Went to china with my vid cam, recorded the underground station, then a stranger smashed my vid cam. I wonder what would the chinese do if i take their pics like Donald did to the french lady 😂

I enjoyed learning from the well planned and executed explanation of camera lenses and trick photography. Written in a conversational tone. Short and sweet tour of the terminology and techniques of contemporary Digital SLR camera lenses: "glass". The best part is the very helpful graphics that make it easy to understand basic lens concepts and secret photography. https://plus.google.com/b/116518508242424166405/116518508242424166405/posts/CTxZ6XB76kx

LadyLongIsland (3 years ago)
What great tips. I do a lot of what you say in the video. I'm not the least bit shy, so I have no problem just going up to people. I get some fun stuff that way. I recently did a video at a place called Corey Beach. Unbeknownst to me when I arrived there was a wedding going on and a young couple with a puppy. Well, I got some great video and photos. It's a small family beach on the South Shore of Long Island, but it's fun and interesting and I got some great stuff, just by being friendly!!! Luv your videos. Thanks for all the tips.

This really makes me wish I had spent more than half a day in Howth this summer! We went for the cliff walk (beautiful as well as great exercise), but sadly didn't have a lot of time to explore the village. Also, this is a really original series, great work Donal! :D
Donal Skehan (3 years ago)
+Virginia Smekens so glad you like the video and so cool you've been to Howth - you have to come back :)
Megan McGrath (3 years ago)
Hey Donal, beautifully produced video, excellent and inspiring, this is gonna get me out shooting again for the first time in years ;) I just want to ask--from a photojournalism standpoint, what's your opinion on the ethics of photographing people without explicit consent? You more or less advocate it here--"Most of the time they won't even know you're there"--and there's a lot to be said artistically for boldly going for a good shot and just getting it, but ethically I'm actually a little uncomfortable with that statement. What's your personal stance on getting permission? When and how much do you let that slide? I've occasionally recorded people in various ways before asking permission--either photographically or on audio for radio productions--and gotten some pretty negative reactions, so now I'm more cautious. Thanks!
Fransisco Samara (3 years ago)
I'm no expert at photography, but I think you should pay attention more to the intersections between grid line on your viewfinder. it looks even cooler when the object isn't located at the center, but at one of those intersections. Cheers and looking forward for your next cookings!

Jessica Hill (3 years ago)
Great tips, photography is one of those things that just needs time and practice, experimenting with different lights and settings on your camera can transform your photos! Don't expect to be a pro overnight, have fun with it and as Donal just said, don't be afraid to get the shot !
Lunathewolf06 (3 years ago)

Debi (3 years ago)
These tips are very helpful, I'm too afraid to take a picture of people's activity. That's probably why my photos don't feel quite alive. I guess I just have to be bolder. Thanks Donal!

So helpful. Great tips. Thanks Donal. Lee :)
any tips to stop shaky hands?😧 esp using a hand phone to shoot😬
Yuchen Cai (3 years ago)
+bloopbloopstarshine i guess you have the problem when shooting under low light. turn on HDR and turn up the ISO setting, if your phone has it. it might compromise the quality of the photo a little bit. Or you can buy a little tripods for your phone if you don't mind carrying it around.

The window tip at restaurants is a great one, I find myself doing that all the time now. It gives that extra oomph to the shot and lessens the dark shadows you sometimes get overtaking the photograph. Loving this series so far! :)
Katerine (3 years ago)
thanks a looot!!! will wait until your next tips))) I have never known before about choosing place close to a window))) that`s cool!
Nina Grkovic (3 years ago)
I don't do food photography other than posting my own dishes on Instagram, but I found this very useful in general, not necessarily food photography. Thanks! Also, I really like the homely feel of this video, with the wife cooking in the background!

KnightsGambit (3 years ago)
Did you really learn photography by yourself? You should upload a video with your pictures, and tell the story just using the pictures, and using location pictures to show where you are. What do you do with your pictures? Do you just keep them? You must have folders and folders of all kinds of pictures. I love this series, it's like a behind the scenes :D
KnightsGambit (3 years ago)
+Donal Skehan Wow, your photography is really amazing, and it's surprising how good it is since you learnt by yourself :)
Donal Skehan (3 years ago)
+KnightsGambit yeah there's a lot of harddrives and folders with photos :) I did learn on my own!
