeve.
Blindjohn (6 years ago)
You need to a video for guys who have long arms but a short torso, size regular jackets are too short.
crash60068 (6 years ago)
Thanks so much for this.

Hi Aaron, Thanks for the videos. Very informative. Been thinking to buy a sport coat - my first!. Can you tell me what is the best coat to match with jeans and shirt on the inside - dont like the formal look. Am asking in terms of the type of cloth (cotton, wool, corduroy, etc) Some coats are double-lined and also with pads on the shoulders. Is it good to match these with jeans too? How about color or design? Would like a coat that's all-year round. Whats your suggestion regarding this?
Mike Liberty (8 years ago)
@relax12002 Go to your nearest menswear and ask if they carry cruise-wear, January and February is cruise time in most reputable men's shops
Mike Liberty (8 years ago)
@notube2007 It just means you need to have the Taylor do a passover on the garment , ,its completely normal , I'd venture to say that unless your having a made to measure suit made you will need a passover 90% of the time , there is one suit /sport coat body that is a bit better , when you go shopping ask the sales person if they have the Tex body , it as got a bit of give under the arms and chest and and that helps the neck and shoulder line..
Mike Liberty (8 years ago)
In fact its very common to have one harm longer then the other , 75% of men have a difference in arm length , and also a hip slightly lower on one side , so when you have your bottom done you should ask that they measure both legs at all times. I'm a bit surprised he would not know this fact , so his credibility is at risk ,lol.
Mike Liberty (8 years ago)
@JustifyJustin lol, there not fake , there just sowed, some are double stitched so you must use a razor blade or a stitch cuter and open does pockets , don't worry there really are pockets in there .
hubertandclyde (8 years ago)
@notube2007 Did your parents have any children that weren't retarded and that knew a n article of clothing that bunches up is obviously too fucking big.
notube2007 (8 years ago)
@hubertandclyde The question was not to you but this one is. Did your parents have any children that lived?
hubertandclyde (8 years ago)
@notube2007 that is too big you fucking moron.

I needed this video about 25 years ago....lol great video

Personally I get the 42 slim and party on.
notube2007 (8 years ago)
So, what does it mean if it bunches in the back?
Christopher Dickson (8 years ago)
great tips mate thanks going on a cruise and it would be nice to know i am dressed correctly
alpha m. (8 years ago)
@jfknightom Try a 39S or even a 38S. When I get officially measured in a store, I am a 43S, but the 39S works the best. Also, look for athletic cut. This should help and cut down on the alterations.
alpha m. (8 years ago)
@JustifyJustin The pockets are just stitched closed. All you do is cut the stitch and pull out the string and you are ready
JustifyJustin (8 years ago)
Hey Aaron, I like the idea you have regarding the pocket square - problem is, most suite jackets seem to have a 'fake' pocket these days. Any idea how to overcome this?
alpha m. (9 years ago)
go check out my video on sport coats and blazers, it will explain the differences
alpha m. (9 years ago)
Yes! Separates are generally made to be worn as a suite or by themselves. But the one thing you need to know is that if you wear the jacket a few times and want to take it to the dry cleaners, make sure you are bringing th pants at the same time. If you over clean one of the items, they won't match for long. Color and wear will become different.
PortSeanTV (9 years ago)
This should be required learning in high school classes. Thank you so much for sharing. I am telling all my boys about your youtube channel.
LPNumber9 (9 years ago)
Thanks Aaron - that was helpful. QUESTION: Generally, can suit pants/jackets be worn as separates?
