A lot of people in the comments so far are only speaking about the males and derating the art of method acting. Brie Larson stayed in a room isolation herself as a way to ensure she understood her role. To say that is a waste would be foolish, she took a chance and now an actress for the upcoming role of Captain Marvel. Her acting was Amazing in the movie the Room. Please understand that it was no easy step and that is she and method acting is praised so much. This also does not discredit other types of acting as well. They all are great and when used properly can give you lots of respect.
Can you recommend books on acting methods (pragmatic, whit exercises), please? Thanks in advance.

I believe interview statements should be avoided in depth essays such as these. Many people quote interview statements as stone etched opinions, but you've to understand that during interviews people generally cant say what they actually think because of lack of time, nervousness and whatnot. Especially Bale, he is generally quite nervous in interviews as he's not a very social celeb type fellow

I don’t think she understands the fact that these are highly intelligent, and more importantly, sociopaths. I’m one myself. We literally have the ability to block everything out, be charming, or be a different person. If you know not of which you speak, hold your tongue.

You did end up flipping the other side of the coin... But, isn't it suppose to be okay to recognize someone for what they have went through to achieve something... I mean we've always been rewarding the final results by default.
SmeltzerSounds (2 months ago)
Would you agree that the performance is what matters most at the end of everything? Lots of people don't care HOW you get there, save a certain few (such as myself). Here I am trying to study to become a better actor, and this video does have good points. Personally, all I care about is getting better without doing irreversible damage to me and my health. And if method is a way to improve, I need to learn it.
Trishul Yumnam (6 months ago)
AlltimeMovies anyways... I was searching for the term and the video was good enough to make me understand it thnx
AlltimeMovies (6 months ago)
I agree, I think the only issue that arises, is if another performance is better than the one that was 'method' acted, but the method actor takes home prizes just because of what they went through. It's a great topic for debate though!
TheTriptamineDream (7 months ago)
Ok, I have a small nit-pick - because I don't know that Hollywood loves it I would ask "why do 15% of Hollywood actors LOVE method acting?" Many people working on set aren't exactly enthused with it, even though sometimes it works really well and creates amazing results.
Nguyen Phuc (7 months ago)
To me, the best method acting comes from Christian Bale's role as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho

Publicist Method.Began in the 80s as studio publicity departments focussed on the usually physical hardships endured by the lead. in order to create interest.Younger actors took this as a signifier of commitment, and here we are.Acting as a branch of WeightWatchers.

I think the overblown mystical mythology of method acting is most exemplified by Heath Ledger's performance in The Dark Knight. In that: it is a complete and total myth that Ledger was a method actor. By all accounts Ledger was cheery and gracious on set, rode his skateboard to work, and spent time in-between takes showing the cast and crew pictures of his daughter. A documentary was produced that some of his family participated in, and did so specifically to quash the notion that Ledger was "killed by the joker." Ledger's approach to playing the character sounds much more akin to Brie Larson's work on "Room" than Leto's work as the "same" character

I wouldn't dare say anything against Daniel Day-Lewis, he is extreme, but whatever he's doing - it's working. But for almost everyone else these days, it's just a pathetic attempt at trying to exempt oneself from criticism. It can't be bad acting - he stayed in character for X months, lost Y pounds and did Z unnecessary stunts! Just like RLM say about Boyhood - but it took 12 years to film! And what do you have to show for it? That's the key question.
SHELLBACKS CLUB 🐢 (9 months ago)
is method acting even acting? they truly believe that they're the actual person they're portraying. its a form of psychosis, not acting.

"Because it implies... anything less is feminine and inferior" Or maybe it's just not masculine? Just because something isn't manly doesn't mean its seen as objectively inferior. This is flawed feminist logic.
William King (9 months ago)
That value judgement is made strictly in regards to MALES and not all people; it's not a universal standard applied to both sexes. Being feminine for a man automatically means they are "less than manly" and thus less than ideal. However, both men and women strive towards different ideals. Males base their identity and self-esteem on how they rank and compare to OTHER MALES (in the eyes of females and other males) while females (who they couldn't possibly compete with) to other females. Most males desire to be alpha males.
Hal Incandenza (9 months ago)
There is value judgement implied in the word "sissy" but as other commenters have pointed out she should have provided more evidence of this sexist perspective in method acting.

Great video. Really makes you think about how hard some actors work and not phone it in
tetepeb (9 months ago)
I few actors do this good like Daniel Day Lewis and Robert De Niro then you have the posers like Jared Leto who thinks it will make his performance great on it´s own and this you can see anywhere in the world = people who know why they do something and people who see others do something and mimics it with bad results.
tetepeb (9 months ago)
No but i have seen alot of movies with JARED Leto, David´s more famous brother ;) But seriosly other then Dallas Buyer Club i can´t recall another movie where his performance was really great. (Not even Chapter 27 or Reqium for a Dream) He´s been in alot of great movies that i like alot but he´s never been anything special i don´t see a character i only se Jared Leto. But don´t get me wrong he doesn´t ruin the movies he´s in for me but he doesn´t really and anything for me either.

you've seen other movies than suicide squad with david leto in it right?

I have to be honest and say that you lost me at the end with your conflation of physical commitment to a character with masculinity. Did you seriously draw that supposition from one Christian Bale quote? That's pretty weak. There are a myriad of ways to critique the method but that's not a good one. The fact that it produces archetypal characters and overindulgent performances is a better avenue of criticism.
TheTriptamineDream (7 months ago)
I bet there is something there. I am not sure what it is. Maybe Hollywood is more indulgent of men actors over women?
AlltimeMovies (9 months ago)
No problem! There's definitely another video in the whole gaining/losing weight saga! I'd say though for Christian Bale in The Machinist, it's SO extreme - far more than Theron - Bale is putting hos body through physical stress by being so underweight, whereas Theron essentially became a standard sized woman? I totally agree on the emphasis on women's beauty as well - perhaps the double standard means that women can't put themselves through something like Brody's Pianist preparation because it might risk their future careers? What do you reckon?
YouthInEyesAsian (9 months ago)
I think I would say Theron's weight gain (and makeup) for Monster was very brave and extreme for an A-List starlet who's often called one of the sexiest women alive. But I don't think anyone would call it "masculine." The same goes for Linda Hamilton's physical shape when filming T2: Judgement day, both stellar performances btw. I think male attractiveness not being as valued as it's counter-part in Hollywood has more of an effect on the personal decisions of actors and actresses rather than personal sacrifice for a role being a "masculine" thing. Thanks for the reply!
AlltimeMovies (9 months ago)
Hiya, thanks for the feedback! It wasn't just that Christian Bale quote but I think it summed it up fairly nicely - especially considering he's often mentioned in terms of going extreme with his roles. When I was researching this one, I found so many examples of actors going to extreme physical commitment but hardly any of actresses doing the same - the only things I could find would be extreme preparation (like Portman for Black Swan etc). I think there's definitely an element of suffering for your art as well involved in it, so maybe that's more significant? But I'd definitely agree with your point about how it can create overindulgent performances!

thats a wonderful stance and i hope other actors dont harm themselves with this whole method thing. it makes you wonder as if there may be a possible mental or psychological issue involved with method. in truth i hope i gave a helpful comment and if you wouldnt mind a bit of input, i wouldnt mind if you took more foot selfies <3

Refreshing look at (male) "method acting". Reminds me of what Laurence Olivier told Dustin Hoffman on the set of "Marathon Man" (Hoffman had gone full "method", losing weight, running for ages before shoots). A bemused Olivier said to him "Why don't you just try acting"...
every actor has a method. Some actors claim to have the only real method, but that's bullshit
Whatever (9 months ago)
In the video, Alex talks about method acting as a male phenomenon. Guess it does not have to be male, but in the context of this video and her line of thought it seems to be...
Luciana Bs. (9 months ago)
I love that quote
This Guy (9 months ago)
why does it have to be male?
Nathan McGowran (9 months ago)
The only thing 'Method Acting' is good for is press, marketing and attention. In his later years, Stanislavsky completely abandoned the idea of using internal emotions to convey a character in favour of a more physical approach. The job as an actor is to be able to perform a scene, even one that is heavily emotional, and still be able to chat, make jokes, go home, and get on with your life afterwards. Using your own emotions or drastically changing your physical appearance or characteristics is incredibly unhealthy, and one acting role is not worth your life, no matter how passionate you are about it.

Ironically one of the most acclaimed method actors, Brando, used this outlook for his acting. I always thought certain people resented Brando for getting it perfect so seemingly effortlessly.

S Paul Guitars Absolutely remember Christian Bale's rant on the sets of terminator salvation.
S Paul Guitars (9 months ago)
Notice how all these actors who give themselves over to this method have serious emotional and physiological problems. They are continually exercising out bursts of anger, violent behavior and can no longer discern between right and wrong. They seem to be tormented in their personal lives and their views on life are continually contradictions and hypocrisy. They have traded sanity for insanity. All of this for a Oscar. Their behavior can best be described as demonic.
AlltimeMovies (9 months ago)
I think there's a huge element of the 'suffering for your art' trope as well that's wrapped into this - but absolutely, films will always benefit if an actor/actress has pushed themselves to the extreme for a role!
Ishan Jaiswal (9 months ago)
If your passion is driving you to self destruction then it is time to reconsider your priorities.

Christian Bale is a cunt though. And they cut a lot out of Suicide Squad, Jared Leto thought he was going to have a bigger role, but he was shadowed by a bunch of bad actors.
